NYPL celebrates expanded library site

They’re building for books.

Residents of the Van Cortlandt Village area of the Bronx are closer to getting a much-improved neighborhood library.

New York Public Library (NYPL) and elected officials gathered on Monday to celebrate the construction of a new, larger Van Cortlandt branch at 3882 Cannon Place.

The 5,800-square-foot, two-story new branch, expected to open in summer 2019, will be more than twice the size of the current branch, located around the corner on Sedgwick Avenue.

Van Cortlandt Library Manager Peter Pamphile said the current branch is so small — in a one-floor building, and basically just one big room — that it is difficult to host special programming such as children’s storytelling, educational assistance and financial literacy courses.

“We do everything in the middle of the floor while people might be doing research or using the computer,” he said. “Having a separate community room in the new branch is going to be so vital.”

In addition to a community room, the new branch will feature dedicated areas for children and teens, an adult reading room, additional computers and laptops, and an outdoor courtyard area.

“We’ll be able to have a separate space for each age group — we’ll have an adult floor, a children’s floor, and a separate teen room,” Pamphile said. “Now when we have story time, we don’t have to worry about someone saying, ‘Hey, can you guys quiet down,’ since we’ll be on a separate floor,” Pamphile said.

NYPL President Tony Marx said he witnessed the limitations of the previous branch during stopovers there.

“I remember the first couple of visits. [I remember] seeing the education programs that we’re so proud of, and that was plunked in the middle of the library, since they didn’t have a separate space,” said Marx.

He said that NYPL is conducting more than $600 million worth of capital projects across its system, including several projects in the Bronx. In addition to the new Van Cortlandt branch, NYPL has expanded the Woodlawn Heights Library and conducted full renovations at the Hunts Point and Melrose branches.

“We’re getting a new library here, but in other places in our district, they’re being renovated, they’re being improved, and that’s really important for our community,” said State Assemblymember Jeffrey Dinowitz.

“Here in the Bronx, we appreciate the fact that [NYPL has] looked at our branches, reimagined our branches, come to us with a plan to make sure that in every single corner of our borough, we can do better as it relates to our public library branches and our public library system,” added Borough President Rubén Díaz Jr.

“We know that in the Bronx, more and more, not only children, but families are using the libraries,” he said.

The new Van Cortlandt branch is being constructed inside a long-vacant building initially created for residential use. Construction will cost $8 million, with Dinowitz, Díaz, City Councilmember Andrew Cohen and State Senator Jeff Klein allocating $500,000 each in capital funding and NYPL contributing the rest.

“It is clear that the Van Cortlandt community loves its library, and we are so proud to give this growing community the branch that it has long wanted,” said Marx.

A gut renovation will be conducted in the building’s interior to create the library facilities.

The site of the new library branch has endured a controversial history, as the city halted a construction project there in 2006 after determining that the previous owner was attempting to build housing on the site that exceeded zoning regulations. Three years later, after the developer erected the two-story building that currently occupies the site, the project was abandoned in the wake of community concerns over its potential use as a halfway house.

The property was purchased by NYPL in 2017.

While officials staged a ceremonial “groundbreaking” to celebrate the new branch, Dinowitz said the fact that only interior renovations need to be done to the building means the new branch will be opened faster.

“The only thing better than a groundbreaking is a ribbon cutting and we’re going to get there more quickly than most,” he remarked.

“While this library project is a 21st century structural upgrade on the surface, at its core this project is also a major investment towards the enrichment of the 21st century minds of our community,” said Cohen.

Los residentes de la zona de Van Cortlandt Village del Bronx están más cerca de obtener una biblioteca de vecindario muy mejorada.

La Biblioteca Pública de Nueva York (NYPL, por sus siglas en inglés) y los funcionarios electos se reunieron el lunes para celebrar la construcción de una nueva sucursal de Van Cortlandt en el No. 3882 Cannon Place.

La nueva sucursal de 5,800 pies cuadrados, de dos pisos, que se abrirá en el verano de 2019, será más del doble del tamaño de la sucursal actual, ubicada a la vuelta de la esquina en la avenida Sedgwick.

El gerente de la biblioteca de Van Cortlandt, Peter Pamphile, dijo que la sucursal actual es muy pequeña, en un edificio de una sola planta y, básicamente, solo en una sala grande, que es difícil organizar programas especiales como cuentos infantiles, asistencia educativa y cursos de educación financiera.

“Hacemos todo en el medio del piso, mientras que las personas pueden estar investigando o usando la computadora”, dijo. “Tener una sala comunitaria separada en la nueva sucursal va a ser tan vital”.

Además de una sala comunitaria, la nueva sucursal contará con áreas dedicadas para niños y adolescentes, una sala de lectura para adultos, computadoras y laptops adicionales, y un área de patio al aire libre.

“Podremos tener un espacio separado para cada grupo de edad, tendremos un piso para adultos, un piso para niños y una habitación para adolescentes por separado”, dijo Pamphile. “Ahora, cuando tenemos tiempo para contar historias, no tenemos que preocuparnos por que alguien diga, ‘hey, pueden callarse’, ya que estaremos en otro piso”, dijo Pamphile.

Tony Marx, presidente de la NYPL, dijo que presenció las limitaciones de la sucursal anterior durante las paradas ahí.

“Recuerdo el primer par de visitas, al ver los programas educativos de los que estamos muy orgullosos, y que se tiraron en el centro de la biblioteca, ya que no tenían un espacio separado”, dijo Marx.

La nueva sucursal Van Cortlandt se está construyendo dentro de un edificio vacío creado inicialmente para uso residencial. El sitio de la nueva sucursal de la biblioteca ha tenido una historia controvertida, ya que la ciudad detuvo un proyecto de construcción allí en 2006 después de determinar que el propietario anterior intentaba construir viviendas en el sitio que excedían las regulaciones de zonificación. Tres años más tarde, después de que el desarrollador erigiera el edificio de dos pisos que actualmente ocupa el sitio, el proyecto se abandonó a raíz de las preocupaciones de la comunidad sobre su posible uso como hogar de transición.

La propiedad fue comprada por la NYPL en 2017.

Mientras los funcionarios organizaron una ceremonia de “inauguración” para celebrar la nueva sucursal, Dinowitz dijo que el hecho de que solo se deben hacer renovaciones interiores en el edificio significa que la nueva sucursal se abrirá más rápido.

“Lo único mejor que un innovador es cortar la cinta y vamos a llegar más rápido que la mayoría”, remarcó.

“Si bien este proyecto de biblioteca es una actualización estructural del siglo XXI en la superficie, en su núcleo, este proyecto también es una inversión importante para el enriquecimiento de las mentes de nuestra comunidad en el siglo XXI”, dijo Cohen.
