I Love the Bronx: Wall of Giants

FX graffiti artist Alfredo Oyague, also known as “Per One,” is a longtime resident of the Bronx. Most of the colorful murals around the Soundview area, on and near Westchester Avenue, are his artwork, or his collaborative efforts with other artists.
He has been painting for nearly four decades.
Last year, he secured a wall on Morrison and Westchester Avenues.
Oyague brainstormed and decided to include prominent members of the Soundview neighborhood, including KRS One, Afrika Bambaataa and Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor.
He gathered fellow world-known professional muralists to create the one-of-a-kind piece; all artists donated their time and efforts. To commission this kind of work typically costs a pretty penny, but Oyague and his peers wanted to give back to the community.
Community Board 9 assisted on securing a grant from the Bronx-Manhattan North Association of Realtors (BMNAR) to help offset the cost of paint.
On July 15, artists from FX and Tats Cru worked on priming the wall, and in just two days, they completed the mural.
It includes items indicative of life in Soundview, including the 6 train by the Whitlock station, an open hydrant, a disc jockey, hip hop, a child playing hopscotch, multicultural flags representing members of the community, and a piragua cart.
This past Sun., Aug.16th, a special unveiling was coordinated by William Rivera, the current District Manager of Community Board 9. The artists, Per One, Ces, Crash, Bio, Nicer, BG183, Pretty Tone and Agoch were awarded several certificates by Congressman José Serrano, Assemblymen Marcos Crespo and Luis Sepulveda, and from Community Board 9.
They were also treated to words from special guest Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor.
She reminisced of the days she walked on Morrison Avenue, and expressed her gratitude. She took a moment to individually greet and thank the artists, and stayed for photos.
Oyague expressed, “It was never our intention to receive any awards, and never did we think that Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor would be present. I’m happy our work is being appreciated and admired. We really just wanted to give back to the community.”
On Thursday, the artists will be having lunch with Afrika Bambaataa. Bambaataa is responsible for coordinating Zulu Nation meetings at the Bronx River Houses, within walking distance of the location of the mural. Alfredo Oyague, artista FX del grafiti también conocido como “Per One”, es un antiguo residente del Bronx. La mayoría de los coloridos murales alrededor la zona de Soundview, en y cerca de la avenida Westchester, son obras de arte suyas o esfuerzos de colaboración con otros artistas.

Oyague hizo una lluvia de ideas y decidió incluir a miembros destacados del barrio de Soundview, incluyendo a KRS One, Afrika Bambaataa y la juez de la Corte de Justicia, Sonia Sotomayor.

Incluye elementos indicativos de la vida en Soundview, como el tren 6 por la estación Whitlock, un hidrante abierto, un disc jockey, hip hop, un niño jugando rayuela, banderas multiculturales que representan a los miembros de la comunidad y un carrito de piragua.
El domingo 16 de agosto fue coordinada una presentación especial por William Rivera, actual gerente de distrito de la Junta Comunitaria 9. Los artistas Per One, Ces, Crash, Bio, Nicer, BG183, Pretty Tone y Agoch fueron premiados con varios certificados por el congresista José Serrano, los asambleístas Marcos Crespo y Luis Sepúlveda, y la Junta Comunitaria 9.
También recibieron las palabras de la invitada especial, la juez de la Suprema Corte de Justicia, Sonia Sotomayor.
Ella recordó los días en los que caminaba sobre la avenida Morrison y expresó su gratitud. Se tomó un momento para saludar de forma individual y agradecer a los artistas, y se quedó para las fotos.
Oyague expresó: “Nunca fue nuestra intención recibir ningún premio y nunca pensamos que la juez de la Corte de Justicia, Sonia Sotomayor, estaría presente. Estoy feliz de que nuestro trabajo esté siendo apreciado y admirado. Realmente sólo queríamos retribuir a la comunidad”.
El jueves, los artistas estarán almorzando con Afrika Bambaataa, quien es responsable de coordinar las reuniones Nación Zulu en Bronx River Houses, a poca distancia de la ubicación del mural. El nuevo arte es una maravillosa adición al barrio. Venga a comprobarlo usted mismo.
