I Love the Bronx – See it all

Many associate our borough chiefly with Yankee Stadium, the Bronx Zoo and the Botanical Garden. While each one is an amazing sites, and we are proud to have them in our borough, there is so much more to see and do.
If you haven’t yet made the time to explore the Bronx, here are a few places to visit before summer ends.
We are the borough with the largest city park (Pelham Bay Park); a maritime town (City Island); the city’s only fresh water river (the Bronx River); and some of the finest Art Deco and Art Moderne buildings in the country (all along the Grand Concourse).
A few ideas follow here.
Take a day to visit the Orchard Beach. Created in the 1930’s, the beach, over a mile long, is located by the Long Island Sound in Pelham Bay Park. There are picnic areas, playgrounds, and basketball, volleyball and handball courts. In Section 9, there are salsa concerts and in Sections 4 and 5, there is a live salsa dj and a designated dance area. For all you nature lovers, make your way to Section 1, walk along the rocky shoreline, and follow the trail through Twin Island. If you are daring, follow the longer, marked trails through Hunter Island.
If the beach is not for you, Pelham Bay Park offers vast areas of nature trails, bike and pedestrian lanes, the historic Bartow-Pell Mansion Museum, Split Rock Golf Course, Turtle Cove Golf Center (for mini golf lovers), the Bronx Equestrian Center, playgrounds, tennis courts and much more.
City Island offers some of the best seafood restaurants, including the Sea Shore, Black Whale, Lobster House, Sammy’s Fish Box, and Tony’s Pier. There are other culinary options such as Don Coquí, Ohana Japanese Hibachi and Artie’s of City Island. For ice cream, make sure to stop at Lickety-Split.
If you visit on the weekend, take a moment to visit the City Island Nautical Museum at 190 Fordham Street.
It doesn’t end there.
Every Saturday and Sunday through Labor Day weekend, between 1 – 6 p.m., the nonprofit organization Rocking the Boat offers free community paddling on the Bronx River. Its representatives launch from Hunts Point Riverside Park on Lafayette Avenue and Edgewater Road. No reservations are required, though those under 18 must have a parent or guardian present to sign waiver.
On August 15 and 26, at 10 a.m., the Bronx River Alliance is offering free community paddling at Concrete Plant Park. The park is located on Edgewater Road between Westchester Avenue and the Bruckner Expressway; there are entrances at both points. No registration is required, though those under 18 must have a parent or guardian present to sign waiver.
The borough’s grand boulevard, the Grand Concourse, is home to some architectural gems. Start at the Art Deco-styled Bronx County Courthouse on 161st Street and the Concourse. Continue north on the Concourse. The Fish building, at 1050 Grand Concourse, is another amazing structure. The entrance is adorned with a colorful aquatic mosaic, making it quite noticeable. The lobby includes red, gold and green terrazzo floors, wood paneled walls, murals and stained glass windows. To get the best view, take a trip this Sunday from 12 – 4 p.m. for the last Boogie on the Boulevard.
Everyone knows you can find the best foods in Little Italy. There, you will be able to pore through the finest selection of sausages, breads, cheeses, pastas, cured meats, pastries and espresso offerings. There are some Zagat-rated restaurants, including Zero Otto Nove, Roberto, and Tra di Noi. Drop by the Arthur Avenue Retail Market. Play the public piano; watch live cigar rollers; check out the Bronx Beer Hall; and stop at Mike’s Deli. All of this is available under one roof.
These are only a handful of the many explorations you can undertake in our tremendous borough. Go out and discover the Bronx for yourself, and be sure to share your story with others.
