I Love the Bronx – Hot at Hostos

As part of our ongoing BFP series highlighting the various favorite spaces, things and people in our borough, we turn to Nilka Martell, who continues to explore her hometown.
“I am a Bronx native, daughter, sister, mother of three beautiful Bronx babies, photographer, writer and motivator,” says Martell, of Puerto Rican descent.
A paralegal for over 17 years until December 2010, she has since been dedicating her time to exploring the Bronx.
Her energy and enthusiasm are indefatigable, and admirable.
“I want to make my fellow residents aware and informed of how lovely our borough is, what it offers, and how to lend a helping hand in our environment.”
Of this new time in her life, Martell says, “I have never felt so alive.”
As I was looking through my calendar for next month’s upcoming events, I noticed many of the ones I am looking forward to are being held at Hostos Community College.

On Fri., Mar, 6th, the Bronx Volunteer Coalition will be hosting its first Volunteer Fair. Dozens of organizations will be on hand offering a range of volunteer opportunities in our borough. The fair will also include workshops and a panel discussion around needs specific to the Bronx, and ways to get involved. It will be held at Hostos’ Savoy Conference Room at 500 Grand Concourse. The following day, on Sat., Mar. 7th, Momma’s Hip Hop Kitchen will host its 8th Volume, “Enough is Enough,” at Hostos’ main theater at 450 Grand Concourse. Bronx-based artist Nene Ali will be hosting. This year’s theme is “End the Violence against Women.” Join in to be empowered through stories, dance, songs and hip hop. The event runs from 2 p.m. – 5 p.m. and features artists such as Lah Tere (one of the creators of Momma’s Hip Hop Kitchen), Likwuid, Mahina Movement, the Mama Wize, Colored Girls hustle and many, many more. On Sat., Mar. 21st the NYC Parks GreenThumb will host its 31st Annual Grow Together Conference. The full day summit includes 45 workshops and a guest speaker. It is a family-friendly event, and some workshops are even geared toward children. My family and I have spent several years attending the conference, and every year my children learned something new to bring back to our block beautification project. There is a small admission fee, but it includes breakfast, lunch and a t-shirt. To register, please visit www.greenthumbnyc.org.
On Tues., Mar. 24th, the Bronx River Alliance will be hosting its Annual Assembly highlighting last year’s accomplishments and getting ready for a new year of work in and around the River. The event will run from 6:30 p.m. – 8 p.m. at the Longwood Art Gallery at 450 Grand Concourse. It is free to the public, but you must register as space is limited. Learn about the city’s only freshwater river, celebrate its successes and see what the goals are for its future. Lastly, Hostos is offering a free workshop series entitled “The History of Latin Music and Latin Jazz IV”. The classes are hosted by the legendary Joe Conzo Sr., producer, music historian and author of Mambo Diablo, My Journey with Tito Puente. The Saturday series will run every Saturday through April 8, from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. Admission is free, but you must reserve your spot by calling 718.518.6656.
Though it’ll be a few weeks before we experience spring, keep yourself busy and warm with any if not all of these events.

Como parte de nuestra serie regular de BFP que destaca los espacios favoritos, las cosas y las personas de nuestro condado, nos dirigimos con Nilka Martell, quien continúa explorando su pueblo natal.
“Soy una nativa del Bronx, hija, hermana, madre de tres hermosos bebés del Bronx, fotógrafa, escritora y motivadora”, dice Martell, de ascendencia puertorriqueña.
Asistente legal durante más de 17 años, hasta diciembre de 2010, desde entonces ha dedicado su tiempo a explorar el Bronx. Su energía y entusiasmo son infatigables y admirables.
“Quiero que mis compañeros residentes sean conscientes y estén informados de qué tan hermoso es nuestro condado, lo que ofrece y cómo ayudar a nuestro medio ambiente”.
De esta nueva etapa de su vida, Martell dice: “Nunca me había sentido tan viva”.
Mientras miraba en mi calendario los eventos del próximo mes, noté que muchos de los que estoy esperando se están celebrando en el Colegio Comunal Hostos.

El viernes 6 de marzo, la Coalición de Voluntarios del Bronx organizará su primera Feria de voluntarios. Docenas de organizaciones estarán presentes ofreciendo una gama de oportunidades de voluntariado en nuestro vecindario. El sábado 21 de marzo, Parques NYC GreenThumb celebrará su 31a Conferencia Anual Crecer Juntos. La cumbre de un día completo incluye 45 talleres y un orador invitado. Es un evento familiar y algunos talleres están incluso dirigidos a los niños. Mi familia y yo hemos asistido varios años a la conferencia y mis hijos siempre aprendieron algo nuevo para llevar a nuestro proyecto de embellecimiento de la cuadra. El martes 24 de marzo, la Alianza del Río Bronx celebrará su asamblea anual, destacando los logros del año pasado y preparándose para un nuevo año de trabajo en y alrededor del río.
