On the dean’s list

It’s party time at Lehman College.
The Bronx’s senior public university is throwing down on April 24th with The Dean’s Award, a star-studded gala.
The Dean’s Award honors artists celebrating the Bronx with music, dance and theatrical performances.
This year, honorees include author Esmeralda Santiago, Pregones Theater and composers Michael Bacon and John Corigliano.
Charles Hale, co-founder of Artists without Walls, will host the event.
Deirdre Pettipiece, Dean of Lehman’s School of Arts and Humanities, said the honorees have all had major influences both the Lehman and greater Bronx communities.
Santiago, author of When I was Puerto Rican and several other books, is a frequent lecturer at the college. “She is always willing to come and talk to students,” said the Dean. “She never says no.”
Santiago speaks to a lot of issues that people in the Bronx face. “The vast majority of Lehman students are of Hispanic heritage,” Pettipiece said. “Her values resonate with our community.”
Bacon and Corigliano, both award-winning composers, also teach at Lehman.
Corigliano has won four Grammys, an Oscar, a Pulitzer and a Grawemeyer Award. In addition to three symphonies and eight concerti, he is one of the few contemporary composers commissioned by the Metropolitan Opera for a new work, The Ghosts of Versailles.
“He teaches classes here with a real generosity of spirit and kindness and professionalism,” said Pettipiece.
Composer Michael Bacon is not only a professor; he’s also an alumnus who studied under Corigliano. He’s composed award-winning music for TV, feature and documentary films. He and his brother Kevin also perform together as The Bacon Brothers.
The Pregones Theater performs part of an upcoming musical about the civil rights movement and the bus boycott.
“It should be a real show-stopping number,” Pettipiece said.
The evening’s proceeds go directly to student programs such as the Best of the Bronx. The series was the result of a master class where students learned to shoot, edit and interview with help from film industry professionals.
The resulting one-minute video vignettes featured a wide range of Bronx locations—including Wave Hill, City Island, the South Bronx, Arthur Avenue and Woodlawn Cemetery. It did a lot for Bronx tourism, said Pettipiece.
“The pieces turned out so beautifully that they were featured all over the country,” she said. The videos are often shown on Taxi-TV, NYC Life and other local TV stations.
In addition to shaping the future of the city’s arts and culture, Lehman is one of the borough’s biggest employers.
“We contribute a lot the community,” said Pettipiece. “If you don’t know Lehman—you don’t know the Bronx.”

El Premio del Decano honra a los artistas que celebran el Bronx con música, danza y representaciones teatrales.

Deirdre Pettipiece, decano de la Facultad de Artes y Humanidades de Lehman, dijo que todos los homenajeados han tenido una gran influencia tanto en Lehman y en las comunidades del Bronx.
Santiago, autora de When I was Puerto Rican y varios otros libros, es una oradora frecuente en el colegio. “Ella siempre está dispuesta a venir a hablar con los estudiantes”, dijo el decano. “Ella nunca dice que no.”

La recaudación de la noche va directamente a los programas de los estudiantes, como el Best of the Bronx. La serie fue el resultado de una clase magistral donde los estudiantes aprendieron a disparar, editar y entrevista con la ayuda de profesionales de la industria cinematográfica.
