Shifting Sands
The Hostos Center for Bronx Nonprofits (CBNP) is hosting “Shifting Sands: New Dynamics in the Bronx Art Scene” on June 18, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Old Bronx Courthouse building on Brook Avenue.
Part of the CBNP’s “Public Conversation Series,” this event is being sponsored by the organization No Longer Empty, which engages the public with contemporary art through curated, community-responsive exhibitions and education programs that revive underutilized properties.
The goal is to spark fresh perspectives on creating, presenting and experiencing art in The Bronx.
The CBNP’s Public Conversation Series features quarterly field-building discussions on emerging paradigms in public policy and non-profit practice. The series seeks to highlight the innovations of Bronx practitioners and the grant making of New York-area funders—their successes as well as disappointments—as they grapple with new challenges in communities and test pioneering approaches to longstanding public policy issues.
“The Bronx has long been associated with the arts,” CBNP Executive Director Eileen Newman said. “Helping to support the people and organizations that keep this tradition alive and well is crucial to keep the borough growing strong.”
Moderated by Sarah Calderon, from the Casita Maria Center for Arts and Education, featured panelists include Arthur Aviles from the Arthur Aviles Typical Theater (AATT); artist Alicia Grullón; cultural activist Bill Aguado; Carey Clark from The Point; artist and educator Dennis RedMoon Darkeem; Eddie Torres from the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs; and Michael Kamber from the Bronx Documentary Center.
“No Longer Empty has been following these issues from neighborhood to neighborhood in New York City. We welcome creating a space for constructive dialogue that elucidates how different communities find their solutions to address a changing environment,” said Naomi Hersson-Ringskog, Executive Director of No Longer Empty.

El Centro Hostos de asociaciones sin fines de lucro del Bronx (CBNP) está organizando “Shifting Sands: Nuevas dinámicas en la escena artística del Bronx” el 18 de junio, de 11:30 am a 1 pm en el viejo edificio del tribunal del Bronx en la Avenida Brook.
Como parte de las ” Series de Conversación Pública” de CBNP, este evento es patrocinado por la organización No Longer Empty (Vacío, no más), la cual involucra al público con el arte contemporáneo a través de exposiciones vinculadas con la comunidad y programas de educación que reviven propiedades subutilizadas.
El objetivo es despertar nuevas perspectivas sobre cómo crear, presentar y experimentar el arte en el Bronx.
Las Series de Conversación Pública del CBNP incluyen discusiones trimestrales acerca de los paradigmas emergentes en las políticas públicas y en la práctica de las organizaciones sin fines de lucro. La serie pretende poner en relieve las innovaciones de los profesionales del Bronx y la concesión de subvenciones de los financiadores del área de Nueva York –tanto sus éxitos como sus decepciones-ya que lidian con nuevos desafíos en las comunidades y ponen a prueba enfoques pioneros en cuestiones de política pública de larga data.
