Seeking opportunity and employment

While many have spent the last few weeks in earnest preparation for a holiday feast, for others, this season of preparation has also included searching out employment opportunities.
With the borough’s unemployment rate recently rated as highest in the state at 12.5%, many residents of the Bronx have continued to pound the pavement for work.
This past Fri., Nov. 16th, New York State Assemblymember Nelson L. Castro and New York State Senator Gustavo Rivera jointly hosted their Second Annual Fall Job Fair at St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church in Tremont.
Hundreds lined up just outside the imposing church, seeking an opportunity to make an impression – and land a paycheck.
“It’s very tough out here, and very competitive,” said Chris Figuron with evident frustration. “In preparation for this event, I updated my resume. I hope I’m one of the lucky ones. There are a lot of people and not enough jobs.”
Over 20 different employers, ranging in industry from maintenance companies medical centers, participated. Among them were FreshDirect; Children’s Village; St. Barnabas Hospital; Montefiore Medical Center; and the Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA). Over 500 job seekers were interviewed for approximately 200 positions.
“We want to hire as many Bronxites as possible, so Senator Rivera’s and Assemblymember Castro’s efforts to put small businesses like FreshDirect in touch with Bronx residents who are looking for work is a terrific opportunity for everyone involved,” said FreshDirect co-founder and CEO Jason Ackerman in a statement.
The concerns expressed by residents like Figuron were echoed also by the elected officials who had organized the event.
“Out of the five boroughs effected by the recent economic crisis, the Bronx has been the borough that has suffered the most,” said Senator Rivera. “We are lacking jobs, [and] our community is suffering greatly. There are some areas in my district that have 13 percent unemployment rates.”
Senator Rivera argued that the job fair offered an effective way to bring as many prospective employers and employees together at once.
“This event is a great opportunity to bring employees and employers face to face,” he noted.
Others shared Senator Rivera’s tempered optimism.
“I haven’t seen job fairs in our communities recently. This job fair and the fact that companies are offering jobs is a sign at least that the economy is moving forward,” said Peter Garcia, who had also taken his place in line. “Even if it’s not by much, at least we are moving forward, not backwards.”
And beyond employment, there were opportunities at the fair for advancement.
Others at the fair included ASA College and Bronx Community College, among others, who sought to present information on technical courses and skills-building courses.
“People need training for the new job market especially in IT [Information Technology],” explained Jeffery Hatton, Director of Outreach and Recruitment of Per Scholas. “The IT industry is filled with opportunities, but you need the right skills. Our organization understands that, and we are trying to provide [them].”
Per Scholas is a non-for-profit organization that offers a free 15-week IT preparation course in computer reparation for qualified applicants. The course includes free tuition and free career counseling.
According to Per Scholas representatives, 80 percent of their graduates ultimately land a job in the IT market.
Assemblymember Castro lauded the efforts of those seeking out workforce development with additional training.
“A lot of people here are getting opportunities that they didn’t have before,” said Assemblymember Castro. “Opportunities that will help them be better prepared for the job market. I was given reports that some of the people who have applied for jobs here have been cited for second interviews. That is very satisfying.”

Mientras que muchos han pasado las pasadas semanas en anticipada preparación para el día festivo, para otros, esta temporada de preparación también ha incluido la búsqueda de oportunidades de empleo.
Con el promedio de desempleo en el condado recientemente tasado como el más alto en el estado con un 12.5%, muchos residentes del Bronx han continuado buscando empleo.
Este pasado viernes, 16 de noviembre, el asambleísta Nelson L. Castro y el senador Gustavo Rivera auspiciaron su Segunda Feria Anual de Empleo en la Iglesia Católica Joseph’s Roman en Tremont.
Cientos se alinearon en las afueras de la iglesia en la Avenida Bathgate, buscando la oportunidad de hacer una impresión – y ganarse un salario.
“Aquí es bien fuerte y bien competitivo”, dijo Chris Figuron con evidente frustración. “En preparación para este evento, puse al día mi resume. Espero ser uno de los afortunados. Hay muchas personas aquí y no hay suficientes empleos”.
Más de 20 diferentes empleadores participaron. Entre ellos estaban FreshDirect; Children’s Village; Hospital St. Barnabas; Centro Médico Montefiore y la Autoridad Metropolitana de Transito (MTA por sus siglas en inglés). Más de 500 personas buscando empleo fueron entrevistadas para aproximadamente 200 posiciones.
“Deseamos emplear a los más que podamos aquí en el Bronx, así es que los esfuerzos del senador Rivera y el asambleísta Castro de poner negocios como FreshDirect en contacto con los residentes del Bronx que están buscando empleo es una excelente oportunidad para todos los envueltos”, dijo el cofundador de FreshDirect y CEO Jason Ackerman en un comunicado.
Las preocupaciones expresadas por residentes como Figuron también fueron eco de los oficiales electos que organizaron el evento.
“De los cinco condados afectados por la reciente crisis económica, el Bronx ha sido el condado que más a sufrido”, dijo el senador Rivera. “Nos faltan empleos y nuestra comunidad está sufriendo grandemente. Hay algunas áreas en mi distrito que tienen tasas de desempleo de un 13%.
El senador Rivera sostuvo que la feria de empleos ofrecía una efectiva manera de unir diferentes empleadores y empleados juntos en un mismo lugar.”
“Este evento es una gran oportunidad para traer empleados y empleadores cara a cara”, señaló.
Otros compartieron el templado optimismo del senador Rivera.
“Yo no he visto ferias de empleos en nuestras comunidades recientemente. Esta feria de empleo y el hecho de que las compañías están ofreciendo empleo es una señal de que por lo menos la economía esta echando para adelante”, dijo Peter García, quien también había tomado su puesto en la línea. “Aunque no sea mucho, por lo menos vamos hacia adelante no hacia tras.”
Y más allá del empleo, había oportunidades en la feria para avance.
Otros en la feria incluían a ASA College y el Bronx Community College, entre otros, que buscaban enseñar información de cursos técnicos y cursos para construir destrezas. La gente necesita entrenamiento para el nuevo mercado de empleos especialmente en Tecnología Informática (IT)”, explicó Jeffery Hatton, director de alcance y reclutamiento de Per Scholas. “La industria IT está llena de oportunidades, pero necesitas las destrezas correctas. Nuestra organización entiende eso, y estamos tratando de proveerlo”.
Per Scholas es una organización sin fines de lucro que ofrece una preparación gratuita en IT de 15 semanas en reparación de computadoras para los solicitantes cualificados. El curso incluye recibir un empleo en el mercado IT.
Según representantes de Per Scholas, el 80 por ciento de sus graduados consiguen un empleo en el mercado IT.
El Asambleísta Castro elogio los esfuerzos de aquellos buscando desarrollo laboral con entrenamiento adicional.
“Muchas personas aquí están recibiendo oportunidades que no tenían antes”, dijo el asambleísta Castro. “Oportunidades que los ayudarán a estar mejor preparados para el mercado de empleos. Me han dado reportes de que algunas personas que han aplicado para empleos aquí han sido citados para una segunda entrevista. Eso es bien satisfactorio”.
