I Love the Bronx: Block Party Time

As part of our ongoing BFP series highlighting the various favorite spaces, things and people in our borough, we turn to Nilka Martell, who continues to explore her hometown.
“I am a Bronx native, daughter, sister, mother of three beautiful Bronx babies, photographer, writer and motivator,” says Martell, of Puerto Rican descent.
A paralegal for over 17 years until December 2010, she has since been dedicating her time to exploring the Bronx.
Her energy and enthusiasm are indefatigable, and admirable.
“I want to make my fellow residents aware and informed of how lovely our borough is, what it offers, and how to lend a helping hand in our environment.”
Of this new time in her life, Martell says, “I have never felt so alive.”
There were so many wonderful and free community activities hosted in our borough last week that it made it hard to choose one.
The Bronx River Alliance held its Annual River Day Festival at Shoelace Park; Bronxmama and Acuator, Inc. hosted the “Bronx Awesome 2014 Father’s Day” event; the Urban Park Rangers had free canoeing at Indian Lake at Crotona Park; Tanya Fields of the BLK Project opened her urban farm and Lily Kesselman coordinated the first South Bronx Farmers Market.
Did I mention it was a busy time?
Moveover, this month has been full of personal milestones for my youngest daughter, including a prom, her 18th birthday, a school award ceremony and even graduation – all a week apart.
As this was her birthday weekend, I allowed her to pick which event she would wish to attend after her high school award ceremony, where more than 100 Bronx students were recognized for academic achievement.
True to her Bronx roots, she chose a block party – a very special one.
We made our way to Lincoln Avenue and 135th Street for the South Bronx Ignites Mott Haven Block Party.
The event was coordinated by SoBro, in partnership with Dancing in the Streets, Universal Hip Hop Museum and The Mott Haven Merchants.
It is always nice to enjoy a day in the Bronx with a mix of new and familiar faces.
The musical entertainment and dance performances included hip hop b-boys and b-girls, bomba and hip hop artists. There was plenty of music, a live dj, and a hip hop show emceed by Ralph McDaniels.
The line-up included legends Melle Mel, Grandmaster Caz and Kurtis Blow and there were guest appearances by Ice-T, Afrika Bambaataa and Grand Wizard Theodore.
Later, we met with friends who granted us access to the stage area. Classics were rhymed by the hip hop legends and the crowd, which included fans of all ages, generated energy that grew by the minute.
We even caught Kurtis Blow break dancing, and plenty of the officers from the 40th Precinct were bopping their heads to the music.
My daughter stopped at Jamie Jones’ The Shoppe, Bx table and selected the “Old School” design on a crop top.
She also had her own milestone moment, as she registered to vote at the table of Assembly candidate Angel Molina.
Special visitors included Bronx Borough President Rubén Díaz, Jr. and New York City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito.
The weather was beautiful, and we thoroughly enjoyed all the delicious food, the great folks and the wonderful entertainment.
I hope this successful pre-summer event serves as the first of many to come in the Mott Haven area of the Bronx.

Asistente legal durante más de 17 años, hasta diciembre de 2010, desde entonces ha dedicado su tiempo a explorar el Bronx. Su energía y entusiasmo son infatigables y admirables.
“Quiero que mis compañeros residentes sean conscientes y estén informados de qué tan hermoso es nuestro vecindario, lo que ofrece y cómo prestar ayuda a nuestro medio ambiente”.De esta nueva etapa de su vida, Martell dice: “Nunca me había sentido tan viva”.
Hubo muchas actividades comunitarias maravillosas y gratuitas organizadas en nuestro condado la semana pasada, tantas que era difícil elegir una.
La Alianza del Río Bronx celebró su Festival anual del Día del Río en el parque Shoelace; Bronxmama y Acuator, Inc. organizaron el evento “Bronx awesome 2014 Father’s Day”; los Urban Park Rangers tuvieron canotaje gratuito en el lago Indian en el parque Crotona; Tanya Fields del Proyecto BLK abrió su granja urbana y Lily Kesselman coordinó el primer mercado de granjeros del Sur del Bronx.
¿Dije que fue un rato ocupado?
Por otra parte, este mes ha estado lleno de logros personales para mi hija menor, incluyendo un baile, su cumpleaños número 18, una ceremonia de premiación escolar e incluso la graduación, todo con una semana de diferencia.
Como se trataba del fin de semana de su cumpleaños, le permití elegir a qué evento deseaba asistir después de su ceremonia de premiación de la escuela preparatoria, donde más de 100 estudiantes del Bronx fueron reconocidos por sus logros académicos.
Fiel a sus raíces del Bronx, escogió una fiesta del barrio, una muy especial.
Nos abrimos paso hacia la avenida Lincoln y la calle 135 para la fiesta de barrio el sur del Bronx enciende Mott Haven.
El evento fue coordinado por SoBro, en asociación con Dancing in the Streets, el Museo Universal Hip Hop y los comerciantes de Mott Haven.
Siempre es agradable disfrutar un día en el Bronx con una mezcla de caras nuevas y conocidas.

Espero que este evento sea un éxito previo al verano y sirva como el primero de muchos por venir en el área de Mott Haven del Bronx.
