Diane had it in the bag. She smiled as she held up a frozen turkey and then placed the bird carefully in her shopping cart. It was precious cargo. The Crotona Park resident had taken the bus to Mott Haven to collect a free turkey being distributed to community members by ArchCare at Home. “It’s wonderful,” she said. “I wouldn’t have had a turkey for Thanksgiving if it wasn’t for this.” Diane was one of more than 2,000 people who lined up outside of ArchCare at Home’s service center at 279 Alexander Avenue on Mon., Nov. 21 to receive a free Thanksgiving turkey. This year, the organization gave away 2,000 frozen birds to local residents in need. A line of eager recipients stretched up the entire block. It marked the 34th consecutive year that the site has hosted the turkey giveaway, said Mary Zagajeski, Chief Executive Officer of ArchCare at Home. The turkeys were provided by a private donor who acquires them from colleagues in the food industry, said Zagajeski. “It means a lot to know that we’re helping out so many people around the holidays,” Zagajeski said. “There are many folks in need of food, and this gives them a chance to have a better hot meal with family this Thanksgiving.” ArchCare at Home delivers home healthcare and related services such as in-home nursing care and rehab, home health aides, pastoral care and maternal health assistance. “We also have several community programs so people can get immediate help with wellness needs,” said Marianne Bogannam, Vice President of Development for ArchCare at Home. The Alexander Avenue site offers drop-in health services, as well as HIV and Hepatitis C testing and counseling, Bogannam said. The group was known was known as Dominican Sisters Family Health Service until becoming part of the ArchCare network in 2016. An arm of the Archdiocese of New York, ArchCare provides home health and other wellness services, and has offices in the Bronx and Northern Manhattan. The Bronx turkey giveaway is one of numerous charitable programs conducted by ArchCare at Home to promote the well-being of residents in underserved communities, said Zagajeski. “It’s great that this is done for the community,” remarked local resident María Montañez, who said she has picked up a free turkey at the site for several years in a row. “I’m not getting food stamps right now, and it’s hard to buy food. A lot of people don’t have the money to have a Thanksgiving dinner.” “It’ll be happier [time] now,” she said. The ArchCare at Home site is located at 279 Alexander Avenue, Bronx, NY 10454.
