The King comes home

Derek Jeter has a little more to worry about this year.
The New York Yankees shortstop and captain recently announced that 2014 would be his last year in pinstripes, or in any other Major League Baseball (MLB) uniform, and that he would officially hang up his cleats at the end of this season.
His announcement drew gasps of surprise, many disappointed sighs – and the growing expectation that Jeter, already a five-time World Series champion, would look to make his last year a winning one.
Ahí viene Romeo.
As announced this past Mon., Feb. 23rd, Grammy Award-nominated bachata superstar and Bronx native Romeo Santos will come home – to play a full concert at Yankee Stadium on July 12th.
And the wagers as to how quickly that event will be nothing short of a staggering home-run spectacle will sell out came swiftly.

“I know he can sell out Yankee Stadium in one month,” said Felix Cabrera, head of Latin Events LLC, which will be coordinating the show.
In response, the artist, née Anthony Santos to a Puerto Rican mother and Dominican father, beamed shyly.
“This is a big responsibility,” he said, “and I’m not going to let you guys down.”
The announcement was made by Santos, Cabrera, New York Yankees President Randy Levine, and New York Yankees Chief Operating Officer Lonn Trost on Monday, the day before the singer’s newest album, Fórmula Vol. 2 hit stores. The album is a follow-up to Santos’s 2011 multiplatinum album Formula Vol. 1, which received a 2013 Grammy nomination for Best Tropical Album and was the first Latin musical release in the last 18 years to produce five No. 1 singles. His last three singles, “Cancioncitas de Amor,” “Odio” and “Propuesta Indecente,” are currently Billboard’s top-three-selling Latin songs in the United States.
While Santos’ lyrical prowess and commanding stage presence have left many enthralled, it was he who said he was awe-struck at the notion of playing at the Stadium.
“This is a dream that has turned to reality,” said the singer/songwriter. “For me, this is a tremendous honor to be in a place of such magnitude.”

And for an artist who lived and toiled for years on the local lounge and club circuit, the concert on River Avenue will serve as a homecoming.
“I always passed by those blocks and saw Yankee Stadium,” he recalled. “I just dreamed of going to going to a game with my dad. I never dreamed of performing here.”
Cabrera, who has coordinated shows for Santos in the past, noted that the artist known as “The King of Bachata” is used to at-capacity venues; he has sold out shows at Madison Square Garden five times.
“He’s demonstrated that all he’s done, he’s done well,” said Cabrera.

“It’s going to be an extraordinary day,” he said of the July performance.
Yankee Stadium has been host to large-scale concerts in the past, with Madonna and Metallica among some of its storied headliners.
It’s only natural to feel nervous at Yankee Stadium, explained President Randy Levine.
“You’re in Yankee Stadium, so pressure comes naturally here,” said Levine. “Everyone wants to play [here].”
But he had no qualms about the summer concert to come.
“We are completely confident that Romeo Santos is going to be a hit,” he said.
“We can now lay claim to bachata,” added COO Trost. “We cannot wait for July.”
On the new album Fórmula Vol. 2, Santos collaborates with Nicki Minaj, Marc Anthony, Drake, Santana and Kevin Hart, among others.

He refused, however, to confirm if any of the other artists would appear on stage with him.
“I believe in an element of surprise, so maybe,” was all he divulged.
Santos said the recording of the album was a “blast.”
“It came together organically,” he recounted. “One of the most interesting experiences was putting the album together.”
Fans will also get a chance to hear Drake sing in Spanish on his track “Odio.”
“He really wanted to sing in Spanish, and that was really organic and cool.”
Santos said, beyond playing at the home of Bombers, he was even more honored to be the first Latino artist to perform at the new stadium; the last was the legendary Fania All Stars in the 1970s.
“We’re always thinking about what we can offer the public,” he said. “I always try to challenge myself, to take it to the next level.”

Derek Jeter tiene un poco más de qué preocuparse este año.
El torpedero de los Yankees de Nueva York, y capitán, anunció recientemente que el 2014 sería su último año en el uniforme de rayas, o en cualquier otro de las Grandes Ligas (MLB), y que colgaría oficialmente sus zapatos al final de esta temporada.
Su anuncio generó exclamaciones de sorpresa, muchos suspiros decepcionados, y la creciente expectativa de que Jeter, cinco veces campeón de la Serie Mundial, hará de su último año uno ganador.
Ahí viene Romeo.
Como se anunció el pasado lunes, 23 de febrero, la superestrella de la bachata Romeo Santos, nominado al premio Grammy y nativo del Bronx, volverá a casa para tocar un concierto completo en el Yankee Stadium el 12 de julio.
Y las apuestas en cuanto a la rapidez con que los boletos para este evento, nada menos que un espectáculo asombroso de jonrones, se venderían, no se hizo esperar.
“Yo sé que él puede vender el Yankee Stadium en un mes”, dijo Félix Cabrera, director de Latin Events LLC, quien coordinará el programa.
En respuesta, el artista, nacido como Anthony Santos, de madre puertorriqueña y padre dominicano, sonrió con timidez.

“Esta es una gran responsabilidad,” dijo, “y no los voy a decepcionar”.
El anuncio fue hecho por Santos, Cabrera, el presidente de los Yankees, Randy Levine, y el director de operaciones de los Yankees, Lonn Trost, el lunes, un día antes de que el nuevo álbum del cantante, Fórmula Vol. 2, llegue a las tiendas. El álbum es una continuación del multiplatino de 2011 de Santos Fórmula Vol. 1.
Mientras la destreza lírica de Santos y su imponente presencia escénica han dejado a muchos cautivados, fue él quien dijo que estaba alucinado ante la idea de tocar en el estadio.

“Este es un sueño que se ha convertido en realidad”, dijo el cantante/compositor. “Para mí, es un gran honor estar en un lugar de tal magnitud”.
Y para un artista que vivió y trabajó durante años en el circuito local de los ‘lounges’ y los clubes, el concierto en la avenida River servirá como un regreso a casa.
“Siempre pasaba por esos bloques y veía el estadio de los Yankees”, recordó. “Yo soñaba con ir a ir a un juego con mi papá. Nunca soñé con hacer una presentación aquí”.
Cabrera, quien ha coordinado espectáculos de Santos en el pasado, señaló que el artista conocido como “El Rey de la Bachata” está acostumbrado a lugares llenos. Ha agotado presentaciones en el Madison Square Garden en cinco ocasiones.
“Ha demostrado que todo lo que ha hecho, lo ha hecho bien”, dijo Cabrera.
“Va a ser un día extraordinario”, dijo sobre la actuación del mes de julio.
El Yankee Stadium ha sido sede de conciertos a gran escala en el pasado, con Madonna y Metallica entre algunas de sus legendarias estrellas.

Es natural sentirse nervioso en el Yankee Stadium, explicó el presidente Randy Levine.
“Estás en El Yankee Stadium, así que la presión es algo natural”, dijo Levine. “Todo el mundo quiere jugar [aquí]”.
Y no tuvo reparos sobre el próximo concierto de verano.
“Estamos completamente seguros de que Romeo Santos va a ser un éxito”, dijo.
“Ahora podemos reivindicar la bachata”, añadió el director de operaciones Trost. “No podemos esperar a que llegue julio”.
En el nuevo álbum Fórmula Vol. 2, Santos colabora con Nicki Minaj, Marc Anthony, Drake, Santana y Kevin Hart, entre otros.
Se negó, sin embargo, a confirmar si alguno de los otros artistas podría aparecer en el escenario con él.

“Creo en el elemento sorpresa, así que tal vez”, fue todo lo divulgó.
Santos dijo que la grabación del álbum fue una “explosión”.
“Surgió naturalmente”, recordó. “Una de las experiencias más interesantes fue armar el álbum”.
Los fans también tendrán la oportunidad de escuchar a Drake cantando en español, en la canción “Odio”.
“Realmente quería cantar en español, y fue muy natural y genial.”
Santos dijo que, más allá de jugar en la casa de los Bombers, estaba aún más honrado de ser el primer artista latino en actuar en el nuevo estadio.
“Siempre estamos pensando en lo que podemos ofrecer al público”, dijo. “Yo siempre trato de desafiarme a mí mismo, para llevarlo al siguiente nivel.”
