Stories to Inspire

In these very difficult economic times, we could all use a little more hope.
There are many inspirational role models found within the Hispanic community, and many of their stories are told in books and stories that can serve as great gifts for the holidays.
Even better, many of these figures hail from the Bronx. From the Honorable Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor to current Borough President Rubén Díaz Jr., these individuals represent achievement and a path to success, especially to young readers from our borough.
And they might just inspire a future Hispanic astronaut, scientist or U.S. President.
The Honorable Judge Sotomayor has her own children’s book, A Judge Grows in The Bronx, which is great reading for children and historians of all ages. The story of a girl from the South Bronx getting appointed to the Supreme Court is a thrilling read, especially because it is no fictional tale.
Harvesting Hope tells the story of Cesar Chávez’s rise from poor field worker to his founding of the National Farm Workers Association, which helped the people in the fields picking the crops organize to demand better working conditions.
Franklin Chang-Díaz was the first Hispanic American astronaut in space. He flew on the Space Shuttle more than six times. He walked in space. He helped build the International Space Station. On one of his space shuttle missions, he helped launch the Galileo robot spacecraft on its mission to Jupiter. Chang-Díaz has been working on improving rocket propulsion technology and is currently trying to make more people aware of the dangers of climate change. A short 12-page book, Franklin Chang-Díaz in Space, about him was published several years ago, and while it is short, it offers a glimpse into an adventurous mind.
Ellen Ochoa was the first Hispanic woman astronaut to go into space. She traveled on the space shuttle Discovery in 1993. She is now the director of the Johnson Space Center in Houston, where astronauts are trained for space flight. She is the first Hispanic ever to achieve this position. Her life story is featured in at least 12 books, including Ellen Ochoa – Pioneering Astronaut.
Luis Walter Álvarez, whose family originated in Cuba, discovered new information about atoms and won the Nobel Prize in physics in 1968. His life and work was written about in a book called Wild Idea Man.
Many of these books cost as little as $5.00.
Using the holiday season to share important stories on individuals whose achievements can inform and motivate is a wonderful way to celebrate accomplishment. It will also give you and your loved ones an opportunity to read, learn and share together – and that is priceless.

En estos tiempos económicos difíciles a todos nos viene bien un poco más de esperanza.
Hay muchos modelos de inspiración en la comunidad hispana, y muchas de sus historias se cuentan en libros e historias que pueden servir como grandes regalos para las fiestas.
Mejor aún, muchas de estas figuras provienen del Bronx. Desde la Honorable juez del Tribunal Supremo, Sonia Sotomayor, al actual presidente del condado Rubén Díaz Jr., estos individuos representan logros y un camino hacia el éxito, especialmente para los lectores jóvenes de nuestro condado.
Y podrían inspirar a un futuro astronauta hispano, científico o Presidente de los Estados Unidos.
La Honorable juez Sotomayor tiene su propio libro para niños, A Judge Grows in the Bronx, que es una gran lectura para niños e historiadores de todas las edades. La historia de una niña del sur del Bronx siendo designada a la Corte Suprema es una lectura apasionante, sobre todo porque no es un cuento de ficción.
