TWU Local 100 endorses Espaillat

Members of the Transport Workers Union Local 100 (TWU) gathered this past Fri, Mar. 14th, to announce the group’s endorsement of State Senator Adriano Espaillat in his bid to represent the 13th Congressional District, which includes Northern Manhattan and the Bronx.
As in 2012, Espaillat is again facing off against the incumbent Congressman Charles Rangel.
The announcement of TWU, which represents more than 54,000 active and retired members in New York, marks the first major union endorsement for the candidate since announcing his candidacy two weeks ago at the United Palace Theatre.
It is also the second time the TWU has bet on Espaillat, as it also rallied behind the challenger in 2012.
“We are proud to endorse Senator Adriano Espaillat’s bid for Congress today,” said John Samuelsen, President of TWU Local 100. “We view Adriano as a powerful force for social justice and we are proud to be part of his coalition of support.”
“I am excited to work with him on initiatives to improve and expand transit service to the City’s traditionally underserved communities,” Samuelsen added.
In turn, Espaillat voiced his enthusiasm for the work ahead.
“I am thrilled to have the support of the union that keeps our city
moving,” said Espaillat. “Our district relies heavily on TWU’s hard-working members to ensure that we get to work on time, our children make it to school safely and our elderly and disabled population can get anywhere they need to go. I am honored to have TWU’s support and I look forward to working with them on my campaign and on capital improvements that help them do their job.”
Espaillat also acknowledged areas of need and stated that he would “fight tirelessly to secure the funding necessary to keep our transit system moving rain, snow or shine.”

Los miembros del Sindicato de Trabajadores de Transporte Local 100 (TWU por sus siglas en inglés) se reunieron el pasado viernes 14 de marzo para anunciar el respaldo del grupo al senador estatal Adriano Espaillat en su candidatura para representar al Distrito Congresional 13, que incluye el norte de Manhattan y el Bronx.
Al igual que en 2012, Espaillat se enfrenta al actual congresista Charles Rangel.
El anuncio de TWU, que representa a más de 54,000 miembros activos y retirados en Nueva York, marca el primer respaldo sindical importante para Espaillat desde que anunció su candidatura hace dos semanas en el Teatro United Palace.
También es la segunda vez que TWU apuesta por Espaillat, ya que apoyó al retador en 2012.
“Estamos orgullosos de respaldar la candidatura del senador Adriano Espaillat para el Congreso hoy”, dijo John Samuelsen, presidente de TWU Local 100. “Consideramos a Adriano como una fuerza poderosa para la justicia social y nos sentimos orgullosos de ser parte de su coalición de apoyo”.
“Estoy muy emocionado de trabajar con él en iniciativas para mejorar y ampliar el servicio de transporte en las comunidades tradicionalmente marginadas de la ciudad”, agregó Samuelsen.
A su vez, Espaillat expresó su entusiasmo por el trabajo futuro.
“Estoy muy contento de tener el apoyo del sindicato que mantiene a nuestra ciudad en movimiento”, dijo Espaillat.
“Nuestro distrito depende en gran medida de los miembros que trabajan duro en TWU para que lleguemos a tiempo al trabajo. Nuestros hijos llegan a la escuela con seguridad y nuestra población de edad avanzada y personas con discapacidad pueden llegar a cualquier lugar al que necesiten ir. Me siento honrado de tener el apoyo de TWU y espero con interés trabajar con ellos en mi campaña y en las mejoras capitales que les ayuden a hacer su trabajo”.
Espaillat también reconoció las áreas de necesidad y declaró que iba a “luchar sin descanso para asegurar los fondos necesarios para mantener nuestro sistema de transporte en movimiento llueve, truene o ventee”.
“Unidos podemos fortalecer nuestra infraestructura”.
