I Love the Bronx: G.I.V.E. at Starlight Park

As part of our ongoing BFP series highlighting the various favorite spaces, things and people in our borough, we turn to Nilka Martell, who continues to explore her hometown. “I am a Bronx native, daughter, sister, mother of three beautiful Bronx babies, photographer, writer and motivator,” says Martell, of Puerto Rican descent.
A paralegal for over 17 years until December 2010, she has since been dedicating her time to exploring the Bronx.
Her energy and enthusiasm are indefatigable, and admirable.
“I want to make my fellow residents aware and informed of how lovely our borough is, what it offers, and how to lend a helping hand in our environment.”
Of this new time in her life, Martell says, “I have never felt so alive.”
This week, Martell points up Starlight Park – and an opportunity to see and experience this water-front gem first-hand.
I’ve written about Starlight Park several times and still hear many of the same questions. Among them are: “Where is this park located?”; “How can it be accessed?”; and “What’s the best way to get there?”.
One of the quirkiest is, “Are you sure there’s a park there?”
Yes – I’m sure there is a park there!
In fact, on Sat., May 4th, between 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. , G.I.V.E., (Getting Involved, Virginia Avenue Efforts), Inc. will be hosting an “It’s My Park” day event at Starlight Park. Here’s your chance to come and check out the park!
G.I.V.E. is a Bronx-based not-for-profit organization whose mission is to create a new culture of environmentally conscious people through block beautification projects, tree stewardship, river clean up, artistic activities and other hands-on volunteer opportunities.
It is also a personal project.
It began during my days of unemployment in 2011 when my children and I decided to clean up our neighborhood. The project drew our attention to the abundant natural spaces within our man-made environment and the need for outdoor activities for our local youth.
Our group started with 3 people, but grew into about 30 volunteers (mostly local youths) within a few months.
By the end of the summer we had adopted 10 newly planted trees and maintained two soil beds (approximately 60 x 2 ft) on a dead-end street.
We were even featured on the “Best of the Bronx” segment of News12.
In 2012, as we continued to flourish, we filed paperwork with the State.
With some grant funding and donations, we were able to complete various projects and coordinate free community events. We also got involved in volunteer work with different organizations and agencies associated with New York City Parks Department.
We constructed ten tree guards and adopted more street trees – 25 in total. In addition, we maintained 40 trees within Concrete Plant Park (part of the Bronx River park system located just south of Starlight Park).
In June, we had the opportunity to appear on Bronx Net’s “Open” and our efforts were highlighted by the Mayor’s office.
Later that year we received MillionTreesNYC’s “Tree Steward of the Year” and “Most Beautiful Tree Bed in the Bronx” awards.
By the fall, over 200 different people volunteered in various projects in the Bronx.
To keep with the momentum, our first event of 2013 will be held in the newly opened waterfront-access Bronx River Greenway treasure: Starlight Park.
On May 4th, we will host a tree stewardship project (50+ trees) and a river bank clean-up.
As we finish off the afternoon, BombaYo will be providing a free interactive cultural presentation. BombaYo is “a youth project dedicated to preserving the rich Afro-Puerto Rican tradition of Bomba” led by José Ortiz a/k/a Dr. Drum.
We will also be assisting in forming “Friends of Starlight Park” – a volunteer group to adopt and care for Starlight Park.

Starlight Park can be accessed several ways.
From the IRT #2/5 West Farms train station, walk one block east to Devoe Avenue. At Devoe Avenue make a right and walk towards the entrance of the Bus Depot. Next to the bus depot entrance is the northern entrance to Starlight Park. It is next to the exit/entrance of the Sheridan Expressway – please wait for the light before crossing. There are also pedestrian ramps by the 174th Street Bridge, near West Farms Road, that led directly into the park. The southern entrance to the park is located along the east side of the Sheridan Expressway. From the IRT #6 Whitlock Avenue station walk towards the Sheridan Expressway. There is a pedestrian walkway along several auto part businesses, and the Sheridan Hotel, keep on that route until you come to the entrance to the park.

“Soy nativa del Bronx, hija, hermana, madre de tres preciosos niños del Bronx, fotógrafa, escritora y motivadora”, dijo Martell, de descendencia puertorriqueña.
Paralegal por más de 17 años hasta diciembre del 2010, desde entonces ha dedicado su tiempo a explorar el Bronx.

“Quiero hacer a mis compañeros residentes concientes e informados de cuan hermoso es nuestro condado, lo que ofrece y como ofrecer una mano amiga a nuestro ambiente”.
De este nuevo tiempo en su vida, Martell dice, “nunca me he sentido más viva”.
Esta semana, Martell señala el Parque Starlight – y una oportunidad de ver y experimentar esta joya frente al agua directamente.
He escrito acerca del Parque Starlight varias veces y sigo escuchando muchas de las mismas preguntas. Entre ellas están: ¿Dónde está localizado el parque?; ¿Cómo se puede llegar a el?; y ¿Cuál es la mejor manera de llegar allí? Una de las más raras es, ¿Está seguro que ahí hay un parque? Si – estoy segura que ahí hay un parque.
De hecho, el sábado, 4 de mayo, entre las 9:00 a.m. y 2:00 p.m., G.I.V.E. (Getting Involved, Virginia Avenue Efforts), Inc. estará llevando a cabo el evento “Es mi Parque” en el Parque Starlight. Esta es su oportunidad de venir y chequear el parque.
G.I.V.E. es una organización sin fines de lucro con sede en el Bronx cuya misión es el crear una nueva cultura de personas concientes del medio ambiente a través de proyectos de embellecimiento de cuadras, cuido de árboles, limpieza de ríos, actividades artísticas y otras oportunidades para voluntarios. También es un proyecto personal. Comenzó durante mis días de desempleo en el 2011 cuando mis hijos y yo decidimos limpiar nuestro vecindario. El proyecto atrajo nuestra atención a los abundantes espacios naturales dentro de nuestro ambiente hecho por el hombre y la necesidad de actividades al aire libre para nuestros jóvenes locales. Nuestro grupo comenzó con 3 personas, pero en varios meses creció a casi cerca 30 voluntarios (mayormente jóvenes locales).
Para finales del verano habíamos adoptado 10 recién sembrados árboles y mantuvimos dos espacios de tierra (aproximadamente 60 x 2 pies) en una calle sin salida.
Hasta fuimos presentados en el segmento de News 12 “Lo Mejor del Bronx”.
En el 2012, mientras continuábamos floreciendo, llenamos papeles con el estado.
Con algunas subvenciones y donaciones, pudimos completar varios proyectos y coordinar eventos comunales gratuitos. También nos envolvimos en trabajo voluntario con diferentes organizaciones y agencias asociadas con el Departamento de Parques de la ciudad de Nueva York.
Construimos diez guarderías de árboles y adoptamos más árboles de la calle – 25 en total. Además mantuvimos 40 árboles dentro del Parque Concrete Plant (parte del sistema de parques del Bronx River localizado justo al sur del Parque Starlight). En junio, tuvimos la oportunidad de aparecer en el ‘Bronx Net’s Open’ y nuestros esfuerzos fueron destacados por la oficina del Alcalde. Más tarde en ese año recibimos los premios del ‘MillionTreesNYC Tree Steward of the Year” y “Most Beautiful Tree Bed in the Bronx”.
Para el otoño, más de 200 personas eran voluntarias en varios proyectos en el Bronx.
Para mantener esta actividad, nuestro primer evento del 2013 se llevará a cabo en el recién abierto acceso a la orilla ‘Bronx River Greenway’: el Parque Starlight.
El 4 de mayo, auspiciaremos un proyecto de cuido de árboles (50 + árboles) y una limpieza de la orilla del río.
Según terminemos la tarde, BombaYo estará provenido un presentación cultural interactiva gratuita. BombaYo es un “proyecto de jóvenes dedicado a preservar la rica tradición afro-puertorriqueña de la bomba” dirigida por José Ortiz a/k/a Dr. Drum. También estaremos ayudando en formar “Amigos del Parque Starlight” – un grupo de voluntarios para adoptar y cuidar el Parque Starlight.

El Parque Starlight tiene acceso de varias maneras.
Desde la estación del tren IRT #2/5 West Farms, camine un bloque al este a la Avenida Devoe. En la Avenida Devoe haga una derecha y camine hacia la entrada del Almacén de Autobuses. Al lado de la entrada del almacén de autobuses está la entrada del norte del Parque Starlight. Está al lado de la salida/entrada del Sheridan Expressway – favor de esperar por la luz antes de cruzar. También hay rampas de peatones en el Puente de la Calle 174, cerca de West Farms Road, que lleva directamente hacia el parque. La entrada del sur está localizada a lo largo del lado este del Sheridan Expressway. De la estación del tren IRT #6 de la Avenida Whitlock camine hacia el Sheridan Expressway. Hay un camino peatonal a lo largo de varios comercios de piezas de auto, y el Hotel Sheridan, siga en esa ruta hasta que encuentre la entrada al parque.
