I Love the Bronx: Upstream Soirée

Since 2011, my children and I have volunteered with the Bronx River Alliance.
The Alliance serves as a coordinated voice for the Bronx River, New York City’s only fresh water river. The group works to protect, improve and restore the River, as well as its greenway.
Growing up, my family would spend a couple of weeks in the summer visiting family in Puerto Rico. I remember the creek near my grandma’s home in Adjuntas. My cousins, sisters and I waded and splashed around in the river all day long.
In contrast, back home in the Bronx, our river was quite polluted. I can still recall the stench, and the eyesore, by Westchester Avenue. There was nothing appealing about our river, nothing inviting, and the thought of it being restored had never crossed my mind.
In 2011, my children and I attended an event at Concrete Plant Park, a waterfront access park just south of Westchester Avenue by Edgewater Road. There was free community paddling. We took advantage of the opportunity and had our first experience canoeing the Bronx River. Though not 100% clean, it wasn’t the same river I recalled when I was growing up.
It was cleaner, there was wildlife and we had the opportunity to experience it all.
From that day on, we volunteered in whatever capacity the Alliance needed. This included weed removal, tree plantings, canoe events, park and river clean-ups, mobilizing volunteers, collecting data, photography, etc.
We even formed a not-for-profit, G.I.V.E., and assisted in several events with the Bronx River Alliance.
My children not only learned to canoe and kayak, but also volunteered in taking others out on the River. They especially enjoy pointing out aquatic life and sharing stories of the Alliance’s restoration work and local history.
I can truly say that the Bronx River has transformed our lives. It is not simply a waterway, it is an open classroom and offers the opportunity for us to get others to fall in with the river as well.
The Alliance hosts an annual fundraiser every fall.
The “Upstream Soirée” is a celebration of the work completed in and along the Bronx River, and a glimpse of what’s to come. This year it will be held on Tues., Sept. 29th, from 6:30 – 9 p.m., at the Schiff Family Great Hall in the Bronx Zoo.
Different tiers of tickets are available, beginning at $175, and the evening will be filled with great company, live music, food and drink, a silent auction, an award ceremony and a swag bag. This year there are two honorees. The architects Kiss & Cathcart are being recognized for their design of the Bronx River Alliance’s headquarters, the River House at Starlight Park. It is scheduled to be completed later this year. The headquarters will allow the Alliance the space to conduct even more community programming. In 2008, the River House received a Design Award from the Art Commission of the City of New York.
And much to my surprise and delight, our group’s volunteer work is also being recognized this year.

Desde 2011, mis hijos y yo hemos sido voluntarios en la Alianza del Río Bronx.
La Alianza sirve como una voz coordinada para el río Bronx, único río de agua dulce de la ciudad de Nueva York. El grupo trabaja para proteger, mejorar y restaurar el río, así como su vía verde.
Al crecer, mi familia pasaba unas semanas en el verano visitando a familiares en Puerto Rico. Recuerdo el arroyo cerca de la casa de mi abuela en Adjuntas. Mis primos, hermanas y yo caminábamos por el agua y chapoteábamos a su alrededor todo el día.
Por el contrario, de vuelta a casa en el Bronx, nuestro río estaba bastante contaminado. Todavía recuerdo el hedor y la monstruosidad por la avenida Westchester. No había nada atractivo en nuestro río, nada acogedor, y la idea de que sería restaurado nunca me pasó por la cabeza.
En 2011, mis hijos y yo asistimos a un evento en Concrete Plant Park, un acceso al parque por la línea de playa justo al sur de la avenida Westchester, por Edgewater Road. Hubo remo comunitario gratuito. Aprovechamos la oportunidad y tuvimos nuestra primera experiencia en canoa en el Río Bronx. Aunque no estaba 100% limpio, no era el mismo río que yo recordaba.
Estaba limpio, había vida salvaje y tuvimos la oportunidad de experimentar todo.
Desde ese día hemos sido voluntarios en la Alianza de cualquier forma que nos ha necesitado: eliminando maleza, sembrando árboles, en eventos en canoa, en limpiezas de parque y río, movilizando voluntarios, recopilando datos, tomando fotografías, etc.
Incluso formamos una organización sin fines de lucro, G.I.V.E., y colaboramos en varios eventos con la Alianza del Río Bronx.
Mis hijos no solo aprendieron a navegar en canoa y kayak, sino que también se ofrecieron como voluntarios llevando a otros al río. Ellos disfrutan especialmente señalando la vida acuática y compartiendo historias sobre los trabajos de restauración de la Alianza y la historia local.
Puedo decir que el Río Bronx ha transformado nuestras vidas. No es simplemente una vía acuática, es un aula abierta y nos ofrece la oportunidad de lograr que otros también se involucren con el río.
La Alianza organiza una colecta anual cada otoño.
La “velada contracorriente” es una celebración de la obra ejecutada en y a lo largo del río Bronx, y una ojeada a lo que está por venir. Este año se llevará a cabo el martes 29 de septiembre, de 6:30 a 9 pm, en el Gran Salón de la Familia Schiff en el Zoológico del Bronx.
Diferentes niveles de boletos están disponibles a partir de $175 dólares. La noche estará llena de buena compañía, música en vivo, comida y bebida, una subasta silenciosa, una ceremonia de premiación y una bolsa de regalos. Este año hay dos homenajeados: los arquitectos Kiss & Cathcart serán reconocidos por su diseño de la sede de la Alianza del Río Bronx, River House en Starlight Park. Está previsto que se complete a finales de este año. La sede le dará a la Alianza el espacio para llevar a cabo aún más programación comunitaria. En 2008, River House recibió un premio de diseño de la Comisión de Arte de la ciudad de Nueva York.
Y para mi sorpresa y deleite, el trabajo voluntario de nuestro grupo también será reconocido este año.
