I Love the Bronx: #intheBronx

As part of our ongoing BFP series highlighting the various favorite spaces, things and people in our borough, we turn to Nilka Martell, who continues to explore her hometown.

“I am a Bronx native, daughter, sister, mother of three beautiful Bronx babies, photographer, writer and motivator,” says Martell, of Puerto Rican descent.

A paralegal for over 17 years until December 2010, she has since been dedicating her time to exploring the Bronx.

Her energy and enthusiasm are indefatigable, and admirable.

“I want to make my fellow residents aware and informed of how lovely our borough is, what it offers, and how to lend a helping hand in our environment.”

Of this new time in her life, Martell says, “I have never felt so alive.”

Available on most mobile phones, Instagram is a photo and video application that allows you to snap a picture on your phone and share it with family and friends by posting them to your account.

Though folks use their account for various reasons, earlier this year I decided to use my Instagram account to promote the Bronx. Throughout the months, I have posted over 1000 photographs and used the hashtag “#intheBronx”.

My purpose was to highlight scenes, parks, restaurants, architecture, art, life, and history of our borough, and to promote events taking place here.

In the hunt recently for a specific photograph, my son and I had no choice but to look through hundreds of photographs on Instagram to find it. As we searched, various photographs stirred up questions and sparked conversation.

It wasn’t long before we were sidetracked altogether as we shared one story after another.

Photographs are captured moments, and when you revisit the image, it often has the ability of transporting you to a specific time and place.

There are pictures of dishes I have eaten at some wonderful Bronx restaurants such as Taquería Tlaxcalli, Mexicocina, El Habanero, Siete Ocho Siete, Sapito’s and Spoto’s. There are images of amazing buildings on the Grand Concourse, the Fish Building, the Lewis Morris, the Executive Tower, the old Concourse Plaza Hotel and beautiful buildings all around the Grand Concourse.

There are also photos taken within historic districts that include old advertisements that still grace the side of buildings, as well as markers and signs with historical information. Then there are pictures of urban scenes, which include youths on skateboards, street art and a few open hydrants.

Also included are photographs of well-known sites like Yankee Stadium, New York Botanical Garden and the Bronx Zoo.

But my favorite pictures are moments captured in nature; there are pictures of different sections of the Bronx River, the Hutchinson River, and of trees and parks throughout the borough.

As we searched, I identified a few of favorite pictures, all taken on the same day. I had been in attendance at a meeting at the top floor of the Executive Tower, and took photos of Yankee Stadium and Joyce Kilmer Park.

Much as I enjoyed taking those pictures, reliving the moments proved even more enjoyable.

Poring through the photos actually inspired us, and we’ve already started a list of places we’d like to highlight in 2015.

We love the Bronx, and know you do too.

“Soy una nativa del Bronx, hija, hermana, madre de tres hermosos bebés del Bronx, fotógrafa, escritora y motivadora”, dice Martell, de ascendencia puertorriqueña.

Asistente legal durante más de 17 años, hasta diciembre de 2010, desde entonces ha dedicado su tiempo a explorar el Bronx. Su energía y entusiasmo son infatigables y admirables.

“Quiero que mis compañeros residentes sean conscientes y estén informados de qué tan hermoso es nuestro condado, lo que ofrece y cómo ayudar a nuestro medio ambiente”.

De esta nueva etapa de su vida, Martell dice: “Nunca me había sentido tan viva”.

Disponible en la mayoría de los teléfonos móviles, Instagram es una aplicación de fotografía y video que permite tomar fotografías con el teléfono y compartirlas con amigos y familiares publicándolas en su cuenta.

Aunque la gente utiliza su cuenta por diversas razones, a principios de este año decidí usar la mía para promover el Bronx. A lo largo de los meses he publicado más de 1,000 fotografías y he utilizado el hashtag “#intheBronx”.

Mi propósito era destacar escenas, parques, restaurantes, la arquitectura, el arte, la vida y la historia de nuestro condado, y promover los eventos que tienen lugar aquí.

Buscando recientemente una fotografía específica, mi hijo y yo no tuvimos más remedio que revisar cientos de fotografías de Instagram para encontrarla, varias de las fotografías que encontramos provocaron preguntas y pláticas.

No pasó mucho tiempo antes de que nos desviáramos del todo mientras compartíamos una historia tras otra.

Las fotografías son momentos capturados y cuando ves la imagen de nuevo, tiene la capacidad de trasladarte a un tiempo y lugar específico.

Hay fotos de platos que he comido en algunos restaurantes maravillosos del Bronx como: Taquería Tlaxcalli, Mexicocina, El Habanero, Siete Ocho Siete, Sapito’s y Spoto’s. Hay imágenes de edificios impresionantes del Grand Concourse, el edificio pescado, el Lewis Morris, la Torre Ejecutiva, el viejo Concourse Plaza Hotel y hermosos edificios de todo Grand Concourse.

También hay fotos tomadas dentro de los distritos históricos que incluyen anuncios antiguos que todavía adornan el lado de los edificios, así como marcadores y señales con información histórica.

Luego están las imágenes de escenas urbanas, que incluyen jóvenes en patinetas, arte callejero y unos pocos hidrantes abiertos. También se incluyen fotografías de sitios bien conocidos como estadio de los Yankees, el Jardín Botánico de Nueva York y el Zoológico del Bronx.

Pero mis fotos favoritas son de momentos capturados en la naturaleza; hay fotos de diferentes secciones del río Bronx, el río Hutchinson y de árboles y parques en toda la ciudad.

En la búsqueda, identifiqué algunas de las imágenes favoritas, todas tomadas en el mismo día. Asistí a una reunión en el último piso de la Torre Ejecutiva, y tome fotos del estadio de los Yankees y del parque Joyce Kilmer.

Por mucho que me gustó tomar esas fotos, revivir los momentos resultó aún más agradable. Estudiar las fotos en realidad nos inspiró, y ya hemos empezado una lista de lugares que nos gustaría destacar en 2015.

Nos encanta el Bronx, y sabemos que a ti también.
