Summer Youth Employment
The Department of Youth and Community Development is now accepting applications for its Summer Youth program. Summer Youth provides paid summer employments and job readiness training for 6 weeks in July and August to those ages 14-24.
Employment programs will be located in community-based organizations across the five boroughs and participants are selected through a lottery.
Application deadlines are April 10th 2015.

The Sculpture of Food
On Fri., Apr. 10th at 7 p.m., New York City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito will host the next installment of her “Follow Me Friday” events at the Bronx River Art’s Center (BRAC).
This initiative, which was started by Speaker Mark-Viverito last year, looks to draw her constituents to visit and support local businesses, locations and destinations within her district.
The Bronx River Art’s Center event will be an exhibit titled “The Sculpture of Food”. Curated by Karine Duteil, “The Sculpture of Food” is part of BRAC’s larger curatorial effort to draw attention to food as a creative medium and muse, indicator of culture, and pressing social and political issue as specific to the Bronx.
The Bronx River Art Center is located at 305 East 140th Street.

Plena Libre
The four-time Grammy nominated 12-piece ensemble Plena Libre will perform at the Hostos Center for the Arts and Culture on Thurs., Apr. 23rd.
The group, which hails from Puerto Rico, will bring its unique, high-energy blend of bomba, plena and Caribbean grooves, ranging from salsa to merengue, mambo and more.
The show will begin at 7 p.m.

Four Hand Band
On Sat., Apr. 4th at 2:30 p.m., the Bronx Library Center will host The Papernik + Wu Piano Duo. The duo (one piano/four hands) will perform music from their debut album, Four Hand Band, a collection of piano duets and solos.
Some of the songs featured include Mozart’s Eine Kleine Nachtmusik and Bizet’s opera Carmen, along with Argentine tangos, Russian dances and a medley of Broadway songs by Gershwin, Bernstein and Berlin. The tag team duo has performed at Lincoln Center, Steinway Series at the Smithsonian, and the 92nd Street Y.
This is a free event.

Empleo Juvenil de Verano
El Departamento de Desarrollo Juvenil y Comunitario está aceptando solicitudes para su programa juvenil de verano. Verano para Jóvenes proporciona empleos pagados de verano y capacitación laboral durante 6 semanas entre julio y agosto a jóvenes de entre 14 y 24 años.
Los programas de empleo se encuentran en organizaciones comunitarias en los cinco condados y los participantes son seleccionados a través de una lotería.
La fecha límite de inscripción es el 10 de abril de 2015.

The Sculpture of Food
El viernes 10 de abril a las 7 p.m., la presidenta del Concejo Municipal de la ciudad de Nueva York, Melissa Mark-Viverito, será la anfitriona de la próxima entrega de su evento “Viernes de Sígueme” en el Centro de Arte del Río Bronx (BRAC por sus siglas en inglés).
Esta iniciativa, que comenzó la presidenta Mark-Viverito el año pasado, busca que sus electores visiten y apoyen a las empresas, lugares y destinos dentro de su distrito.
El evento del Centro de Arte del Río Bronx consistirá en una exhibición titulada “The Sculpture of Food”. Curada por Karine Duteil, “The Sculpture of Food” es parte de un esfuerzo curatorial mayor de BRAC para llamar la atención hacia los alimentos como medio creativo y musa, indicador de la cultura y medio de presión de temas sociales y políticos específicos del Bronx.
El Centro de Arte Río Bronx está ubicado en el 305 de la calle 140 este.

Plena Libre
El conjunto de 12 piezas cuatro veces nominado al Grammy, Plena Libre, actuará en el Centro Hostos para las Artes y la Cultura el jueves 23 de abril.
El grupo, oriundo de Puerto Rico, traerá su singular mezcla de gran energía de bomba, plena y ritmos del Caribe, que van desde la salsa al merengue, mambo y más.
El espectáculo comenzará a las 7 p.m.

El sábado 4 de abril a las 2:30 p.m., el Bronx Library Center recibirá al dúo The Papernik + Wu Piano. El dúo (un piano, cuatro manos) interpretará música de su álbum debut, Four Hand Band, una colección de dúos y solos de piano.
Algunas de las canciones que se presentarán serán: Eine Kleine Nachtmusik de Mozart y la ópera Carmen de Bizet, junto con tangos argentinos, bailes rusos y un popurrí de canciones de Broadway de Gershwin, Bernstein y Berlín. El dúo se ha presentado en el Lincoln Center, la Serie Steinway del Smithsonian, y la Y de la calle 92.
