Bowl Blitz in the Bronx

Though two teams from west of the Mississippi will be duking it out for the Vince Lombardi Trophy in New Jersey come Super Bowl weekend, the Bronx will not be far from the action. As per a ten-year tradition, the music network VH1 is marking the celebration of one of the largest sports events in the country with music.
But this year will be a bigger ban than ever, promised Rick Krim, head of VH1’s music and talent department.
“Because the game’s coming to New York City, it’s a big deal and we decided to do six shows,” he said.
So VH1 is bringing the Super Bowl Blitz: Six Nights + Six Concerts, with venues in each of New York City’s five boroughs, as well as a show in New Jersey.
The shows will lead up all week to the Super Bowl game on Sun., Feb. 2.
J. Cole will be performing at the Kupferberg Center for the Arts, Queens College, Fall Out Boy will be playing at Brooklyn Bowl, TLC at the Beacon Theater in Manhattan, The Goo Goo Dolls at the St. George Theater in Staten Island, Gavin DeGraw in New Jersey.

And in the Bronx?
Janelle Monae, an award-winning disciple of psychedelic soul who has collaborated with Erykah Badu, Lupe Fiasco, and Fun., will be performing at Lehman College’s Lehman Center, which can fit 2,310 lucky fans.
“Gonna be good,” promised Monae on Twitter.
It will be her first time performing for VH1.
And the concert is free – you just have to snag a ticker in a special online lottery.
“Because her performances are so special, we’ve been wanting to do a show with her,” said Krim. “She takes things to a different level.”
Her music includes several strains of other genres, including classical, folk, ska and jazz. The tapestry of sound from an eclectic mix of instruments provides an electric backdrop for her charged performances; once, during the Grammys, she crowd surfed as she sang.

“Even in that setting, she was great,” said Krim.
VH1 purposefully selected not to have the performances at larger venues, bypassing places like Madison Square Garden and the Barclay Center for more intimate venues.
“It makes it special. As a music fan, I love seeing music at a smaller venue,” said Krim. “When we go to bigger venues it requires a massive production. This allows us to be a little more creative.”
And Lehman had other draws.
“The idea of being at a college was attractive,” said Krim. “Getting a young and enthusiastic crowd is a good thing. That they normally won’t have a Janelle Monae show there will add to the uniqueness of the event.”
The concert is tomorrow, Tues., Jan. 28th at 9:30 p.m.

Aunque dos equipos del oeste del Mississippi resolverán a golpes quién gane el Trofeo Vince Lombardi en Nueva Jersey en el próximo Super Bowl este fin de semana, el Bronx no estará lejos de la acción. De acuerdo con una tradición de diez años, la red de música VH1 está marcando la celebración de uno de los mayores eventos deportivos en el país con música.
Pero este año será una prohibición más grande que nunca, prometió Rick Krim, responsable del departamento de música y talento. VH1
“Que el juego llegue a la ciudad de Nueva York, es una gran cosa y decidimos hacer seis shows”, dijo.
Así, VH1 trae Super Bowl Blitz: Seis Noches + Seis conciertos, con sedes en cada uno de los cinco condados de la ciudad de Nueva York y una presentación en Nueva Jersey.
Los espectáculos precederán la semana previa al partido del Super Bowl el domingo 2 de febrero.

“Debido a que sus actuaciones son tan especiales, hemos querido hacer un show con ella”, dijo Krim. “Ella lleva las cosas a un nivel diferente”.
Su música incluye varios compases de otros géneros, incluyendo clásica, folk, ska y jazz. El tapiz de sonido a partir de una mezcla ecléctica de instrumentos proporciona un telón de fondo eléctrico para sus cargadas interpretaciones; una vez, durante los Grammy, surfeó la multitud mientras cantaba.
Monae llegó por primera vez a las oficinas de Manhattan de VH1 después de que lanzó su primer álbum, Metropolis, en 2007, cantando algunas canciones en el vestíbulo.

“Incluso en ese entorno, estuvo genial”, dijo Krim.
VH1 intencionalmente seleccionó no tener las presentaciones en lugares más grandes, evitando el Madison Square Garden y el Centro Barclay por lugares más íntimos.
“Lo hace especial. Como fanático de la música, me encanta verla en un lugar más pequeño”, dijo Krim. “Cuando vamos a lugares más grandes se requiere de una producción masiva. Esto nos permite ser un poco más creativos”.
Y Lehman tenía otras ventajas.
“La idea de estar en una universidad resultaba atractiva”, dijo Krim. “Obtener una multitud joven y entusiasta es algo bueno. El que normalmente no tuvieran un espectáculo de Janelle Monae le añade singularidad al evento”.
El concierto es mañana, martes 28 de enero a las 9:30 pm.
