Prestigious WHO/UNICEF Initiative certifies facility in the South Bronx By Dr. Ronald Bainbridge, MD
For holding the highest standards in maternity and neonatal care by encouraging and supporting breastfeeding, Lincoln Medical Center in the South Bronx has received the international “Baby-Friendly” designation, an honor granted by a global initiative sponsored by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF). Lincoln is now the only hospital in The Bronx, the third within the NYC Health and Hospitals Corporation, and the fourth citywide, to receive this recognition by “Baby-Friendly USA”. The initiative was established to encourage hospitals to offer an optimal level of care for breastfeeding mothers, infants and their families. Since 2009, Lincoln has implemented major improvements that have enhanced services and care for pregnant women and babies, such as a new and expanded Labor and Delivery Suite, which include state-of-the-art postpartum, neonatal and nursery units. In addition, the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit has added a breast milk pumping room for mothers, and a Breastfeeding Team that includes seven specialized nurses. The Women, Infants and Children Program (WIC) inaugurated another lactation room, and also provides a Breastfeeding Peer Counselor, and a monthly Breastfeeding Club for group support. In 2013, the hospital updated its procedures to ensure that mothers and their newborns would not be separated after birth unless there is a medical need. Similarly, the staff at Lincoln receives training, and a poster campaign highlights the importance of breastfeeding within the hospital. A Breastfeeding Committee that encompasses at least six major units has further ensured that Lincoln provides the information, confidence and skills that mothers need to successfully initiate and continue breastfeeding. In 2014, Lincoln received the International Board Certified Lactation Consultant Care Award, another major global recognition for excellence in lactation care. Lincoln had 2,267 births in 2014. Of those, 93% of the mothers initiated breastfeeding. The figure surpasses the 82% intended-target of mothers to initiate breastfeeding by the year 2020, set by the Surgeon General’s Healthy People Initiative. Studies have demonstrated that breastfeeding provides health benefits to both mother and baby. Breastfed newborns have lower risk of ear and respiratory infections, diabetes and obesity. Breastfeeding mothers have lower risk for breast and ovarian cancers, diabetes and postpartum depression. The Bronx has the highest level of obesity, asthma and diabetes, which are less likely to occur in breastfeeding families. Promoting the benefits of breastfeeding and supporting mothers who do, will help make the Bronx healthier, one mother and baby at a time. El Hospital Lincoln en el Sur del Bronx ha recibido la prestigiosa certificación “Baby-Friendly” (Apto para Bebés), que otorga una iniciativa internacional auspiciada por la Organización Mundial de la Salud (WHO en inglés) y el Fondo para la Infancia de las Naciones Unidas (UNICEF). Lincoln es ahora el único hospital en El Bronx, el tercero en el sistema de hospitales públicos HHC y el cuarto en toda la ciudad, que recibe este reconocimiento que concede “Baby-Friendly USA”. La iniciativa fue creada para motivar a los hospitales mundiales a ofrecer altos niveles de cuidado de salud para niños, familias y las madres que lactan. Desde el año 2009, Lincoln ha implementado grandes mejoras a los servicios y cuidados para mujeres embarazadas y los bebés, incluyendo una moderna y ampliada Unidad de Partos y Nacimientos, compuesta por unidades avanzadas de cuidado neonatal, postparto y enfermería. Asimismo, la Unidad de Cuidado Intensivo Neonatal agregó una sala de bombeo de lecha materna y estableció un equipo especializado en lactancia compuesto por siete enfermeras. El programa para Mujeres, Bebés y Niños (WIC en inglés) inauguró otra sala de lactancia y también facilita una consejera en asuntos de lactancia, y un grupo de apoyo mensual para las madres que lactan. En el año 2013, el hospital modernizó sus procedimientos para asegurar que las madres y sus recién nacidos no serán separados después del parto, a menos que exista una necesidad médica. En adición, el personal del Lincoln ha recibido capacitación y se ha lanzado una campaña de afiches que destacan la importancia de lactar. Un Comité de Lactancia compuesto por al menos seis unidades, ha ayudado a que Lincoln proporcione aún más la información, confianza y habilidades que las madres necesitan para iniciar exitosamente la lactancia y continuar lactando. En el 2014, Lincoln recibió el Premio de la Junta Internacional para Asesores del Cuidado de Lactancia, otro prestigioso reconocimiento mundial por la excelencia en el cuidado de lactancia.
