They started with a tent and a table. Now, it was time to cut the ribbon on a storefront location at Southern Boulevard and East 163rd Street. Even Santa was making a cameo appearance at the December 12 grand opening of the new flagship MetroPlus Health Plan office. In addition to advising Old St. Nick what they wanted for Christmas, children received wrapped presents and rainbow colored Slinkys, and took pictures in a photo booth. Anjelica Díaz waited in a long line with her son Damien and niece Kylee to see Santa. As the line extended halfway down the block, Díaz said, “My son wanted to see [him]. And I always tell him never to give up on what you believe in.” Children were dancing to the latest tunes blaring from the Hot 97 DJ in attendance. Afterward, they could get free eye exams. Díaz said she’s happy to have that service. “It’s good, especially when you don’t have anything in your pocket. You can see what they need.” Providing those additional free services in Hunts Point is one of MetroPlus’s goals, said Roger Milliner, the organization’s Chief Growth Officer. The 953 Southern Boulevard location will have a calendar full of events, including coat drives, workshops on receiving the Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program (SNAP, or food stamps), blood pressure screenings. The site will also offer classes for learning English as a Second Language (ESL). MetroPlus is a wholly owned subsidiary of New York City Heath + Hospitals, the nation’s largest public health system. It has more than 500,000 members, and approximately 26 percent of those members live in the Bronx. Milliner said MetroPlus is actively targeting Bronx residents because 22 percent of its residents are uninsured. “That is unacceptable,” he said. “We are here to make sure to bring that number dramatically down.” MetroPlus’s Bronx Regional Manager Rasheeda Petersen said there is a great need for services in the borough. “We started with a tent and a table on 163rd Street,” she said. “We only had one rep, but on average he was doing about ten applications per day.” Getting people enrolled in health insurance is rewarding, said Petersen. “You are really helping people. We constantly have people coming back and saying, I didn’t have health insurance, and I got it and now I went to the doctor and I’m able to get screened for cancer. We constantly have people coming back in tears with success stories. You never really know how important it is.” New York State’s open enrollment extends to January 31st. Milliner said MetroPlus has healthcare plans for nearly everyone—including people with low or no income and undocumented immigrants. Those plans are scaled to income. “It’s also a small scale if they get hospitalized,” said Milliner. “They won’t pay what someone who has commercial insurance will pay.” The opening capped off a momentous week for MetroPlus, as it was ranked the city’s highest rated health plan on December 17, based on the state department’s 2018 Consumer’s Guide to Medicaid and Child Health Plus Managed Care Plans, which rates plans on quality of care and members’ satisfaction. “This outstanding result is another indication of the superior healthcare and coverage that MetroPlus members receive and is reflective of the excellent MetroPlus provider network that puts quality healthcare – and our members – first,” said President and CEO Dr. Arnold Saperstein. Díaz agreed that the new MetroPlus location would benefit the neighborhood, especially families like her own. “When you have kids, you have to take them to the doctor,” she said. MetroPlus celebrates flagship ribbon-cutting
“Although we did have a number of RV-recreational vehicles, we said [it was time to] open up an old fashioned brick-and-mortar in several places in the Bronx. This is one of the few locations we’ve opened up recently, and we want to make sure that people use this as a service for them. They can hold events here, they can hold meetings here if they choose,” said Milliner. “It’s a full service place, not just health insurance.”
