I Love the Bronx: The state of the borough

As part of our ongoing BFP series highlighting the various favorite spaces, things and people in our borough, we turn to Nilka Martell, who continues to explore her hometown.
“I am a Bronx native, daughter, sister, mother of three beautiful Bronx babies, photographer, writer and motivator,” says Martell, of Puerto Rican descent.
A paralegal for over 17 years until December 2010, she has since been dedicating her time to exploring the Bronx.
Her energy and enthusiasm are indefatigable, and admirable.
“I want to make my fellow residents aware and informed of how lovely our borough is, what it offers, and how to lend a helping hand in our environment.”
Of this new time in her life, Martell says, “I have never felt so alive.”
Martell writes this week of the “New Bronx” as outlined by the Borough President in his annual address on the state of affairs in the Bronx.
Bronx Borough President Rubén Díaz Jr. delivered the State of the Borough Address on Tues., Feb. 20th at James Monroe High School.
Hundreds of people gathered, including elected officials, family, friends, supporters and members of the Bronx community.
During his discourse, Borough President Díaz spoke about “the New Bronx” where “crime is down, investment is high, our neighborhoods are cleaner, and our economy is growing”.
In response to the gun violence, he introduced a new initiative – a registry for gun crimes, similar to the one that exists for sex offenders.
It calls for offenders of gun-related crimes to keep up-to-date records of their resident and employment information with the police.
This public information would be accessible online and would allow Bronxites to know how many, if any, gun offenders are living in their neighborhoods.
Borough President Díaz also spoke about the investments being made in the Bronx.
Among them were the imminent arrival of Fresh Direct, Smith Electric, Baco Enterprises, Fairway Bakery, and the Bronx Brewery; projects such as the Metro-North stations in Hunts Point, Parkchester/Van Nest, Morris Park and Co-op City; the construction of the Marriot Hotel; the Montefiore Medical Center office tower in the Hutchinson Metro Center; and just a little further north, the first indoor mall being constructed in Co-op City.
All of these projects have the potential to boost our economy and create thousands of jobs in the construction field and permanent jobs in the fields of healthcare, hospitality and retail.
The Borough President made sure to note that his office is working along with these companies to assure that a percentage of these jobs are set aside for Bronxites.
In regards to education, Borough President Díaz spoke about the underrepresentation of Bronx students in Specialized High Schools. A report released last May calls for the Department of Education to expand test preparation to disadvantaged communities and to seek alternative methods of admissions to Specialized High Schools.
We all know that the future of our borough lies in the hands of our children and education is the key to their success.
These resources are much needed in our borough and President Díaz said that his office was on the frontlines fighting for the betterment of the educational system as it affects the Bronx.
It’s all exciting news for the borough – the “New Bronx!”
I know all too well the images of the burning Bronx, the drug epidemic and street violence in the 70’s and 80’s.
We have come a long way, and are still working very hard to ensure the best for the Bronx.
2014 marks the 100 anniversary of the borough of the Bronx.
In the months to come, the Borough President’s office will announce the formation of different committees responsible for the next year’s festivities.
This column, and this paper, will keep you apprised of the various festivities within our borough so you can come out and celebrate its history, richness and progress.
In closing, the Borough President Díaz remarked, “We have to keep going. We must persevere. We must push forward. During the next four years we will—together as ‘One Bronx’—as a ‘New Bronx,’ to bring about meaningful change to our borough.”

“Soy una nativa del Bronx, hija, hermana, madre de tres hermosos bebés Bronx, fotógrafa, escritora y motivadora”, dice Martell, de ascendencia puertorriqueña.
Asistente legal durante más de 17 años, hasta diciembre de 2010, desde entonces ha dedicado su tiempo a explorar el Bronx. Su energía y entusiasmo son infatigables y admirables.
“Quiero que mis compañeros residentes sean conscientes y estén informados de qué tan hermoso es nuestro vecindario, lo que ofrece y cómo prestar ayuda a nuestro medio ambiente”.
De esta nueva etapa de su vida, Martell dice: “Nunca me había sentido tan viva”.
Martell escribe esta semana del “Nuevo Bronx” como fue delineado por el presidente del condado en su discurso anual del estado de los asuntos en el Bronx.
El presidente del condado del Bronx, Rubén Díaz, Jr. dio el discurso del Estado del Condado el martes, 20 de febrero en la Escuela Superior James Monroe.
Cientos de personas se reunieron incluyendo a los oficiales electos, familiares, amigos, seguidores y miembros de la comunidad del Bronx.
Durante su discurso, el presidente Díaz habló acerca del “Nuevo Bronx” donde “el crimen está bajo, las inversiones altas, nuestros vecindarios están más limpios y nuestra economía está creciendo”.
En respuesta a la violencia de armas, una nueva iniciativa fue presentada – un registro para armas de crímenes, similar al que existe para los delincuentes sexuales. Insta a que los delincuentes mantengan récords al día de su residencia e información de empleo con la policía. Esta información pública estaría accesible ‘online’ y le permitiría a los residentes del Bronx a saber cuantos, si alguno de estos delincuentes están viviendo en nuestros vecindarios.
El presidente Diaz también habló acerca de las inversiones hechas en el Bronx. Entre ellas estaba la inminente llegada de FreshDirect, Smith Electric, Baco Enterprises, Fairway Bakery, Bronx Brewery; proyectos tales como las estaciones del Metro-North en Hunts Point, Parkchester/Van Nest, Morris Park y Co-op City; la construcción del Hotel Marriot; la torre de oficinas del Centro Médico Montefiore en el Centro Hutchinson Metro; y solo un poco más al norte, se está construyendo el primer centro comercial interior en Co-op City.
Todos estos proyectos impulsan nuestra economía y crean miles de empleos en el campo de la construcción y empleos permanentes en el cuidado de la salud, la industria de los hoteles y al detal. El Presidente del Condado se aseguró de señalar que su oficina está trabajando junto a estas compañías para asegurar que un porcentaje de esos empleos sean para los residentes del Bronx.
En cuanto a la educación, el presidente Díaz habló acerca de la falta de representación de los estudiantes del Bronx en Escuelas Superiores Especializadas. Un informe emitido el pasado mayo le pide al Departamento de Educación expandir la preparación de los exámenes a comunidades con desventajas y buscar métodos alternos de admisiones para Escuelas Superiores Especializadas.
Sabemos que el futuro de nuestro condado se encuentra en las manos de nuestros niños y la educación es la clave para su éxito. Estos recursos son bien necesitados en nuestro condado y Díaz y su oficina están a la vanguardia en la lucha por el mejoramiento del sistema de educación en lo que concierne al Bronx.
Todas son noticias emocionantes para el Bronx – el “Nuevo Bronx”.
Conozco muy bien las imágenes del Bronx en llamas, la epidemia de drogas y la violencia en las calles en los 70 y 80.
Hemos llegado lejos y continuamos trabajando bien duro para asegurar lo mejor para el Bronx.
El 2014 marca el aniversario 100 del condado del Bronx.
En los meses por venir, la oficina del Presidente del Condado anunciará la formación de diferentes comités responsables por las festividades del próximo año.
Esta columna, y este periódico, lo mantendrá informado de las diferentes festividades dentro nuestro condado para que pueda asistir y celebrar su historia, riqueza y progreso. Para concluir, señaló el presidente Díaz, “Tenemos que seguir adelante. Debemos de perseverar. Debemos de empujar hacia delante. Durante los próximos cuatro años vamos – juntos como “Un Bronx” – “Un Nuevo Bronx”, lograr un cambio significativo en nuestro condado”.
