The grieving families of NYPD officers Wenjian Liu and Rafael Ramos, who were killed in the line of duty on Sat., Dec. 20th when a gunman fired into their patrol car, have received a substantial holiday gift.
The Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation, a non-profit designed to help first responders and service members, has announced that it will be assuming all remaining mortgage payments on both of the homes of the fallen officers.
Foundation Chairman and CEO Frank Siller, who created the organization after his firefighter brother was killed on Sept. 11, 2001, said he was moved to help after hearing Governor Cuomo speak outside of Officer Liu’s home this past weekend.
“When my brother Stephen died on 9/11 along with 342 other firefighters, our family decided that the best way to honor his memory was by supporting first responders,” said Siller.
“This — and the fact that for the last several years, Tunnel to Towers has been building ‘smart homes’ for those catastrophically injured in war — makes it fitting that in recognition of the sacrifice of these fallen officers, we ensure that their family homes are financially secure.”
Donations directed solely to the families of Officers Liu and Ramos will be accepted on the website www.tunnel2towers.org starting on December 23.
Liu’s survivors include his wife of two months and his parents; Ramos is survived by his wife and two sons.
“In times of need and pain, the family of New York always comes together to support each other and following this senseless murder of two of New York’s finest, it is heartwarming and commendable for the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation to step in with such generosity,” said Governor Andrew M. Cuomo.
“In the darkest of times, the strength and spirit of community of New Yorkers shines the brightest,” he added. “During this holiday season, this act of generosity will ensure both the Ramos and Liu families no longer have to worry about how to cover the mortgage payments on their homes. By coming together, we help honor the memory of these fallen heroes.”
Since its inception, the Tunnel to Towers Foundation has provided millions of dollars for relief services and to rebuild homes following Hurricane Sandy, and also sponsors an annual charity run that draws 25,000 participants.

Las familias en duelo de los oficiales del NYPD Wenjian Liu y Rafael Ramos, quienes murieron en el cumplimiento de su deber el sábado 20 de diciembre, cuando un hombre armado disparó a su patrulla, han recibido un sustancial regalo de fiestas.
La fundación Tunnel to Towers Stephen Siller, una organización sin fines de lucro destinada a ayudar a los socorristas y miembros del servicio, anunciaron que asumirán los pagos remanentes de la hipoteca de las casas de los oficiales caídos.
El presidente y director general de la fundación, Frank Siller, quien creó la organización después de que su hermano bombero murió el 11 de septiembre de 2001, dijo que fue a ayudar después de escuchar al gobernador Cuomo hablar afuera de la casa del oficial de Liu.
“Cuando mi hermano Stephen murió el 11 de septiembre junto con otros 342 bomberos, nuestra familia decidió que la mejor manera de honrar su memoria era apoyando a los socorristas”, dijo Siller.
“Esto, y el hecho de que durante los últimos años Tunnel to Towers ha estado construyendo casas inteligentes para los catastróficamente heridos en la guerra, hace que sea apropiado que en reconocimiento del sacrificio de estos agentes caídos, nos aseguremos de que sus hogares estén financieramente seguros”.

A Liu le sobreviven su esposa de dos meses y sus padres; a Ramos le sobreviven su esposa y dos hijos.
