I Love the Bronx: Mulchfest

As part of our ongoing BFP series highlighting the various favorite spaces, things and people in our borough, we turn to Nilka Martell, who continues to explore her hometown.
“I am a Bronx native, daughter, sister, mother of three beautiful Bronx babies, photographer, writer and motivator,” says Martell, of Puerto Rican descent.
A paralegal for over 17 years until December 2010, she has since been dedicating her time to exploring the Bronx.
Her energy and enthusiasm are indefatigable, and admirable.
“I want to make my fellow residents aware and informed of how lovely our borough is, what it offers, and how to lend a helping hand in our environment.”
Of this new time in her life, Martell says, “I have never felt so alive.”

Just in time to make all good things fresh and new, the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation, the New York City Department of Sanitation, and GreeNYC are currently organizing the annual MulchFest event.
From now through Sunday, January 12, drop off your natural holiday tree at any of the following sites:

- EchoPark (Tremont and Valentine Avenues)
- Fort #4 Playground (Reservoir and Webb Avenues)

- HaffenPark (Hammersley and Wickham Avenues)
- Kossuth Playground (Mosholu Parkway North and Kossuth Avenue)
- Little GreenGarden (East 161st Street at Melrose and Courtland Avenues)
- PadrePlaza⁄SuccessGarden (East 139th Street and St. Ann’s Avenue)
- PelhamBayPark (parking lot: Middletown Road and Stadium Avenue)

At MulchFest, the celebratory trees will be broken down into wood chips. The chips, or mulch, will be used to nourish plantings and trees through New York City – a perfect way to start off the year.
Some sites are also designated “chipping sites”.
At these locations, you can take home your very own bag of mulch. You can use it in your garden, or maybe a street tree. The mulch is distributed in biodegradable bags.
Chipping sites will only be opened on Saturday, January 11 and Sunday, January 12 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.
Here are a few such sites:
- Brook Park (Brook Ave and East 141st St)
- Co-OpCity (Co-Op Blvd & Bellamy Loop)
- Metropolitan Oval in Parkchester (Metropolitan Avenue and Unionport Road)
- SoundviewPark (Story and Morrison Avenues)
- Van Cortlandt Park (Golf Course at Bailey Avenue and Van Cortlandt Park South)
Last year, 26,000 trees were collected citywide.
Whether you dropped off your tree last year to be mulched or will be doing so for the first time this year, you can make a difference at the top of 2014.
Please consider dropping off your tree at a MulchFest site so that, together, we can exceed last year’s collection.

“Soy una nativa del Bronx, hija, hermana, madre de tres hermosos bebés Bronx, fotógrafa, escritora y motivadora”, dice Martell, de ascendencia puertorriqueña.
Asistente legal durante más de 17 años, hasta diciembre de 2010, desde entonces ha dedicado su tiempo a explorar el Bronx. Su energía y entusiasmo son infatigables y admirables. “Quiero que mis compañeros residentes sean conscientes y estén informados de qué tan hermoso es nuestro vecindario, lo que ofrece y cómo prestar ayuda a nuestro medio ambiente”.
De esta nueva etapa en su vida, Martell dice: “¡Nunca me he sentido tan viva!”

Justo a tiempo, el Departamento de Parques y Recreos de la ciudad de Nueva York, el Departamento de Sanidad de la ciudad de Nueva York y GreeNYC actualmente están organizando el evento anual ‘MulchFest’.
Desde ahora hasta el domingo 12 de enero, lleve su árbol de navidad a cualquiera de los siguientes lugares:

Los árboles van a ser cortados en astillas de madera. Las astillas serán utilizadas para alimentar las plantas y árboles a lo largo de la ciudad de Nueva York. Esta es una manera perfecta de comenzar el año.
Algunos lugares están diseñados como “lugares de astillas”. En estos lugares usted puede llevarse a casa su propia funda de astillas. La puede utilizar en su jardín, o quizás en un árbol en la calle. Las astillas son distribuidas en fundas biodegradables.
Los lugares solo estarán abiertos el sábado, 11 de enero y el domingo, 12 de enero de 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.

El año pasado se recogieron 26,000 árboles.
Ya sea que el año pasado llevó su árbol para hacerlo astillas o lo estaría haciendo este año por primera vez, usted puede hacer una diferencia a principios del 2014.
Por favor considere llevar su árbol al MulchFest y vamos a exceder la recolección del año pasado.
