200 letters, 40 days, 1 premiere

On Wed., Jun. 12th, Miss Universe came uptown.
Dayanara Torres, crowned Miss Universe in 1993, strode into the premiere of her new movie, 200 Cartas (200 Letters).
The former beauty queen looked stunning in a strapless Gustavo Cadile gown that swirled elegantly at her feet.
She was not alone.
At the premiere too were fellow actors Monica Steuer, Mayra Matos Pérez, Luis Raúl and Iris Chacón, and writer-director Bruno Irizarry.
And making his big-screen debut as lead actor was uptown hometown hero, Lin-Manuel Miranda.
In light of the uptown connection, the film’s premiere, sponsored in part by The Bronx Free Press and sister publication The Manhattan Times, was screened at the United Palace Theatre.
Many uptown residents already know that it is the perfect place for a Hollywood debut, but Thursday’s screening let others, including Torres, in on the secret.
“I had heard really good things about it,” she said, in a private interview with The Bronx Free Press. “I’m so glad to have the opportunity to do something outside the box.”
Her role in the movie spoke to new terrain as well for the actress.
In 200 Cartas, Torres plays a handywoman of sorts.
In one scene, she manhandles a sandblaster, and in another, she is a tour guide/getaway driver.
While Torres has tackled a number of roles in several Filipino films and television shows, those were two roles she had never played before.
“It was a lot of fun,” she said.
The filming of 200 Cartas was fun for many involved in the cast.
“I had the easiest job in the world,” said Miranda as he addressed the packed theater ahead of the screening, “being friends with Jaime Camil, and falling in love with Dayanara Torres.”
Though all was not fun and games.
Miranda’s fans sighed sympathetically when he told them of his episode with dengue fever during filming.
Miranda plays the role of Raúl, a struggling cartoonist and graphic artist, who daylights as an accountant. One night, Raúl meets María Sánchez, a young Puerto Rican woman visiting New York; he is smitten. But the night of their encounter, they are suddenly separated. Struck by love at first sight, he travels to Puerto Rico in search of María, on a quest that has him traveling the island. It is the land of Raúl’s heritage, and his search also becomes an exploration of Puerto Rico.
Aside from dishing out abundant amounts of slapstick humor, 200 Cartas offers a display of the country’s wonders.
“The movie became a tribute,” explained Torres. “I saw places I had never seen before. It was such a joy. I got to meet Puerto Rico and fall in love even more.”
The movie’s first-time viewers agreed.
“I feel like I visited Puerto Rico,” said one audience member during a question and answer session after the screening.
Jonah Sotomayor has been to many places in Puerto Rico, including Humacao, where his half-sister got married.
“It was so much fun, the fact that I recognized a lot of things.”
The splendor of the United Palace was also noted.
“It’s beautiful. It’s perfect to start screening movies,” said Linda Nieves-Powell, who came from Staten Island to see the premiere after finding out about it on Facebook.
“It’s got great acoustics,” commented Leticia Vita.
Efforts are underway to revive the theater as a destination for film and projection projects.
Before the movie, Mike Fitelson, program director of the United Palace of Cultural Arts (UPCA), spoke of the initiative to return film to the Palace with an Indiegogo campaign in June to raise $40,000 in 40 days.
The campaign will raise money to purchase a projection system, clean the screen, and cover programming costs for several screenings.
Rather than trying to create a first-run movie theatre, the goal is to set up the Palace to be able to regularly show specialty films, videos, live to projection events, and digitally projected media.
Fitelson estimated that at 60 percent of the audience at the premiere visited the theater for the first time.
“That shows us that there is a market for these types of event films that we need to tap into to make the Palace a viable venue,” he said to The Bronx Free Press.
“I hope this is one of many premieres [here]. I don’t think anyone can do this like we do.”
“It was a dream come true to have this premiere here,” agreed Miranda.

El miércoles 12 de junio, Miss Universo llegó a los Heights.
Dayanara Torres, coronada Miss Universo en 1993, irrumpió en el estreno de su nueva película, 200 Cartas (200 Letters).
La ex reina de belleza se veía espectacular en un vestido strapless de Gustavo Cadile que se arremolinaba con elegancia a sus pies.
No estaba sola.
En el estreno también estaban sus compañeros actores Monica Steuer, Mayra Matos Pérez, Luis Raúl e Iris Chacón, y el director y guionista Bruno Irizarry.
Y haciendo su debut en un papelar estelar en la pantalla grande estaba el héroe local, Lin-Manuel Miranda.
A la luz de la conexión del norte del condado, el estreno de la película, auspiciado en parte por The Bronx Free Press y The Manhattan Times, se proyectó en el United Palace Theatre.
Los habitantes locales ya saben que es el lugar perfecto para un estreno de Hollywood, pero la proyección del jueves difundió este secreto, incluyendo a Torres.
“He oído cosas muy buenas”, dijo Torres en una entrevista privada con The Bronx Free Press. “Estoy muy contenta de tener la oportunidad de hacer algo fuera de lo común”.
Su papel en la película hablaba de un nuevo terreno, también para la actriz.
En 200 Cartas, Torres interpreta a una mujer que hace todo tipo de cosas.
En una escena, estropea un limpiador a chorro de arena, y en otra, es una guía/conductora de escapadas turísticas.
Aunque Torres ha abordado una serie de papeles en varias películas y programas de televisión filipina, éstos son dos que nunca había interpretado antes.
“Fue muy divertido”, dijo.
La filmación de200 Cartas fue divertida para muchos de los involucrados en el elenco.
“Yo tuve el trabajo más fácil del mundo”, dijo Miranda mientras se dirigía a la sala llena antes de la proyección, “ser amigo de Jaime Camil y enamorarme de Dayanara Torres”.
Aunque no todo fue diversión y juegos.
Los fans de Miranda suspiraron con simpatía cuando les dijo de su episodio con la fiebre del dengue durante la filmación.
Miranda interpreta el papel de Raúl, un dibujante y artista gráfico en aprietos, quién durante el día es contador. Una noche, Raúl se reúne con María Sánchez, una joven puertorriqueña que visita Nueva York, él se enamora. Pero durante la noche de su encuentro, de repente se separan. Golpeado por el amor a primera vista, viaja a Puerto Rico en busca de María, en una búsqueda que lo hace viajar a la isla. Es la tierra de la herencia de Raúl y su búsqueda se convierte también en una exploración del país.
Aparte de repartir abundantes cantidades de humor simple, 200 Cartas ofrece un espectáculo de las maravillas del país.
“La película se convirtió en un homenaje”, explicó Torres. “Vi lugares que nunca había visto antes. Fue una gran alegría. Pude conocer Puerto Rico y enamorarme aún más”.
Los que vieron la película por primera vez estuvieron de acuerdo.
“Siento que he visitado Puerto Rico”, dijo un miembro de la audiencia durante una sesión de preguntas y respuestas después de la proyección.
Jonah Sotomayor ha estado en muchos lugares en Puerto Rico, incluyendo Humacao, donde su media hermana se casó.
“Fue muy divertido reconocer muchas cosas”.
También se destacó el esplendor del United Palace.
“Es hermoso. Es perfecto para empezar a proyectar películas”, dijo Linda Nieves-Powell, que vino de Staten Island para ver el estreno después de enterarse en Facebook.
“Tiene una gran acústica”, comentó Leticia Vita, residente de Harlem.
Se están realizando esfuerzos para revivir el teatro como un lugar para proyectos de cine y proyección.
