A native son, struck by stars

“They say that people from the Bronx are creators. I feel that is so.”
It would be hard to argue the case against Darrin Henson, who has remained an enduring figure in film and television since his breakout role as Lem Van Adams on the Showtime series Soul Food, the longest-running drama with a predominantly African American cast in television history.
2015 will be no different for the talented actor, dancer and choreographer, as he is involved in numerous upcoming projects.
He is also a published author, with his second book Ain’t That the Truth out now.
Henson credits his time in his hometown for spurring him forward.
“Everything was visualized when I was still living in the Bronx.”
Henson recently spoke about his role in the upcoming film Chocolate City.
“I play Magnus, one of the dancers in the club,” he explained. “He has actually been in the club for a while, and there is some difficulty with new blood. There’s some tension
with the changing of the guard.”
Chocolate City also stars Vivica A. Fox, Carmen Electra, Michael Jai White, Robert Ri’chard, Tyson Beckford, and Ginuwine.
He will also star in the film The Choir Director, based on the book of the same title written by Carl Weber.
Henson says it “is a family film that will feature some of the things that go on behind the scenes in church.”
Another film slated for 2015 is Sons 2 the Grave, which focuses around “an inner city young man who is very, very talented and plays basketball,” notes the actor.
The film features “some of the life experiences that go along with being a talented young man but not having the financial resources. [This] puts him in a compromising position.”
Henson portrays a detective in the film, one who has to deal with some unfortunate situations.
“It is really about cause and effect and the choices that we make.”
Henson noted that the characters were realistic depictions that would resonate with audiences.
“They could be our brothers, uncles, sisters.”
The bent towards authenticity is evident not only in his work; it is rooted also in the recollections he holds dear of his native borough.
“Zulu Anniversary jams,” is his first answer as he lists important memories from his childhood. “Seeing the premiere of graffiti artists’ works [and] learning how to dance on fridge boxes.”
There was also inspiration to be mined.
“Just the love that people had for the culture then,” said Henson of that which served to motivate his creativity. “[I had the sense] that opportunity that would unfold for me.”
Henson seeks, in turn, to inspire. He will be hosting Candle in the Dark, the signature fundraiser for Morehouse College, the historically black college attended by scores of legendary African-American men, including the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
“I was thankful and honored to be called back to Morehouse College.
This will be the second time I will be speaking [there]. To be invited back for the second time is wonderful.”
The time spent with the young male students fuels him, he said.
“It’s always insightful and informative,” he remarked. “[They] are working to expand the consciousness of young black men in America.”
Henson is known for maintaining in peak physical condition – as evidenced by his fitness videos and his stints as a dancer and choreographer.
It is no easy task.
“I run about five miles a day. I box, I lift weights, and I try to eat right.”
That commitment is part of a larger philosophy.
“If you take care of the body temple, the body temple takes care of you,” he advises.
As a dancer/choreographer, he worked with some of the biggest names in the industry, including Britney Spears and N’SYNC with Justin Timberlake.
His love for the form endures.
“I still teach dance classes, I dance all the time. It is still a very strong and passionate love for me.”
And Henson promises he’ll keep others on their feet – just to keep up with him, on and off screen.
“I always afford myself the opportunity to keep moving.”

“Realmente trata sobre causas y efectos y las decisiones que tomamos”.
Henson señaló que los personajes son representaciones realistas que resonarán en el público.
“Podrían ser nuestros hermanos, tíos, hermanas”.
La inclinación hacia la autenticidad es evidente no sólo en su trabajo, también tiene sus raíces en los recuerdos de lo que ama de su condado natal.
“Las sesiones improvisadas de aniversario de Zulu”, es su primera respuesta mientras enumera los recuerdos importantes de su infancia.
“Ver el estreno de obras de artistas del grafiti [y] aprender a bailar en refrigeradores”.
Hubo también inspiración para ser explotada.
“Tan sólo el amor que la gente tenía por la cultura entonces”, dijo Henson de lo que le sirve para motivar su creatividad. “[Tuve la sensación de que] esa oportunidad se desarrollaría para mí”.
Henson busca, a su vez, inspirar. Será el anfitrión de Vela en la Oscuridad, la distintiva recaudación de fondos de Morehouse College, la universidad históricamente negra a la que asistieron decenas de legendarios hombres afroamericanos, entre ellos el fallecido Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
“Me siento agradecido y honrado de ser llamado de nuevo a Morehouse College. Esta será la segunda vez que voy a hablar [ahí]. Ser invitado nuevamente es maravilloso”.
El tiempo que pasa con los jóvenes estudiantes lo alimenta, dijo.
“Siempre es perspicaz e informativo”, remarcó. “[Ellos] están trabajando para ampliar la conciencia de los jóvenes negros en Estados Unidos”.
Henson es conocido por mantenerse en excelente estado físico, como lo demuestran sus videos de acondicionamiento físico y sus períodos como bailarín y coreógrafo.
No es una tarea fácil.
“Corro unas cinco millas al día. Practico box, levanto pesas y trato de comer bien”.
Es parte de una filosofía: “Si cuidas del templo del cuerpo, él cuidará de ti”.
Como bailarín/coreógrafo, trabajó con algunos de los grandes nombres de la industria, incluyendo a Britney Spears y N’SYNC con Justin Timberlake.
Su amor por la forma perdura.
“Todavía imparto clases de baile, bailo todo el tiempo. Es un amor muy fuerte y apasionado el que tengo”.
Y Henson promete que seguir esforzándose para que otros se mantengan al día con él, dentro y fuera de la pantalla.
“Siempre me doy la oportunidad de mantenerme en movimiento”.
