Q & A with MTA Train Operator Andre Morgan, Hostos ’11
This interview was conducted by Academic Program Coordinator Rocio Rayo and has been edited for length and clarity.
How have you been involved with the city’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic?
During the COVID-19 pandemic, I’ve been working as a frontline worker with MTA as a train operator. I drive the trains. I’m taking people from point to point in New York City making sure that the city is running. Essential workers are the main reason why the MTA remains open during the entire pandemic. And I’m one of the train operators who was transporting the nurses, the doctors, all the first responders.
A lot of things have changed. I’m one of the persons who contracted the COVID-19, but I’m one of the people who survived. Within our agency, we lost over 100 people, so now we’ve taken measures to protect our employees better.
How has your job or role during the crisis impacted you?
As I mentioned earlier, I’m one of the people who contracted the COVID-19, and thankfully I’m one who survived. That knowledge that I gained from my experience, I was able to share it with others who contracted the virus.
Unfortunately, quite a few of our staff members, our peers, our colleagues passed on, as a result of the COVID-19. And that has affected morale. It’s never easy to lose people.
What advice do you have for others entering your field?
Your safety is paramount. It’s important that you go home to your family. It’s important that you go home to your family being whole, not taking home this COVID-19 with you, because you don’t want to make them sick. You don’t want to make them worried. We were losing an average 800 people per day in New York City. But if we take the measures that the people in charge have suggested, we can really reduce the number of fatalities and the number of illnesses.
What is your message to Hostos graduates?
Congratulations, you’ve done it. College is by no means an easy task. But you stuck to it, you did it. I’m the first person from Hostos Community College to have been accepted into the New York Needs You Fellowship, and it makes me proud, to know that Hostos is still producing some of the brightest, most intelligent, and well-driven people that our society is desperately in need of right now.

¿Cómo ha estado involucrado con la respuesta de la ciudad a la pandemia de COVID-19?
Durante la pandemia de la COVID-19, he estado trabajando como trabajador de primera línea con la MTA como operador de trenes. Yo conduzco los trenes. Llevo gente de punto a punto en la ciudad de Nueva York para asegurarme de que la ciudad funcione. Los trabajadores esenciales son la razón principal por la cual la MTA permanece abierta durante toda la pandemia. Como mencioné anteriormente, soy una de las personas que contrajo la COVID-19, y afortunadamente soy uno de los que sobrevivió. Ese conocimiento que obtuve de mi experiencia, pude compartirlo con otras personas que contrajeron el virus. Desafortunadamente, muchos de nuestros miembros del personal, de nuestros compañeros, de nuestros colegas, fallecieron, como resultado de la COVID-19. Y eso ha afectado la moral. Nunca es fácil perder personas.
¿Qué consejo tienes para que otros entren en tu campo?
La seguridad es primordial. Es importante que vayan a casa con su familia. Es importante que vayan a casa con sufamilia completa, y no se lleven a casa esta COVID-19 contigo, porque no quieren enfermarlos. No quierenpreocuparlos. Estábamos perdiendo un promedio de 800 personas por día en la ciudad de Nueva York. Pero si tomamos las medidas que han sugerido los responsables, realmente podemos reducir la cantidad de muertes y la cantidad de enfermedades.
¿Cuál es su mensaje para los graduados de Hostos?
Felicidades, lo han logrado. La universidad no es una tarea fácil. Pero se aferraron a eso, lo hicieron. Soy la primera persona de Hostos Community College que ha sido aceptada en cómo becario en New York Needs You Fellowship, y me enorgullece saber que Hostos sigue produciendo a algunas de las personas más brillantes, inteligentes y motivadas que nuestro la sociedad necesita desesperadamente, ahora mismo.
