Latinas launch bilingual paralegal firm

A Bronx firm is looking to change the small business landscape for women-owned businesses in the city.
Paralegals for the Community, LLC was launched in September by three like-minded Latina women. The firm offers an array of bilingual services, including notary services, tax preparation, immigration assistance and uncontested divorces.
Founders Swannie Batista, Rachel Batista and Elaine Castillo said they were hoping to fill a niche by offering paralegal services tailored to Spanish-speaking and immigrant community members.
“When people think of legal matters, they’re intimidated, they’re overwhelmed,” remarked Swannie. “People come in here and feel comfortable. They can relate to us. We speak their language and we treat them like family.”
The Batista sisters are of Dominican heritage, while Castillo is Puerto Rican.
With an extensive background as paralegals, the women had long wanted to branch out into their own business, opening an office at 391 East 149th Street last fall.
“It’s a dream we’ve always had, it was simply a matter of taking that leap of faith that we could go out on our own,” Rachel said. “So far the most challenging thing has been letting people know we exist.”
The founders said much of their clientele has come from word-of-mouth referrals from satisfied customers.
More than half of their business is from clients who are predominantly Spanish speaking, Castillo said.
The founders are also positioning Paralegals for the Community to offer services directly to local attorneys. The firm can be hired by monthly contracts or on an hourly basis.
“Especially for a solo practitioner, who’s by themselves, we can save them some time and money,” said Swannie. “The same thing that an in-house paralegal would do, we do for them. We do court filings, trial prep, meeting with clients.”
One of the main functions of Paralegals for the Community is offering mobile notary services, serving all five boroughs and including as far as Connecticut.
“People might need notary services such as for power of attorney, but are homebound, and can’t get out,” said Castillo. “We can go to you, wherever that is — whether it’s a home, a hospital. We’ll make it work and try to help you.”
Though the women are not attorneys themselves, the firm is able to help clients complete paperwork for citizenship applications, or uncontested divorce filings. Castillo maintained that clients often pay attorneys exorbitant fees when using a lawyer is not needed.
“People think they need to spend all this money on lawyers when really they only need certain paperwork,” Castillo said. “That’s where we can help.”
Rachel said that clients have appreciated the firm’s up-front handling of fees.
“They appreciate the honesty. There are always hidden fees everywhere you go, but we tell them up front what the costs are and where they’re going,” she said.
Satisfied clients agree.

Sisters Swannie and Rachel said they were motivated by their late father, who was an entrepreneur.
“He inspired us to believe in ourselves and feel that we could run our own business. We thought, why not maximize the skills that we already possess,” remarked Swannie, who has worked in Bronx Housing Court and the U.S. Attorney’s Office, as well as in boutique and large agencies. “It’s really meaningful to us that we’re all Latinas and we’re running our own firm.”
Since opening the office, the women have attempted to give back to the community, sponsoring a toy drive with Children’s Hospital at Montefiore and at Lincoln Hospital and partnering with Hostos Community College on a scholarship for a female Bronx student enrolled in a paralegal.
In April, the firm plans to host a workshop for women who want to start their own business.
“We’re trying to inspire other women to not be afraid. Go out there and do this,” she said. “Don’t be afraid to start your own business and provide for your family.”

Más de la mitad de su negocio es de clientes que son predominantemente hispanohablantes, dijo Castillo. Las fundadoras también están posicionando a Paralegals for the Community para ofrecer servicios directamente a los abogados locales.
La firma puede ser contratada por convenios mensuales o por hora. “Especialmente para un profesional que está solo, podemos ahorrarles algo de tiempo y dinero”, dijo Swannie. “Lo mismo que haría un asistente legal interno, lo hacemos por ellos. Realizamos presentaciones judiciales, preparación de juicios, reuniones con clientes”. Una de las funciones principales de Paralegals for the Community es ofrecer servicios de notaría móviles, sirviendo a los cinco condados e incluso hasta Connecticut.
“La gente puede necesitar servicios notariales como un poder legal, pero están confinados en su hogar y no pueden salir”, dijo Castillo. “Podemos acudir a usted, dondequiera que esté, ya sea un hogar, un hospital. Si bien las mujeres no son abogadas, la firma puede ayudar a los clientes a completar el papeleo para las solicitudes de ciudadanía o solicitudes de divorcio de mutuo acuerdo.
Castillo sostuvo que los clientes a menudo pagan tarifas exorbitantes a los abogados cuando no necesitan uno. “La gente piensa que necesita gastar todo este dinero en abogados cuando realmente solo necesitan ciertos papeles”, dijo Castillo. “Ahí es donde podemos ayudar”.
Rachel dijo que los clientes han valorado el manejo inicial de las tarifas por parte de la empresa. “Agradecen la honestidad. Siempre hay tarifas ocultas donde quiera que vaya, pero les decimos por adelantado cuáles son los costos y hacia dónde van “, dijo.
Los clientes satisfechos están de acuerdo.

Desde que abrieron la oficina, las mujeres han intentado retribuir a la comunidad, organizando una colecta de juguetes con el Hospital Infantil Montefiore y el Hospital Lincoln y asociándose con Hostos Community College con una beca para una estudiante del Bronx inscrita como asistente legal. En abril, la firma planea organizar un taller para mujeres que quieran comenzar su propio negocio.
“Estamos tratando de inspirar a otras mujeres para que no tengan miedo. Para que salgan y lo logren”, dijo. “No tengan miedo de comenzar su propio negocio y mantener a su familia”.
