Survivors bond over beauty and business

Angela Henry knows domestic violence all too well.
She has had not one, but three, abusive partners. Although she is now free from those relationships, the pain has endured.
“I have been through domestic violence over and over,” said Henry. “I have been traumatized for a long time, since [I was] very young.”
She explained that she suffers from depression and relies on medication.
With one in four women reporting an incident of domestic violence in her lifetime, the Bronx resident’s story is a common one.
But recently, Henry sought relief of another sort, as she joined with other survivors, advocates and family and friends for a bit of pampering – and career development – at the Bronx County Building.

From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., over 200 women received free manicures, massages, haircuts, and facials.
The event, now in its 13th year, is held in October specifically to mark Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
“Women need to raise their self-esteem, to move forward,” said Charito Cisneros, President, CEO and Founder of the New York Hispanic Cosmetology and Beauty Chamber of Commerce. “We help them do it.”
At the event, the Borough President, Senator Jeff Klein, and Michelle Dolgow Cristofaro, the Executive Director of the Bronx Chamber of Commerce, also launched the second Bronx H.I.R.E. Survivor Program, which provides free job training and certifications for domestic violence victims.
The program is an extension of Bronx H.I.R.E., an acronym which stands for Help Identify Real Employment, which launched in July 2014 to combat unemployment in the borough.
Klein recognized that those in domestic violent crises are often financially dependent on their aggressors. Providing them with the tools to become independent, he said, was critical to ending the cycle of abuse.
“All too often, victims of domestic violence lack the financial independence to leave harmful, and sometimes life-threatening, relationships and start over for themselves and their children,” said Klein.
The Borough President said it was imperative that all residents be afforded opportunity.
“As we grow our borough’s economy, we must make sure we create jobs for everyone, including our most vulnerable populations,” he said. “The Bronx H.I.R.E. initiative provides necessary training and other resources to help victims of domestic violence find employment and take steps towards financial independence.”
This year, the Bronx H.I.R.E. Survivor Program will also provide a free five-month, 120-hour training course in childcare for survivors, and will assist with job placement upon completion. The Child Development Associate (CDA) course will be conducted by Childcare Support Services and the Children’s Corner Learning Center at the Hutch Metro Center.
It offers training in early childhood education, and can lead to nationally recognized credentials, said MaryBeth Abrams, of the Children’s Corner Learning Center.
“The class is helping women who have not had the same opportunities and can further or jump-start a career in the child care industry,” she said.
Abrams anticipated that there would be approximately a dozen participants to start.
Dolgow Cristofaro thanked Senator Klein for providing additional funding.
“Senator Klein’s grant allows us to assist domestic violence survivors in their return to the workforce and help them to achieve a life of self-sufficiency,” she said.
For Margarita, the free training offered by H.I.R.E. Survivor Program had helped put an end to the horrors of before.
“The program has opened so many new doors and given me the opportunity to create a stable, secure life for me and my family,” remarked the full-time accountant’s assistant.
She smiled as she reported that she was financially independent and is able to provide for herself and her children.
“I am proof that we can do it,” said Margarita.

Ángela Henry conoce muy bien la violencia doméstica.
Ella ha tenido no una, sino tres parejas abusivas. A pesar de que ahora está libre de esas relaciones, el dolor ha perdurado.
“He sufrido violencia doméstica y otra vez,” dijo Henry. “He estado traumatizada durante mucho tiempo, ya que era muy joven”.
Explicó que sufre de depresión y depende de sus medicamentos.
Con una de cada cuatro mujeres reportando un incidente de violencia doméstica en su vida, la historia de la residente del Bronx es común.
Sin embargo, recientemente, Henry buscó alivio de otro tipo, ya que se unió a otras sobrevivientes, a defensores, familiares y amigos para un poco de mimos -y desarrollo profesional- en el edificio del condado del Bronx.
El Spa DiVa anual del Bronx fue organizado por la oficina del presidente del condado del Bronx, Rubén Díaz Jr., en colaboración con la Cámara Hispana de Comercio de Belleza y Cosmetología de Nueva York.
De 11 am a 3 pm, más de 200 mujeres recibieron manicuras, masajes, cortes de pelo y tratamientos faciales gratuitos.
El evento, ahora en su 13º año, se celebra específicamente en octubre para conmemorar el Mes de Concientización de la Violencia Doméstica.

En el evento, el presidente del condado, el senador Jeff Klein y Michelle Dolgow Cristofaro, directora ejecutiva de la Cámara de Comercio del Bronx, también lanzaron el segundo Programa de Sobrevivientes de Bronx H.I.R.E., que ofrece capacitación laboral y certificaciones gratuitas a las víctimas de violencia doméstica.
El programa es una extensión de Bronx H.I.R.E., acrónimo en inglés que significa (en español) Ayuda para Identificar Empleos Reales, el cual fue puesto en marcha en julio de 2014 para combatir el desempleo en la ciudad.
Klein reconoció que las víctimas de las crisis de violencia doméstica a menudo dependen económicamente de sus agresores. El proporcionarles las herramientas necesarias para ser independientes, dijo, es fundamental para poner fin al ciclo de abuso.
“Con demasiada frecuencia las víctimas de la violencia doméstica carecen de independencia financiera para abandonar relaciones perjudiciales, y a veces mortales, y empezar de nuevo por ellas mismas y sus hijos”, dijo Klein.
El presidente del condado dijo que es imperativo que todos los residentes reciban una oportunidad.
“Conforme con el crecimiento de la economía de nuestro condado debemos asegurarnos de crear puestos de trabajo para todos, incluyendo nuestras poblaciones más vulnerables”, dijo. “La iniciativa Bronx H.I.R.E. provee la capacitación necesaria y otros recursos para ayudar a las víctimas de violencia doméstica a encontrar empleo y dar pasos hacia la independencia financiera “.
Este año, el Programa de Sobrevivientes de Bronx H.I.R.E. también proporcionará un curso gratuito de formación de 120 horas en un período de cinco meses sobre el cuidado de los niños para las sobrevivientes, y ayudará con colocación de empleo al finalizar. El curso de Asociado en Desarrollo Infantil (CDA por sus siglas en inglés) estará a cargo de Servicios de Apoyo de guardería y el Centro de Aprendizaje Children’s Corner en el Hutch Metro Center.
Ofrece capacitación en educación infantil y puede llevar a credenciales reconocidas a nivel nacional, dijo MaryBeth Abrams, del Centro de Aprendizaje Children’s Corner.
“La clase está ayudando a las mujeres que no han tenido las mismas oportunidades y pueden impulsar o poner en marcha una carrera en la industria del cuidado de los niños”, dijo.
Abrams anticipó que habría aproximadamente una docena de participantes para iniciar.
Dolgow Cristofaro agradeció al senador Klein por proporcionar financiamiento adicional.
“El subsidio del senador Klein nos permite ayudar a las sobrevivientes de violencia doméstica en su regreso a la fuerza de trabajo y también a lograr una vida de autosuficiencia”, dijo.
A Margarita, la capacitación gratuita ofrecida por el Programa de Sobrevivientes de Bronx H.I.R.E. le ha ayudado a poner fin a los horrores de antes.
“El programa me ha abierto muchas puertas y también me ha dado la oportunidad de crear una vida estable y segura para mí y mi familia”, comentó la asistente de contador de tiempo completo.
Sonrió al informar que es financieramente independiente y capaz de proveer para ella y sus hijos.
“Yo soy la prueba de que podemos hacerlo”, dijo Margarita.
