Mr. Espaillat is going to Washington. It appears that Adriano Espaillat achieved victory late Tuesday night in another hotly contested race to represent New York’s 13th Congressional District, which spans Northern Manhattan and parts of the Bronx. Espaillat led challenger Keith Wright by about 1,200 votes in a bid to fill the spot being vacated by a retiring Charles Rangel, who held the seat for 46 years. If the results hold, Espaillat would become the first Dominican-born member to serve in Congress. Espaillat, who narrowly lost campaigns to Rangel in 2012 and 2014, seems to have succeeded on his third try. As of 12:30 a.m. Wednesday morning, with 491 of 496 precincts reporting, Espaillat had received 36.65 percent of the vote, as Wright received 33.77 percent, according to unofficial Board of Election (BOE) results. That did not keep Espaillat from declaring victory slightly after 11:00 p.m. at an election night party at 809 Bar & Grill in Inwood, his home neighborhood. “Tonight, the 13th Congressional District made history,” said Espaillat, who made reference to his heritage in his remarks and expressed his appreciation for the support he’d received from across the district. “Voters from throughout the 13th Congressional District elected a country boy from Santiago de los Caballeros in the Dominican Republic to be the nominee of the Democratic Party,” he remarked. “So from Harlem to East Harlem, from Washington Heights, from Inwood to the Northwest Bronx, I want to thank all the voters that cast their votes in support of this historic candidacy.” But in Harlem, at a watch party attended by Rangel, former Mayor David Dinkins and Congressman Gregory Meeks, among other supporters, Wright struck a defiant tone, refusing to concede the race until all of the paper ballots were tallied, as was necessary in the district’s 2012 race. “This campaign ain’t over,” insisted Wright at the Minisink Townhouse. “No candidate can declare victory tonight, not until every vote is counted.” The evening marked the beginning of the end to a bitter campaign, which frequently saw Espaillat and Wright trading verbal jabs, and featured accusations of voter suppression by Wright’s camp. It was also a crowded field, with nine candidates on the ballot, including another Dominican-American, Guillermo Linares, who secured around five percent of the vote. Former Obama Administration advisor Clyde Williams, like Wright a Harlem resident, finished with more than 10 percent of the vote, worrying Wright supporters that Williams’ presence in the race split the vote in the black community. While declaring his win, Espaillat reiterated his opponent’s call for a thorough vote count. “We will count every single vote,” he said. “Every vote must be respected.”
