“I’ve never seen anything like this since I’ve been here,” said Francis Price as she gazed awestruck at the damage caused by a six-alarm fire on Valentine Avenue and East 180th Street. Price is a 12-year resident of the block that was torn apart by the fire, which broke out in 2086 Valentine Avenue just before 11:45 p.m. on December 10 and quickly spread to several neighboring buildings. Firefighters needed more than three hours to control the fire, which displaced 93 people from their homes, including 14 children. Price said she had returned home late Thursday evening and had been unaware of the fire until a friend called to inquire about her safety. “My friends called and asked me if I was OK and I told them I was fine,” said Price. “I went outside and I didn’t know anything about this. I’m glad no one passed away or anything.” Three residents and six firefighters were treated for minor injuries. The Fire Department is investigating the cause of the blaze. The city’s Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD) is coordinating with the American Red Cross to arrange temporary housing for families displaced by the fire. So far, 61 individuals have been registered for shelter, said an HPD spokesperson. Local resident Tawana Tarboro said she saw the fire when it first started. The HPD spokesperson indicated that two properties have been marked for city demolition due to the extent of damage to the structural integrity of the building, and three owners of the neighboring buildings affected by the fire have opted to demolish their properties under the supervision of DOB. HPD will revisit those properties to perform any actions necessary to secure the buildings. “I came out of my house around 11:30 p.m. last night and I was out there until 1:30 a.m. in the morning,” Tarboro said. “The fire just kept going, it wouldn’t go out. It was terrible.”
At nearby St. Simon Stock Catholic Church, staff members sought to assist displaced residents with food and clothing, and even temporary shelter, though no parishioners were directly impacted by the blaze.
