$2.4 million MRI equipment comes to Lincoln

State-of-the-art magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technology is coming to NYC Health + Hospitals/Lincoln.
A 3T MRI scanner, which produces more detailed images and improves the patient experience, will be installed at Lincoln – which is a Level 1 trauma center – by 2020.
“As a tertiary hospital, it’s incredibly important that we have the latest technology available to our patients,” said Milton Núñez, Chief Executive Officer at NYC Health + Hospitals/Lincoln. “Whether it’s the trauma patient or the patient with chronic disease, we have to be prepared to deal with all of those things when they walk through our doors.”
The new machine will replace an aging one that is nearing the end of if its lifespan, Núñez said.
“This is the latest technology, and when you consider that Lincoln Hospital is not only a Level 1 trauma center, but one of the busiest emergency departments in the entire country, this technology is really essential for the patients that we serve,” said William Foley, Senior Vice President for Acute Care Operations for NYC Health + Hospitals.

The upgrade was made possible by an allocation of $2.4 million from the New York State Assembly, an effort spearheaded by local Assemblymember Carmen Arroyo.
For Arroyo, helping Lincoln was a matter of personal significance.
“This hospital has saved my life six times already,” she remarked at a press conference at Lincoln to announce the funding. “The next person in that MRI could be me. It could be my son, it could be my granddaughter.”
She said that Lincoln officials appealed to her more than a year ago for assistance in upgrading outdated equipment. Though she intended to help, she explained that Lincoln initially would not have been eligible for funds, due to a regulation in Albany preventing the state from providing money to city hospitals.
“It took us about six months to change the regulation,” she said. “Now, any hospital can apply to the state for funds.”
State Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie said he found it to be an essential undertaking to alter guidelines to allow easier funding for hospitals.
“We believe that healthcare is a right, and not a privilege, and in order for that to happen, the healthcare facilities need to be equipped,” he stated.

Capable of faster and more sophisticated scans, the equipment coming to Lincoln operates at a power of 3 Teslas, which is the unit of measurement used to quantify the strength of the magnetic field in an MRI machine. A 3T machine functions at twice the strength of most MRI machines, which operate at 1.5T.
The new machine also has a larger patient space, reducing the feeling of claustrophobia many MRI patients feel, and faster scans reduce the need for long breath holds between sequences.
“The new 3T technology allows our providers and our technologists to work faster, and it’s a lot more energy efficient,” Núñez said. “We’ll see more patients in the same amount of time.”

La tecnología más moderna de resonancia magnética (MRI, por sus siglas en inglés) llegará a NYC Health + Hospitals/Lincoln en el Bronx.
Para 2020, se instalará en Lincoln, un centro de traumatismo de nivel 1, un escáner de resonancia magnética 3T, que produce imágenes más detalladas y mejora la experiencia del paciente.
“Como hospital terciario, es increíblemente importante que tengamos la última tecnología disponible para nuestros pacientes”, dijo Milton Núñez, director ejecutivo de NYC Health + Hospitals/Lincoln. “Ya sea que se trate del paciente de traumatismo o con una enfermedad crónica, debemos estar preparados para enfrentarnos a todas esas cosas cuando atraviesan nuestras puertas”.

Capaz de realizar análisis más rápidos y sofisticados, el equipo que llega a Lincoln opera a una potencia de 3 Teslas, que es la unidad de medida utilizada para cuantificar la intensidad del campo magnético en una máquina de MRI. Una máquina 3T funciona al doble de la fuerza de la mayoría de las máquinas MRI, que operan a 1.5T.
La nueva máquina también tiene un espacio más grande para el paciente, reduciendo la sensación de claustrofobia que tienen muchos pacientes con la MRI, y la rapidez de los análisis reducen la necesidad de respiraciones prolongadas entre las secuencias.
“La nueva tecnología 3T permite que nuestros proveedores y técnicos trabajen más rápido, y es mucho más eficiente en el consumo de energía”, dijo Núñez. “Veremos a más pacientes en la misma cantidad de tiempo”.
