“To pray with you is a joy”
Archbishop Dolan visits care facility residents

“Peace to all in the house!” exclaimed New York Archbishop Cardinal Timothy Dolan.
He issued his greetings on Wed., Dec. 10th as he arrived at the San Vicente de Paúl Catholic Health Care Center on Intervale Avenue.
He had come to celebrate Mass and to spend time with the residents of the assisted living facility, which had been created by the Archdiocese after Hurricane Sandy. The center’s residents were evacuated from their Queens home and took refuge in a Brooklyn shelter in the storm’s aftermath.
As he made his way inside the center, Cardinal Dolan shook hands and embraced all within reach.
“It is an honor for me to be here,” said the Archbishop, who had also visited the center in 2012. “To pray with you is a joy.”
When the 59 evacuees, many of whom suffer from physical disability and mental problems, became homeless, the State of New York granted the Archdiocese’s healthcare system, ArchCare, an emergency license to provide a temporary home on an empty floor of the Sant Vicente de Paúl Catholic Healthcare Center.
“[Originally] we could only take 40 residents,” said Scott LaRue, President and CEO of ArchCare.
But, in the end, they were able “to make room so all 59 people could be accommodated.”
“ArchCare has a history of stepping in and finding solutions for people who need care,” explained Jon Goldberg, a spokesman for the organization.
During Mass, Dolan also praised ArchCare for its work to help those in need.
“When people want to come here, ArchCare says ‘Come to me’,” he said. “We are very proud of ArchCare.”
The Archbishop noted that calamities bring people together, and Hurricane Sandy was no exception.
After the storm, he said, “Everybody was working together.”
ArchCare sought to make full renovations on both the fifth and sixth floors of the center once the permanent license was secured, in order to more fully accommodate its new residents.
“When we welcomed this wonderful people, we thought it was just an emergency. This is their home now,” said the Archbishop. “And we all want to be home for Christmas.”
The visit was a joyous occasion for residents, staff and administrators, who sought turns to shake hands with the Archbishop and say hello.
“It is a blessing to have Cardinal Dolan here today,” said Father José Ríos, who has been at the center for the past fourteen years.
Just after Mass, all gathered on the fifth floor Recreation Room for a small reception.
“They are very nice here,” reported resident Hilda Samboy, who spends much of her time crafting jewelry, including necklaces and bracelets. She said she would be celebrating Christmas at the center, as she had for the past two years. Beside her was her roommate, Norman Johnsto, who Samboy said was more than just a friend.
“He is like my boyfriend,” she said with a smile.
Another resident planning to spend the holidays at the center was Carmen Torres.
She enjoys playing bingo, reading the Bible and watching television.
Though her favorite thing in the world to do, she confessed, consisted of far less vigorous activity.
“My routine is to sleep,” she said.
As he prepared to leave, the Archbishop reported that he too was looking forward to the holidays – and that his wishes for the season, just as had been the case for many residents two years ago, had to do with rebuilding, and the concept of home.
“I want to be closer to Jesus and to bring my people closer to Jesus,” he said.
He then added, “And to complete Saint Patrick’s Cathedral.”
The Cathedral, which also serves as the Archbishop’s residence, is undergoing a $175 million dollar restoration.

“¡Paz a todos los presentes!”, exclamó el arzobispo de Nueva York, el cardenal Timothy Dolan.
Emitió sus saludos el miércoles 10 de diciembre cuando llegó al Centro Católico de Salud San Vicente de Paúl en la avenida Intervale.
Fue a celebrar la misa y a pasar un rato con los residentes del centro de vivienda asistida, el cual fue creado por la arquidiócesis después del Huracán Sandy. Los residentes del centro fueron evacuados de sus hogares de Queens y se refugiaron en un albergue de Brooklyn durante las secuelas de la tormenta.
Mientras se abría paso dentro del centro, el cardenal Dolan saludó y abrazó a todos los que estaban a su alcance.
“Es un honor para mí estar aquí”, dijo el arzobispo, quien también visitó el centro en 2012. “Orar con ustedes es una alegría”.
Cuando los 59 evacuados, muchos de los cuales sufren de discapacidad física y problemas mentales, se quedaron sin hogar, el estado de Nueva York le concedió al sistema de salud de la arquidiócesis, ArchCare, una licencia de emergencia para proporcionarles un hogar temporal en un piso vacío del Centro Católico de Salud San Vicente de Paúl.
“[Originalmente] sólo podría recibir 40 residentes”, dijo Scott LaRue, presidente y director general de ArchCare.
Pero, al final, fueron capaces de “hacer espacio para que las 59 personas pudieran ser acomodadas”.
“ArchCare tiene una historia de intervenir y encontrar soluciones para las personas que necesitan atención”, explicó Jon Goldberg, portavoz de la organización.
Durante la misa, Dolan también elogió a ArchCare por su trabajo para ayudar a los necesitados.
“Cuando la gente quiere venir aquí, ArchCare dice: ven a mí”, comentó. “Estamos muy orgullosos de ArchCare”.
El arzobispo señaló que las calamidades unen a la gente, y el huracán Sandy no fue la excepción.
Después de la tormenta, “todos trabajaron juntos”, dijo.
ArchCare trató de hacer renovaciones completas en el quinto y sexto piso del centro una vez que la licencia permanente se aseguró, con la finalidad de dar cabida a los nuevos residentes.
“Cuando dimos la bienvenida a estas maravillosas personas, pensamos que era una emergencia. Esta es su casa ahora”, dijo el arzobispo. “Y todos queremos estar en casa para Navidad”.
La visita fue un motivo de alegría para los residentes, el personal y los administradores, quienes buscaron turnos para estrechar la mano del arzobispo y saludarlo.
“Es una bendición tener al cardenal Dolan aquí hoy”, dijo el padre José Ríos, quien ha estado en el centro durante los últimos catorce años.
Justo después de la misa todos se reunieron en la sala de recreación, ubicada en el quinto piso, para una pequeña recepción.
“Son muy amables aquí”, informó la residente Hilda Samboy, quien pasa gran parte de su tiempo elaborando joyas, incluyendo collares y pulseras. Dijo que celebrará la Navidad en el centro, como lo ha hecho los últimos dos años. A su lado estaba su compañero de cuarto, Norman Johnsto, de quien Samboy dijo es algo más que un amigo.
“Él es como mi novio”, explicó con una sonrisa.
Otra residente que planea pasar las fiestas en el centro es Carmen Torres.
A ella le gusta jugar bingo, leer la biblia y ver la televisión.
Aunque su actividad favorita en el mundo, confesó, es mucho menos vigorosa.
“Mi rutina es dormir”, dijo.
Mientras se preparaba para salir, el arzobispo informó que él también espera con ansias las fiestas, y que sus deseos para la temporada, tal y como había sido el caso de muchos residentes hace dos años, tienen que ver con la reconstrucción y el concepto de hogar.
“Quiero estar más cerca de Jesús y llevar a mi gente más cerca de él”, dijo.
Luego agregó: “Y completar la catedral de San Patricio”.
La catedral, que también sirve como residencia del arzobispo, está experimentando una restauración de $175 millones de dólares.
