A year of quick changes, history, and YES

What a year!

For me, the year that has just ended was defined by three significant achievements: the monumental work of bringing Hamilton to Puerto Rico while we continued our philanthropic work on the island; the historic triumph of Tish James as Attorney General of the State of New York; and a key family milestone we have all applauded and delighted in.

For me, the greatest happiness occurs when politics, my love of the arts, the family and my community work converge.

And this year everything happened simultaneously.

In my life, the sweetest triumphs are always my family’s achievements.

And certainly, the acceptance this year of my nephew Miguel to Skidmore College represents the pinnacle of our collective success. Miguel, step by step, has earned greater academic gains. He worked hard to maintain an average that would keep him in the highest ranks of his class. He worked just as hard prepping for the SAT. And he spent hours analyzing colleges. The rules were simple – it had to be a liberal arts college, had to be no more than three hours from home, and had to have fewer than 3,000 students. He soon decided that Skidmore was his first choice. And then we all added our two cents into the process – from Lin-Manuel’s letter describing Miguel’s personal progress to our compiling additional application materials. Just a couple of weeks ago, Miguel received the most original acceptance letter I’ve seen – a brochure embossed with a huge “YES.” We all shouted for joy, and within five seconds, the whole family was celebrating. It’s the way we work – joy and sorrow alike are shared.

Tish James’ historic election as State Attorney General too was a point of pride we shared with people throughout the state. During the primary, many in the business made a point of staying far away. The lack of courage of some was particularly impressive. Some newspapers, such as The New York Times, turned against our campaign because we had accepted the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo. And with a particularly cynical flourish, many of the same outlets supported Cuomo – but not Tish. Indeed, Tish accepted the endorsement of Cuomo, along with the support of many others. But now, the rest is history. With comfortable margins, we won the primary and the general election and Tish has begun her tenure as the State’s first African-American Attorney General. Tish’s campaign was the last of its kind for me –a local, New York-focused campaign that makes history and paves the way. From now on, I’m working with the Latino Victory Fund, chairing a national organization where I will focus on increasing Latino political power at the national level.

Of course, should a candidate come around that rouses the fighting spirit again in me, rest assured, the gloves will come back on.

This first column of 2019 I write from Puerto Rico.

I have visited the island last year more than 15 times this past year working to bring Hamilton here. It was my son Lin-Manuel’s dream from the moment Hamilton began to triumph. While María complicated that assignment, we have persevered.  We allocated $1 million dollars to repair the theater of the University of Puerto Rico (UPR), where Hamilton was originally slated to be staged. But security concerns forced us to move Hamilton to Bellas Artes at the last minute. It has been a whirlwind, and we are all here in Puerto Rico, making sure that Lin-Manuel’s dream becomes reality and that the whole family says “¡Presente!”

Among the Mirandas, the triumph of one of us is the triumph of all of us.

You never know what a new year holds. The very best plans can be washed away, as happened to us at when Hamilton suddenly needed to change venues at the close of the year. A year of planning vanished in a flash. But we’ve rallied and switched gears. Once committed, we work as hard as our minds and our hearts will allow to reach our goals.

It is what we do, and who we are.

So, in January’s first days, I am spending my time here on the island tending to all things Hamilton – while always keeping an eye on how we Mirandas will find new goals to set, what fresh paths we will forge, and how we will next break through.

Un año de cambios rápidos, historia y SÍ

¡Qué año!

Para mí, el año que acaba de terminar fue definido por tres logros significativos: el trabajo monumental de llevar a Hamilton a Puerto Rico mientras seguíamos nuestra labor filantrópica en la isla; el triunfo de Tish James como fiscal general del estado de Nueva York; y los logros familiares que todos disfrutamos y aplaudimos.

Para mí, la felicidad máxima ocurre cuando la política, mi amor por las artes, la familia y mi trabajo comunitario convergen.

Y este año todo ocurrió simultáneamente.

En mi vida los triunfos mayores siempre son los logros de la familia. Y sin duda la aceptación en el 2018 de mi sobrino Miguel a Skidmore College representa la cúspide de nuestros logros familiares. Miguel, poco a poco, fue ganando mayor desarrollo intelectual y académico. Trabajó fuerte para mantener un promedio que lo mantuviera en los altos honores de su clase. Trabajó para agilizar la toma del SAT. A empujones pasó tiempo analizando colegios. Las reglas eran simples – un colegio de artes liberales, a no más de tres horas de la casa, con menos de 3000 estudiantes. Luego de análisis, decidió que Skidmore era su colegio de aceptación primera. Todos pusimos nuestro granito de arena en el proceso – desde la carta de Lin-Manuel describiendo el progreso personal de Miguel hasta los ensayos y materiales que acompañaban la solicitud de admisión. Hace par de semanas, Miguel recibió la carta de aceptación más original que he visto – un folleto con un YES enorme. Todos gritamos de alegría y a los cinco segundos ya toda la familia estaba celebrando. Las alegrías como las tristezas hay que compartirlas con la familia porque sonrisas y lágrimas colectivas son las mejores.

El triunfo de Tish James fue nuestro orgullo compartido con los grupos minoritarios y toda persona del estado. Durante la primaria, algunos políticos que siempre quieren jugar todas las bases brillaron por su ausencia. La falta de valor de algunos es impresionante. Periódicos como el New York Times se nos viraron en contra porque aceptamos el apoyo del Gobernador Andrew Cuomo. Y con el cinismo político que caracteriza al mismo periódico, apoyaron a Cuomo pero no a Tish. Acertadamente Tish aceptó el apoyo del Gobernador Cuomo. El resto es historia. Ganamos cómodamente la primaria y la elección general. La campaña de Tish fue mi última de este tipo – una campaña histórica local que abre camino. De ahora en adelante trabajando con Latino Victory Fund, entidad nacional que presido, me enfocaré en aumentar el poder político latino a nivel nacional. Claro, si alguien viene por ahí que me emociona, me pongo los guantes de nuevo.

Esta primera columna del 2019 la escribo desde Puerto Rico.

Visité a la isla durante el año pasado más de 15 veces trabajando para traer Hamilton. Era el sueño de Lin-Manuel, mi hijo, desde que Hamilton comenzó a triunfar. María complicó el montaje de la obra. Le asignamos una partida de $1 millón para reparar el teatro de la Universidad de Puerto Rico (UPR). El teatro quedó de maravilla pero problemas de seguridad nos obligaron mover la obra a Bellas Artes en el último momento. Y aquí estamos en Puerto Rico, asegurándonos que el sueño de Lin-Manuel se convierta en realidad y que la familia entera diga presente. Entre los Mirandas, el triunfo de cualquiera de nosotros es el triunfo de todos.

Uno nunca sabe lo que este nuevo año nos depara. Los mejores planes pueden aguarse.  Así nos pasó al fin de año cuando Hamilton tuvo que cambiar de lugar – un año de planificación se esfumó en un santiamén.

Pero lo importante es pensar en alternativas, y trabajar tan fuerte como nuestras mentes y nuestros corazones nos lo permitan para llegar a la meta.

Ahora en enero, me la paso en la isla atendiendo los pormenores de Hamilton.

Pero siempre con un ojo en que los Mirandas sigan trabajando fuerte, trazándose metas y abriendo camino.
