Local elected officials are seeking to ensure that the commercial corridors and neighborhoods within Kingsbridge, which has seen a recent influx of economic development, are maintained, beautified and improved.
This past Wed., Sept. 2nd, elected officials and community leaders presented the findings of a study on the Kingsbridge/Broadway retail corridor, which runs along Broadway between West 230th Street and West 238th Street, including connecting side streets.
The analysis was conducted by the Office of Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. jointly with Councilmember Andrew Cohen, Assemblymember Jeffrey Dinowitz, and the Bronx Overall Economic Development Corporation (BOEDC).
In addition to the numerous restaurants, supermarkets and clothing stores that line Broadway, two new malls, Broadway Plaza Retail Development and Riverdale Crossing, have opened in recent months. The centers have drawn various national retailers, including TJ Maxx, Sports Authority, Blink Fitness, Chipotle, Party City, BJ’s Wholesale Club and Buffalo Wild Wings, among others, to set up shop in the northwest Bronx.
“[This] corridor is seeing increased traffic from not just Bronx shoppers, but travelers from northern Manhattan and Westchester as well,” said Díaz.
The aim is to ensure that Kingsbridge, which has also maintained a relatively stable and affordable housing, remain a desirable place to live, to visit and to shop.
“We felt it was time to be proactive about what we feel should continue happening in this district,” said Díaz. “Kingsbridge is becoming a trendy neighborhood, not just in the Bronx, but in New York City.”
“Retail in Kingsbridge is thriving,” noted Sen. Jeff Klein, who represents the district and made note of the Revolving Loan Fund in support of local businesses for which he has allocated funding. “I’m proud to partner with the BOEDC on the Fund which allows businesses to borrow up to $50,000 to make capital improvements to their ventures. This is a great way, especially for mom and pop shops looking to revitalize their stores, to get a loan and take part in this Kingsbridge Renaissance.”
Leaders said that the economic development created momentum to spur further investment, and the focus was on continuing to improve the neighborhood – for residents, shoppers and business owners.
The study’s recommendations include graffiti removal; enhanced trash maintenance; increasing lighting; and expansion of parks and public spaces.
“There is still untapped potential to expand current businesses as well as attract new ones,” said BOEDC President Marlene Cintrón. “Enhancing the corridor will attract new and exciting businesses as well as encourage existing ones to continue to invest in their storefronts.”
“We want to make everything look as attractive as possible,” added Assemblymember Dinowitz. “It’s a great time to be in Kingsbridge.”
Other recommendations include adjusting parking meters to allow for longer parking interval times and targeted sanitation efforts for the cleanest sidewalks and most attractive landscapes possible.
“Kingsbridge is constantly improving,” said Senator Gustavo Rivera, who attended the press conference in support of the study. “We have to see how to ensure quality of places to live and stores for shopping.”
Developers and local business leaders alike said the efforts were welcome.
“All of the elected officials in the Kingsbridge/Broadway market understand the importance of job creation in their efforts to advance economic prosperity for the community and advanced planning for the future will maintain the Broadway corridor as an economic hub for years to come by attracting new businesses and new development,” said Joseph Farkas, President of Metropolitan Realty Associates, and developer of the Riverdale Crossing shopping center.
“We’ve had success bringing artists and fans to Kingsbridge for shows, but we can do better,” remarked Keith McDermott. He is the co-founder of the Bronx Backyard Monthly Music Series at Mr. McGoo’s Pub, which offers live music. “Parking is difficult, biking down Broadway is terrible and the MTA and DOT should work with Bronx artists so people traveling here know this is a place that appreciates creativity.”
The study will be presented to various agencies including the Department of Transportation (DOT), the Department of Sanitation (DSNY), and the Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) in order to employ resources and implement the recommendations strategically.
“What we really want to do is to keep [people] within our community and by creating a pleasant atmosphere, we can do that,” said Dan Padernacht, Chair of Community Board #8.
Díaz added that similar reports on other Bronx business districts will be issued in the future.

Los oficiales electos están buscando asegurar que los pasillos comerciales y los vecindarios dentro de Kingsbridge, el cual ha visto una reciente afluencia de desarrollo económico, sean mantenidos, embellecidos y mejorados.
Este pasado miércoles, 2 de septiembre, oficiales electos y líderes comunales presentaron los resultados de un estudio del pasillo comercial Kingsbridge/Broadway, el cual va desde Broadway entre el Oeste de las Calles 230 y 238, incluyendo las calles que conectan.
El análisis fue conducido por la Oficina del Presidente del Condado Rubén Díaz, Jr. junto con el miembro del Concejo Andrew Cohen, el Asambleísta Jeffrey Dinowits y la Corporación General de Desarrollo Económico (BOEDC, por sus siglas en inglés).
Además de los numerosos restaurantes, supermercados y tiendas de ropa que se alienan en Broadway, dos nuevos centros comerciales, Broadway Plaza Retail Development y Riverdale Crossing, abrieron en meses recientes. Los centros han atraído a varios detallistas nacionales, incluyendo TJ Maxx, Sports Authority, Blink Fitness, Chipotle, Parcy City, BJ Wholesale Club y Buffaloo Wild Wings, entre otros, para colocarse en el noroeste del Bronx.
“Este pasillo parece haber aumentado el tráfico no solo de compradores del Bronx, sino también viajeros del Norte de Manhattan y Westchester”, dijo Díaz.
El punto es asegurarse de que Kingsbridge, el cual también ha mantenido una vivienda relativamente estable y asequible, permanezca un lugar agradable para vivir, visitar y comprar.
“Sentimos que ya era tiempo de ser proactivo acerca de lo que sentimos debe continuar sucediendo en este distrito”, dijo Díaz. “Kingsbridge se está convirtiendo en un vecindario de moda, no solo en el Bronx, sino en la ciudad de Nueva York”.
“Las ventas al detal en Kingsbridge están prosperando”, señaló el Senador Jeff Klein, quien representa el distrito y tomo nota del Préstamo Rotativo en apoyo a los comercios locales para los cuales ha designado fondos. “Estoy orgulloso de asociarme con BOEDC en el Fondo el cual le permite a los comercios pedir prestado hasta $50,000 para hacer mejoras capitales. Esta es una gran manera, especialmente para las tiendas familiares buscando revitalizar sus tiendas, conseguir un préstamo y tomar parte en este Renacimiento de Kingsbridge”.
Líderes dijeron que el desarrollo económico creó impulso para estimular la inversión, y el enfoque era continuar mejorando el vecindario – para los residentes, compradores y dueños de negocios.
Las recomendaciones del estudio incluyen la remoción del graffiti; mejorar el mantenimiento de la basura; aumentar la iluminación; y la expansión de parques y espacios públicos.
“Aún hay potencial sin explotar para expandir los negocios actuales como también atraer nuevos”, dijo Marlene Cintrón, presidenta de BOEDC. “Mejorando el pasillo atraerá nuevos y excitantes negocios así como fomentar a los ya existentes a continuar invirtiendo en sus negocios”.
“Queremos hacer que todo parezca lo más atractivo posible”, añadió el miembro de la Asamblea Dinowitz. “Es un gran momento para estar en Kingsbridge”.
Otras recomendaciones incluye ajustar los metros de estacionamiento para permitir mayores intérvalos de tiempo y dirigir los esfuerzos de sanidad para unas aceras más limpias y paisajes lo más atractivos posible.

Los desarrolladores y los líderes de negocios locales dijeron que los esfuerzos eran bienvenidos.

“Hemos tenido éxito trayendo artistas y fanáticos a los espectáculos en Kingsbridge, pero podemos hacerlo mejor”, comentó Keith McDermott. Él es el co-fundador de la Serie Mensual de Música ‘Bronx Backyard’ en Mr. McGoo’s Pub, el cual ofrece música en vivo. “El estacionamiento es difícil, el ciclismo por Broadway es terrible y la MTA y el DOT deberían de trabajar con los artistas del Bronx para que las personas que viajan aquí sepan que este es un lugar que aprecia la creatividad”.
El estudio será presentado a varias agencias incluyendo el Departamento de Transportación (DOT, por sus siglas en inglés), el Departamento de Sanidad (DSNY, por sus siglas en inglés) y la Autoridad Metropolitana de Transito (MTA, por sus siglas en inglés) con el fin de emplear recursos e implementar las recomendaciones estratégicamente.
“Lo que realmente deseamos hacer es mantener las personas dentro de nuestra comunidad y creando una atmósfera placentera, podemos hacer eso”, dijo Dan Padernacht, Presidente de la Junta Comunal 8.
Díaz añadió que reportes similares en otros distritos de comercios del Bronx se estarán haciendo en el futuro.
