NYPL unveils expanded Van Cortlandt Library

Cramped, uncomfortable, run-down.
This is how some residents would describe the old branch of the Van Cortlandt Library.
“It was so small and uncomfortable, dreary,” said Faye Cohen, who lived near the library for the past 30 years. “To be honest, I avoided going there because it wasn’t a welcoming place.”
Cohen was among the host of local residents who gathered on July 15 as the New York Public Library (NYPL) officially cut the ribbon on a larger Van Cortlandt branch.
Located at 3882 Cannon Place, the 5,800-square-foot facility is more than twice the size of the previous branch, which was based around the corner on Sedgwick Avenue.
“The community has been needing this for a long time,” Cohen said.
Manager Peter Pamphile said the old branch was “basically, just one big room” that made extensive programming nearly impossible.
“If I was teaching a computer class, I might be using a chair that could go to someone who has to do homework,” Pamphile said. “Even a simple kids’ story time would interfere with the rest of the library.”
“The most exciting thing is we can expand our program offerings and not have them interfere with each other,” he stated.
The two-story library now includes dedicated spaces for children and teens, an adult reading room and community room, outdoor patio, 24 desktop computers and 22 laptops.
“It’s up-to-date now, and is a really nice space. It’s comfortable, not cramped,” said William Massey, a neighborhood resident who visited the branch for its grand opening.
Mildred Rivera, who brought her grandson to the grand opening, said she visited the previous branch every day.
“This one is roomier, and much better for kids,” she said.
The ribbon-cutting ceremony was attended by numerous Bronx elected officials, including Borough President Rubén Díaz Jr., City Councilmember Andrew Cohen, State Assemblymember Jeffrey Dinowitz and State Senator Allessandra Biaggi.
The NYPL’s costumed lion mascot also made an appearance.
“Libraries play a key role in communities as meeting places, education centers and public spaces. Libraries are especially critical for our youth, to nurture their love of reading and create lifelong fans of literature,” said Díaz.
Cohen said the NYPL rented the building that housed the previous branch, which meant the library could have lost its home at any time.
“Now we own a new state-of-the-art branch. It’s just a gorgeous facility. It’s kind of a legacy thing I’ll be extremely proud of for the rest of my life,” Cohen said.

The new Van Cortlandt branch was built inside a long-vacant building initially created for residential use. The property was purchased by NYPL in 2017.
Dinowitz, Díaz, Cohen and former State Senator Jeff Klein allocated $500,000 each in capital funding toward the $8 million project, while NYPL contributed the rest.
“The Van Cortlandt Library served its community well for over 50 years, but the much-loved institution has long needed a larger space to support its growing community,” said NYPL Chief Operating Officer Iris Weinshall in a statement. “The Library so appreciates that its partners in government understood that need and how critical the Library is to the people of the area. With their support, we now have a brand new, much bigger, modern library that will allow us to expand our offerings and best serve this community. This long-awaited project has been part of an unprecedented amount of capital investment in our branch libraries, which for over 100 years have strengthened communities across New York City.”
Prior to the grand opening, the Van Cortlandt branch was closed down for four weeks while staff moved the parts of the catalog over to the new building. Pamphile said the new branch received 12,000 new titles for its collection.
He said the expanded space should bolster attendance at the library.
“We had 40,000 visitors last year, and I’m hoping now we can do at least 60,000,” he said.
Elizabeth Paldino, the branch’s young adult librarian, said having dedicated spaces for different age groups would help visitors feel comfortable. The branch is planning to offer technology programs and writing courses for teens, she said.
“Before, we only had one room. Now everyone can feel like they have their own space,” she remarked. “The possibilities are endless for what we can do here.”

Apretada, incómoda, deteriorada.
Así es como algunos residentes describirían la antigua sucursal de la Biblioteca Van Cortlandt.
“Era tan pequeña e incómoda, lúgubre”, dijo Faye Cohen, quien ha vivido cerca de la biblioteca durante los últimos 30 años. “Para ser honesta, evitaba ir ahí porque no era un lugar acogedor”.
Cohen estuvo entre la multitud de residentes locales que se reunieron el 15 de julio cuando la Biblioteca Pública de Nueva York (NYPL, por sus siglas en inglés) cortó oficialmente la cinta en una sucursal de Van Cortlandt más grande.
Ubicada en el No. 3882 de Cannon Place, la instalación de 5,800 pies cuadrados es más del doble del tamaño de la sucursal anterior, que estaba ubicada a la vuelta de la esquina en la avenida Sedgwick.
“La comunidad ha necesitado esto por mucho tiempo”, dijo Cohen.
El gerente Peter Pamphile dijo que la antigua sucursal era “básicamente, una sola sala grande” que hacía casi imposible una programación ampliada.
“Si yo estuviera enseñando una clase de computación, Podría estar usando una silla que podría ser para alguien que tuviera que hacer la tarea”, dijo Pamphile. “Incluso un simple cuento para niños podría interferir con el resto de la biblioteca”.
“Lo más emocionante es que podemos ampliar nuestra oferta de programas y no hacer que interfieran entre sí”, afirmó.
La biblioteca de dos pisos ahora incluye espacios dedicados para niños y adolescentes, una sala de lectura para adultos y una sala comunitaria, un patio al aire libre, 24 computadoras de escritorio y 22 computadoras portátiles.
“Está actualizada ahora, y es un espacio muy bonito. Es cómodo, no abarrotado”, dijo William Massey, un residente del vecindario que visitó la sucursal para su inauguración.
Mildred Rivera, quien llevó a su nieto a la inauguración, dijo que visitaba la sucursal anterior todos los días.

La mascota de león disfrazado de la NYPL también hizo una aparición.

Cohen señaló que la NYPL alquilaba el edificio que albergaba la sucursal anterior, lo que significaba que la biblioteca podría haber perdido su hogar en cualquier momento.
“Ahora somos dueños de una nueva sucursal de última generación. Simplemente son hermosas instalaciones. Es una especie de legado del que me sentiré extremadamente orgulloso por el resto de mi vida”, comentó Cohen.

Antes de la inauguración, la sucursal Van Cortlandt fue cerrada durante cuatro semanas, mientras que el personal trasladaba las partes del catálogo al nuevo edificio. Pamphile dijo que la nueva sucursal recibió 12,000 nuevos títulos para su colección.
Explicó que el espacio ampliado debería reforzar la asistencia a la biblioteca.
“Recibimos 40,000 visitantes el año pasado, y espero que ahora podamos hacer al menos 60,000″, dijo.
Elizabeth Paldino, la joven adulta bibliotecaria de la sucursal, dijo que tener espacios dedicados para diferentes grupos de edad ayudaría a los visitantes a sentirse cómodos. La sucursal planea ofrecer programas de tecnología y cursos de escritura para adolescentes, señaló.
“Antes, solo teníamos una sala. Ahora todos pueden sentir que tienen su propio espacio”, comentó. “Las posibilidades son infinitas para lo que podemos hacer aquí”.
