Evelyn and Vincent Veale have been married for over 60 years.

Evelyn and Vincent grew up one block away from each other in the South Bronx.

“Every time I turned around, I saw him looking at me,” remarked Evelyn.

“I couldn’t help it,” said Vincent. “And I still can’t.”

The two knew they were meant to be together – seven decades ago.

Now married for over 60 years, Evelyn and Vincent Veale attended the 10th Annual Bronx Sweetheart Luncheon, held on February 15 at Villa Barone Manor.

Bronx Borough President Rubén Díaz Jr. and Healthfirst co-hosted the event, which honors Bronx couples who have been married 50 years or more.

Dozens of senior couples came together to share stories, have a meal and enjoy dancing.

“We’ve been here all ten times,” said Evelyn of the event. “We look forward to it every year.”

Al and Marge Orlieb of Morris Park recently celebrated their 50th anniversary, and were attending the event for the first time.

“It’s a wonderful affair,” said Marge. “We’re happy we could come here and meet other couples.”

“These are folks who made our communities stronger,” added Ann Marie Adamson-Serieux, Manager of Special Projects and Partnerships for Healthfirst. “They stayed in the area and raised their children here. It’s our job to serve them well in their golden years.”

Rosemarie and Joe Destefano said they had attended the luncheon numerous times, along their friends Frank and Jan Dibetteto.

“It’s nice to see the same people throughout the years,” said Rosemarie. “I think it’s good that the Borough President does this.”

Deputy Borough President Aurelia Greene said it was important to honor long-time residents who chose to remain in the Bronx.

“It’s our way to say thank you,” stated Greene. “It shows that we’re a stable borough, that our people remain here.”

The Veales remarked that the secret to a happy marriage is a simple one.

“Love each other, and pay attention to each other,” said Evelyn.

Her husband had different advice.

“Saying ‘yes, dear’ a lot is very important,” he quipped.

“No podía evitarlo”, dijo Vincent. Y todavía no puedo.

"These are folks who made our communities stronger," said Healthfirst’s Ann Marie Adamson-Serieux.

Frank and Jan Dibetteto have been together for more than 50 years.
