Hack to help. New York City will host its first hackathon event designed to support more than 9,000 youth currently in foster care. The Administration for Children’s Services (ACS), in partnership with the Mayor’s Office of Technology & Innovation (MOTI) and Think of Us, an online platform supporting foster youth, will sponsor the NYC Foster Care Technology & Policy Hackathon on December 3 and 4. Inspired by a similar hackathon held in May at the White House in Washington, D.C., the New York City event will bring together leaders in the child welfare field, along with the technology sector, city government and nonprofits to develop innovative technology solutions for challenging issues facing foster youth, parents and social workers. Participants are being sought by ACS to join the hackathon. Submissions from hackers are required by Wed., Nov. 23, and applicants will be notified of their selection on November 28. The hackathon will begin on Sat., Dec. 3 and will go overnight into Sun., Dec. 4 at eBay’s Manhattan headquarters. Among the challenges to be addressed at the hackathon are: improving peer to peer communication, enhancing the voice of children in transition plans, speeding up system responses and recruiting foster parents.
