A look back, and forward

It is hard to imagine but just this week, two years ago, we published our first edition of the Bronx Free Press and that this is our 106th issue.

It is amazing how time flies when you are doing something you love. Time seems to evaporate when one has been blessed to work with the most talented, honest and hard working people that one could have hoped to have worked with.

Our growth has been nothing short of spectacular.  The support we have received from our readers, advertisers and our institutional partners has created a new model for how to publish a successful community newspaper in today’s changing media market.

I want to take a moment to note what we have accomplished, and how privileged I feel to have been associated with the Bronx Free Press.

In those106 weekly issues, we have covered critical issues affecting our communities in the Bronx, and beyond.

We are proud of our coverage on issues such as the housing foreclosure crisis, budget, education and Medicaid cuts, same sex marriage legislation, the Occupy Wall Street movement, the closings of failing schools and opening of new business.
As if that were not enough, we have published a series of articles demystifying our court system, profiled a number of our elected and community leaders, as well as community residents, all who make the Bronx the remarkable place we call home.
We are particularly proud of our coverage of the livery industry’s successful struggle to enact legislation which ended 40 years of discrimination, and our coverage of the work and successes of some of the premier non-for-profit institutions in the Bronx.
It was the vision of my fellow publishers David Keisman and Luis Miranda which gave birth to the idea of publishing the Bronx Free Press. They were the architects of this idea and remain the force behind it today.

It was the work of Dan Bader, our first editor, and Mike Fitelson, in the early days of our adventure, who stepped into unknown territory and neighborhoods that allowed for this experiment to begin. It was the work too of Tony Reyes who has maintained our website a vibrant destination for dynamic content.

From the very beginning, our staff, reporters, production team, and our longest serving employee, Landa M. Towns, understood that we were striving to create something new and exciting, and rose to the occasion.

But, as with every venture into uncharted territory it takes one individual to come to epitomize the essence of the undertaking, and that is our editor Debralee Santos. Her incredible gift for writing, her commitment to excellence, and her insistence on nothing but the highest of standards from herself and everyone else at the paper is the fuel that propels the Bronx Free Press towards its success.

And to you, all our readers, thank you for the privilege of sharing your story with us at the Bronx Free Press.There is hard and good work ahead for us all, for our borough, and its 1.4 million residents: our neighbors, our family, our friends.
May the past two years be but a humble prelude to decades of excellence.

Una ojeada al pasado y al futuro

Es difícil imaginar, pero justo esta semana, hará dos años que publicamos nuestra primera edición del Bronx Free Press, siendo este nuestro ejemplar No.106. Es sorprendente ver cómo vuela el tiempo cuando usted hace algo que le apasiona. Al parecer, el tiempo se evapora cuando usted tiene la bendición de colaborar con la gente más talentosa, honrada y trabajadora que usted se pueda imaginar. Nuestro crecimiento ha sido algo más que espectacular. El respaldo que hemos recibido de nuestros lectores, anunciantes y asociados institucionales, ha creado un nuevo modelo de cómo publicar un periódico comunitario en el cambiante mercado de los medios.

Quiero tomar un momento para destacar lo que hemos logrado, y cuan privilegiado me siento de estar asociado con Bronx Free Press. En esos 106 ejemplares hemos dado cobertura a temas de gran importancia que han afectado a nuestras comunidades en el Bronx y más allá. Estamos orgullosos de nuestra cobertura en temas tales como la crisis de la ejecución hipotecaria, presupuestos, cortes a la educación y al Medicaid, legislación para matrimonios del mismo sexo, el movimiento “Ocupar Wall Street”, el cierre de escuelas fallidas y la apertura de nuevos negocios. Como si esto fuera poco, hemos publicado una serie de artículos desmitificando nuestros sistemas de cortes, los perfiles de una serie de reconocidos líderes, así como de residentes de la comunidad, quienes hacen del Bronx el extraordinario lugar al que llamamos hogar.

De manera particular, nos sentimos orgullosos de nuestra cobertura de la exitosa lucha librada por la industria del taxi sin medallón que terminó en la promulgación de nueva legislación que puso fin a 40 años de discriminación. De igual manera, nos enorgullecemos de nuestra cobertura de los logros y el trabajo de algunas de las principales instituciones sin-fines-de-lucro en el Bronx. Fue la visión de mis compañeros publicistas David Keisman y Luis Miranda la que dio origen a la idea del Bronx Free Press. Fueron ellos los arquitectos de esta idea y permanecen siendo la fuerza que le sostiene.

Fue la labor de Dan Bader, nuestro primer editor, y Mike Fitelson, quienes en los tiempos iniciales de nuestra aventura penetraron a territorio desconocido y en nuevas vecindades lo que permitió que se diese inicio a este experimento.

Ha sido también la labor de Tony Reyes que ha mantenido nuestra página web una destino vibrante con contenido dinámico.

Desde un principio, nuestro personal, reporteros, equipo de producción, y nuestra más antigua empleada, Landa M. Towns, comprendieron que estábamos esforzándonos en crear algo nuevo y emocionante, y se pusieron a la altura de las circunstancias. Pero, como toda aventura en territorio desconocido, se requiere de alguien que llegue para personificar la esencia de una tarea de envergadura, y esta persona es nuestra editora Debralee Santos.

Su increíble talento para escribir, su compromiso con la excelencia, y su insistencia en los estándares más elevados, para ella y para todos en el periódico, han sido la chispa que ha impulsado el éxito de Bronx Free Press. Y a todos nuestros lectores, gracias por el privilegio de compartir su historia con nosotros en el Bronx Free Press.

Hay trabajo duro – y bueno – a continuación para todos nosotros, para nuestro condado, y sus 1.4 millones de residentes: nuestros vecinos, nuestra familia, nuestros amigos.
