Celebration of Bronx Faces and Voices

Celebrate the book launch and signing of Bronx Faces and Voices: Sixteen Stories of Courage and Community by Emita Brady Hill and Janet Butler Munch. Hill is Chancellor Emeritus of Indiana University Kokomo. She spent 20 years at Lehman College in various roles including Department Chair, Dean and Vice President, as well as Founding Director of the Bronx Regional History Project. Janet Munch is Associate Professor and Lehman’s Special Collections Librarian. She previously worked at Bronx County Historical Society.

Bronx Faces and Voices presents 16 individuals sharing personal candid stories of their lives in the Bronx from its early days through troubled years of arson, crime, and flight in the 1970’s and 1980’s and how they anticipated a better and more prosperous future.
The voices in this volume include elected officials, religious leaders, and activists.

Celebration of Bronx Faces and Voices will be held at the Lehman College Leonard Lief Library Atrium’s 2nd Floor on Wed., Dec. 10^th.
The Leonard Lief Library at Lehman College is located on Paul Avenue.

Meet and Greet Fund Raiser

Friends of Soundview Park will host a fundraiser on Wed., Dec. 3^rd to continue providing free programs and beautification projects that benefit the waterfront park and the community. Since 2010, the Friends of Soundview Park has offered such programs as the Soundview Park festivals, Sing for Hope pianos, the butterfly meditation garden, International Coastal Cleanup Days, mural painting, and nature walks, among others.

The fundraiser will feature guest speakers, raffles, live music, food and more, and will take place at Soundview Park, located at 1640-1658 Lafayette Avenue at 8:00 p.m.

3D Design and Printing

Take a look at the emerging 3D printing industry and desktop 3D printers. Access free 3D design software and learn how to print popular designs and your own.  The workshop on Sun., Nov. 23rd will be led by Alex Vasiyev and will be held at 1:00 p.m. at the Bronx Business Incubator, located 1231 Lafayette Avenue Suite 2L.

Vasilyev is CTO at MatterFacture and a professional architect from the Pratt Institute. Matterfacture is a multidisciplinary venture with a focus on innovation in manufacturing. The firm facilitates the adoption of innovative manufacturing methods by those outside of the industry itself and seeks to bridge the gap between the 3D printing community and the general public.

College is Possible!

Explore the steps to a college-bound action plan with NYSED NYC Special Education Parent Centers, transition specialists, and the Department of Education (DOE) with a panel discussion on Tues., Dec. 2^nd. Topics will include:

• Choosing the right option (certificate, 2 year or 4 year)
• Getting ready while in high school
• Admissions, financial aid, remedial assistance (CUNY START)
• Student advocacy
  “College is Possible!” is presented by Resources for Children with Special Needs (RCSN) and will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Lehman College’s Faculty Dining Room in the Music Building located at 250 Bedford Park Boulevard West.

RCSN’s mission is to enhance the quality of life and promote positive outcomes for children and youth, birth through age 26, with disabilities, their parents and families throughout New York City.

Celebre la presentación y firma del libro Bronx Faces and Voices: Sixteen Stories of Courage and Community de Emita Brady Hill y Janet Butler Munch. Hill es canciller emérito de Indiana University Kokomo. Pasó 20 años en Lehman College en diversos roles, como presidenta de departamento, decana y vicepresidenta, así como directora fundadora del Proyecto de Historia Regional del Bronx. Janet Munch es profesora asociada y bibliotecaria de las Colecciones Especiales de Lehman. Anteriormente trabajó en la Sociedad Histórica del condado del Bronx.

Bronx Faces and Voices presenta a 16 individuos que comparten historias personales y sinceras de su vida en el Bronx -desde sus inicios, pasando por los problemas de incendios provocados, el crimen, y los años 1970 y 1980- y la forma en que anticiparon un futuro mejor y más próspero.

Ayudando a Soundview

Amigos del parque Soundview organizan un evento el miércoles 3 de diciembre para recaudar fondos que les permitan continuar proporcionando programas gratuitos y proyectos de embellecimiento que beneficien al parque costero y la comunidad. Desde 2010, Amigos del Parque Soundview ha ofrecido programas como los festivales Soundview Park, pianos Sing for Hope, el jardín de meditación mariposa, los días de limpieza costera internacional, pintura mural y paseos por la naturaleza, entre otras actividades.

Diseño e impresión 3D

Explore los pasos para un plan de acción rumbo a la universidad en los Centros de Educación Especial para Padres NYSED NYC, especialistas en transición, y el Departamento de Educación (DOE por sus siglas en inglés), con un debate el martes 2 de diciembre. Los temas incluirán:

• Elegir la opción correcta (certificado, 2 años o 4 años)
• Alistarse durante la escuela preparatoria
• Admisiones, ayuda financiera, asistencia correctiva (CUNY START)
• Defensa estudiantil
  “College is Possible!” es presentado por Recursos para Niños con Necesidades Especiales (RCSN por sus siglas en inglés) y se celebrará de 6:00 pm a 8:00 pm en Lehman College, en el comedor del profesorado del edificio de música, situado en el 250 de Bedford Park Boulevard West.

La misión de RCSN es mejorar la calidad de vida y promover resultados positivos para niños y jóvenes con discapacidad, desde el nacimiento hasta los 26 años, sus padres y las familias en toda la ciudad de Nueva York.
