Decomposers Parade
Get a glimpse at some underground creatures at the Wave Hill House on Sat., Oct. 20th from 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Storyteller Rama Mandel will read Up in the Garden and Down in the Dirt to examine the critters at work in the cool, damp earth beneath the ground. Using crafts, visitors can then create their own dark and murky ecosystem of insects and decomposers like earthworms and fungi. After you top off your creation with flowers, join others and march in a fall parade. Wave Hill is located at West 249th and Independence Avenue.

Start a spark
Make a spark at the Van Cortlandt Nature Center on Sat., Nov. 3rd from 1:00 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. Learn primitive and modern methods for making fire safely and responsibly while exploring the outdoors with the Urban Park Rangers. The rangers will teach you techniques to be prepared for an unexpected dark situation outdoors. Take the skills you learn and teach others about fire safety. The center is located at 246 Broadway.

Chess 4 Kids
It’s checkmate at Riverdale Library on Mon., Oct 22nd at 3:00 p.m. Learn how to play chess or prove your mastery of the game. Test out new strategies and compete with various players as you sharpen your skills. With the movement of every pawn, rook, knight and more, you will take a step closer to saying “checkmate.” The event is open to beginners and chess experts alike. Giant Pumpkins
Records will be broken at the New York Botanical Garden (NYBG) on Sat., Oct. 20th from 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. Huge pumpkins from around the country, including a few that weigh more than a ton, will be showcased at NYBG. Meet the men and women behind these giant gourds and learn more about the growing process. Go for a photo op with these plump pumpkins on display. The garden is located at 2900 Southern Boulevard.

Literacy Celebration
Revel in reading at Hunts Point Library on Wed., Oct. 24th at 4:00 p.m. Families are invited to celebrate literacy with representatives of Jumpstart, a national early education organization. Language, literacy and social-emotional programming will be featured during a read aloud of Maybe Something Beautiful by Isabel Campoy and Theresa Howel. Afterwards, activities and giveaways based on the book will take place for all in attendance. The library is located at 877 Southern Boulevard.
