The South Bronx Culture Trail Festival
Casita Maria, Dancing in the Streets and City Lore in partnership with LISC, New York Housing Authority, Banana Kelly and BronxWorks have all teamed up to present The South Bronx Culture Trail Festival CINEMUSICA CITY on Fri., Oct. 17 and Sat., Oct. 18th in the Mott Haven and Hunts Point areas of the Bronx. CINEMUSICA CITY is a two-night celebration of the cultural legacy of historic South Bronx concert halls and movie theaters. Along with reanimating long-forgotten sites with projections of vintage footage of pioneer Bronx artists, the festival culminates in a night at the movies with Latin music and hip hop films as well as live performances by emerging Bronx teen artists.

Dancing In My Cockroach Killers
Dancing In My Cockroach Killers is a tribute to poet, storyteller and playwright Magdalena Gómez. Pregones’ ensemble seeks to deliver the full range of Gomez’s rhythmic realism, boundless hope, and humor. Gomez’s characters face real-life challenges with courage and are openly inspired by friends, family, and Latin icons as varied as Lolita Lebrón, Joe Cuba, and Iris Chacón. From Why I Lost The Popularity Contest, to Soap and Water, to Madre de Bomba, each story tries to portray passion and soul.

“Think Pink” Bronx
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Mommy To Be invites residents to the Second Annual “Think Pink” event taking place at Alley Cat Cafe on East Tremont Avenue on Fri., Oct. 24 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
“Think Pink” is free, and will feature gift bags, raffles and door prizes, and massage therapists and beauty consultants will be on hand. There will also be free beauty makeovers and bra fittings.

Puerto Rican Artisan Fair
On Sat., Nov. 22nd, from 11:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. the largest Puerto Rican artisan event outside of Puerto Rico will be held in the Bronx, as will the Puerto Rican Authors’ Expo, which welcomes a great number of authors. Both events will be held Hostos Center for the Arts and Culture located at 450 Grand Concourse.

Recapturing the Scenic Wilds
The exhibit, “Recpaturing the Scenic Wilds” is inspired by the naturalist legacy of Theodore Roosevelt (1858–1919), a former resident of Wave Hill House who had a lifelong passion for discovering and collecting specimens for public exhibit. It seeks to investigate and complicate the notion of the natural history display. In the 1870’s, when Roosevelt was 11 and 12 years old, his family spent two summers at Wave Hill, and the burgeoning naturalist developed his ardent interest in birds, taxidermy and the study of nature.This attraction to natural history and its display is shared by the nine artists whose work is on view at Wave Hill. Each artist responds in various ways to this type of artificially “organic” exhibit, where the experience of the natural world is transformed into a tightly controlled scene, tableau or informational resource, often revealing as much about our relationship to nature as it does about the subject depicted. The artists featured are Alexa Hoyer, Liselot van der Heijden, Dana Levy. Mark Dion, Richard Barnes, Lori Nix, Ruth Marshall, Jessica Segall and Hugh Hayden.
“Recapturing the Scenic Wilds” will be on display until Sun., Dec.7th at Wave Hill’s Glyndor Gallery.

Festival Culture Trail del sur del Bronx
Casita Maria, Dancing in the Streets y City Lore, en asociación con LISC, la Autoridad de Vivienda de Nueva York, Banana Kelly y BronxWorks se han unido para presentar el Festival Culture Trail del sur del Bronx CINEMUSICA CITY el viernes 17 y sábado 18 de octubre en Mott Haven y Hunts Point, en el Bronx. CINEMUSICA CITY es una celebración de dos noches del legado cultural de las históricas salas de conciertos y cines del sur del Bronx. Además de reanimar sitios largamente olvidados con proyecciones de imágenes de época de pioneros artistas del Bronx, el festival culmina con una noche de películas de hip hop y música latina, así como actuaciones en vivo de artistas emergentes adolescentes del Bronx.

Dancing in my Cockroach Killers es un homenaje a la poeta, narradora y dramaturga Magdalena Gómez. El conjunto de pregones pretende ofrecer toda la gama de realismo rítmico de Gómez, una esperanza sin límites y humor. Los personajes de Gómez enfrentan desafíos de la vida real con coraje y son inspirados abiertamente por amigos, familiares e íconos latinos tan variados como Lolita Lebrón, Joe Cuba e Iris Chacón. Desde Porqué perdí el concurso de popularidad, pasando por Jabón y agua, hasta Madre de Bomba, cada historia intenta retratar la pasión y el alma.

Think Pink del Bronx
Octubre es el mes de concientización del cáncer de mama. Mommy To Be invita a los residentes a la segunda edición anual de “Think Pink”, un evento que tendrá lugar en el Café Alley Cat en la avenida East Tremont el viernes 24 de octubre de 5:00 p.m. a 8:00 p.m. “Think Pink” es gratuito y contará con bolsas de regalos, rifas y premios; además habrá terapeutas de masaje y consultores de belleza a su disposición y cambios de imagen y ajustes de sostén gratuitos.

Feria de artesanos puertorriqueños
El sábado 22 de noviembre de 11:00 a.m. a 9:00 p.m. el mayor evento de artesanos boricuas fuera de Puerto Rico se llevará a cabo en el Bronx, al igual que la expo de autores puertorriqueños, que da la bienvenida un gran número de autores . Ambos eventos se llevarán a cabo en el Centro Hostos para las Artes y Cultura, ubicado en el 450 de Grand Concourse.

Recuperando la belleza salvaje
La exposición “Recapturing the Scenic Wilds” se inspira en el legado naturalista de Theodore Roosevelt (1858-1919), un antiguo residente de la casa Wave Hill que tenía una pasión vital por descubrir y recoger muestras para exhibición pública. Pretende investigar y compilar la noción de la exhibición de la historia natural. En la década de 1870, cuando Roosevelt tenía 11 y 12 años de edad, su familia pasó dos veranos en Wave Hill, y el pujante naturalista desarrolló su ardiente interés en las aves, la taxidermia y el estudio de la naturaleza.
Esta atracción por la historia natural y su exhibición es compartida por los nueve artistas cuyo trabajo está a la vista en Wave Hill. Cada artista responde de diversas maneras a este tipo de exhibición artificialmente “orgánica”, donde la experiencia del mundo natural se transforma en una escena estrictamente controlada, un cuadro o recurso de información, a menudo revelando mucho acerca de nuestra relación con la naturaleza como lo hace sobre el tema representado. Los artistas participantes son Alexa Hoyer, Liselot van der Heijden, Dana Levy, Mark Dion, Richard Barnes, Lori Nix, Ruth Marshall, Jessica Segall y Hugh Hayden. “Recapturing the Scenic Wilds” estará en exhibición hasta el domingo 7 de diciembre en la galería Glyndor de Wave Hill.
