Run the River
Hit the Soundview Park Field House on Sat., Sep. 29th at 9:00 a.m. and join the Bronx River Alliance Greenway Team for a friendly 23-mile bike ride along the Bronx River Greenway. Ride along New York City’s only freshwater river from the estuary of the Bronx River in Soundview to its source at the Kensico Dam in Westchester County. You may choose to ride back for a 46-mile ride, or exit the ride whenever or wherever is safe and convenient. The field house is located at 1550 Lafayette Avenue.

Ghouls at the Garden
Creep into some fun at the New York Botanical Garden (NYBG) on Sat., Oct. 6th from 10:00 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. Explore more than 100 friendly, larger-than-life scarecrows set among nearly 1,000 rare and unusual pumpkins and gourds. During the tour, pick and pot a spooky black coleus plant to take home; put on a haunting show with insect, owl, and scarecrow puppets; or investigate a mysterious Victorian playhouse to learn all about bats. Lastly, watch some of the city’s best artists carve pumpkins and view a live presentation featuring creatures like snakes and lizards. The garden is located at 2900 Southern Boulevard.

Debate League
Help determine the best debater at InTech Academy on Sat., Sep. 29th from 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Volunteer to be a judge for the NYC Urban Debate League as they assist middle and high school students with their public speaking skills in a district debate competition. Training and guidelines will be provided to volunteers at the start of the project. Breakfast and lunch are provided at each session. The school is located at 2975 Tibbett Avenue.

A Boricua Lens
Puerto Rican media takes the spotlight at Lehman College on Thurs., Oct. 4th at 12:30 p.m. Come to the college’s Studio Theater in the Speech and Theatre Building for a 75-minute program which will include a selection of short films and music videos directed by recent graduates and current students of the University of Puerto Rico-Mayagüez (UPRM) Film Certificate program. Dr. Mary Leonard, Founder and Director of the UPRM certificate program, will present an overview of film in the Caribbean, and specifically Puerto Rico, before displaying the students’ media. Durante el recorrido, recoja y plante una espeluznante planta coleo negra para llevar a casa; monte un espectáculo inquietante con marionetas de insectos, búhos y espantapájaros; o investigue una misteriosa casa victoriana para aprender todo sobre los murciélagos. Por último, observe a algunos de los mejores artistas de la ciudad tallar calabazas y vea una presentación en vivo con criaturas como serpientes y lagartijas.
