Coastal Cleanup
Clear the waters at Soundview Park on Sat., Sep. 15th from 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Join the Bronx River Alliance and Recreational Equipment Inc. (REI) in a cleanup of the Bronx River. At the event, participants will be able to attend REI outdoor education classes, can enter a raffle to win REI gear and will receive free REI stewardship t-shirt. Butterfly Walk
Watch the flutter at Wave Hill on Sun., Sep. 16th at 1:00 p.m. Fall is the time of year where caterpillars and butterflies animate the gardens. Naturalist Paul Keim will briefly introduce traits of butterfly behavior and then lead an outdoor walk to observe monarch and other butterflies in the gardens. Learn about their habits and habitat, food sources and adaptions for survival. Children aged 10 years old and older are welcome with an adult. The meeting place will be at the garden’s Perkins Visitor Center. Wave Hill is located 675 West 252nd Street.

Night Hike
Discover hidden gems at Van Cortlandt Park on Sat., Sep. 22nd from 7:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. The Urban Park Rangers will lead a hike through Van Cortlandt Park under the cover of darkness. Find out what lurks at night. Can you see the many animals that call the park home? Make sure to wear comfortable hiking shoes. The group will meet at the Van Cortlandt Nature Center. The center is located at 245 Broadway.

A Canon of Community
Consider the facets of city life at the Bronx Documentary Center on Thurs., Sep. 27th at 6:00 p.m. Explore how human behavior and urban life interact with and shape each other in this two-panel, cross-sector dialogue between New America Fellows and MacArthur Fellows. The conversation will discuss how race, class, legal status and marginalization can inform how individuals experience the city. Locally rooted stories from the speakers’ distinct fields of study will be used to shine a community-level lens on large-scale issues. The center is located at 614 Courtlandt Avenue.

Movie Under the Stars
Watch out for the shrinking at Williamsbridge Oval on Sat., Sep. 15th from 7:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m. Kids get miniaturized by inventor Wayne Szalinski’s shrink ray while trying to retrieve an errant ball in the film Honey, I Shrunk the Kids. Watch as the ¼-inch tall children try to make it home safe through a yard where sprinklers bring treacherous storms and garden-variety ants stampede like elephants. Feel free to bring a blanket to sit on; there will be a limited supply of chairs available. Glass bottles are not permitted. The park is located at 3225 Reservoir Oval East.
