6th Annual Allerton Avenue Festival
On Sun., Aug. 25th, the Allerton Avenue Festival and International Food Show invites residents to celebrate cultural diversity throughout the borough. The day will feature kid’s activities, games, food, clowns, face painting, balloon art, live entertainment, raffles, giveaways, vendors and much more. This event is produced by MAS Inc. and is made possible through the contributions of CenterLight Healthcare. The event is also sponsored by Affinity Health Plan, Metro Plus, LaSorsa Auto Group, and Verizon Wireless, and will take place at Allerton Avenue between Wallace and Barnes Avenues from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Alchemy in Art: Selected Abstract Sculpture by Barry Feuerstein
The Hebrew Home at Riverdale invites art enthusiasts to its latest exhibition, “Alchemy in Art: Selected Abstract Sculpture” by Barry Feuerstein, featuring four recently completed sculptures that are composed of copper, stone and sapele – a reddish-brown wood similar to mahogany. Three of the works rise 6-12 inches off the ground, and they vary in width, with the narrowest only 12 inches wide, and are from 10-16 feet in length. Titles such as Drifting Continents, Pangaea, String Theory and E=Higgs boson x C2, reflect the inspiration Feuerstein takes from science and the natural world: particle physics, mathematical principles (such as String Theory, the Golden Section and Fibonacci Symbols) and global warming. He has also addressed these subjects in paintings, photographs and drawings. Feuerstein has an MFA degree in sculpture from City College, City University of New York. He has been in several group exhibitions, including at The Drawing Center, P.S. 1 and the Islip Art Museum. His work is in the permanent collections of The City College Art Collection, New York; The Art Collection of The Hebrew Home at Riverdale; Edwin A. Ulrich Museum of Art, Wichita, KS; St. Mary’s College Museum Collection, St. Mary City, MD, and Alexandria Museum of Fine Arts, Alexandria, LA.
As a member of the American Association of Museums, The Hebrew Home at Riverdale is committed to publicly exhibiting its art collection throughout its 19-acre campus, including the Derfner Judaica Museum and a sculpture garden overlooking the Hudson River and Palisades. The Derfner Judaica Museum + The Art Collection provide educational and cultural programming for residents of the Hebrew Home, their families and the general public from throughout New York City, its surrounding suburbs and visitors from elsewhere.
The Home is a nonprofit, non-sectarian geriatric organization serving more than 7,000 elderly persons through its resources and community service programs. The Art Collection, Gilbert Pavilion Gallery and grounds are open daily, from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The Derfner Judaica Museum is open, Sun. to Thurs. from 10:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
“Alchemy in Art” will be up for display until Sun., Dec. 29th.

Fordham Fever Fridays
There are only two more Fever Fridays left at Muller Park and Plaza (corner of E. Fordham Road and Creston Road). Fever Firday will be held on Fri., Sept 6th and Fri., Oct. 4th. Fever Friday provides free Zumba workout sessions from area gyms. Other offerings inclide yoga/meditation, natural juice vendors, free screenings, health mobiles, and diabetes, cholesterol and blood pressure testing.

Alquimia en Arte: Escultura Abstracta Seleccionada por Barry Feuerstein
La Casa Hebrea en Riverdale invita a los amantes del arte a su última exposición, Alquimia en el Arte: Escultura Abstracta Seleccionada por Barry Feuerstein, presentando esculturas recientemente completadas que están compuestas de cobre, piedra y ‘sapele’ – una madera marrón-rojiza similar a la caoba. Tres de los trabajos se levantan de 6 a 12 pulgadas del suelo, y varían de ancho, con el más estrecho de 12 pulgadas de ancho, y son de 10 a 16 pies de largo. Solo quedan dos Viernes de Fiebre en ‘Muller Park y Plaza’ (esquina del este de Fordham Road y Creston Road). Viernes de Fiebre se celebrará el viernes, 6 de septiembre y el viernes, 3 de octubre. Viernes de Fiebre provee sesiones de Zumba de gimnasios del área. Tambien se ofrecera yoga/meditación, vendedores de jugos naturales, exámenes gratis, mamografías móviles, y exámenes de diabetes, colesterol y de presión sanguínea.
