Bronx Literary Fair

The Bronx Library Center, located at 310 East Kingsbridge Road, will a host a Bronx Literary Fair on Sat., May 18th from 11:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.

The event is free, and will feature:

• Peter and the Wolf Puppet Show by Garces Puppeteria at12:00 p.m.

• “How to get published in literary magazines” forum, as facilitated by Carolyn Butts, editor of African Voices and Ron Kavanaugh, editor of Mosaic Magazine at1:00 p.m.

• Fiction Writing Workshop, facilitated by Claude Grant, Co-founder of Blind Beggar Press at 2:00 p.m.

• Readings by poets Layding Kaliba and Peggy Robles-Alvarado at 2:30 p.m.

• Highlights of Bronx History by Bronx Borough Historian Lloyd Ultan at 4:00 p.m.

• Readings by poets Sandra Maria EWsteves and Tony Mitchelson at 4:30 p.m.

• Latin Jazz Concert by the Edy Martinez Big Band; different presentations from 11:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

U.S. Marines on Orchard Beach

The U.S. Marines will be conducting air and ground demonstrations for the public on Fri., May 24th at Orchard Beach at 2:30 p.m. as part of Fleet Week.

The demonstrations will feature various helicopters in use by the Marine Corps. For the demonstration, the aircrafts will sweep the area to ensure that the landing zone is clear.

The helicopters, carrying a platoon of Marines, will then fly into the landing zone.

The Marines will quickly deploy from the aircraft and secure the area. After the demonstration, the helicopters will land and be available for public display.

Affinity to Salute Bronx Week

On Fri., May 17th, Affinity Health Plan will salute Bronx Week by hosting a Health Day and offering free health screenings courtesy of MedAlliance at the Affinity Community Service Center located 301 East Fordham Road. The event will begin at 12:00 p.m. and end at 5:00 p.m. Affinity Health Plan will offer free giveaways, music and face painting for the community. Their mascot, Rex, will be on hand to entertain the children. The event is free.

CityParks Puppet Mobile will perform Little Red’s Hood at the St. James Recreation Center, located at 2530 Jerome Ave on Thurs., May 23rd at 10:00 a.m. The presentation is a retelling of the classic Little Red Riding Hood tale updated with a modern sensibility. Little Red is a smart, young city slicker who is too focused on her smart-phone to notice her surroundings. Wulfric is a misunderstood wolf with a sweet tooth. When Little Red travels from New York City to the country to deliver some cupcakes to her Grandma, she encounters a colorful cast of characters as Wulfric the Wolf tries to head her off at the pass.

The production features a dozen, hand-made marionettes crafted by the expert puppeteers from the Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre.

Bronx Day at the Botanical Garden

The New York Botanical Garden invites all Bronx residents to the 23rd Annual Bronx Day on Sat., Jun 1st at the Garden’s Clay Family Picnic Pavilion. The event will feature free musical entertainment, family-oriented events (such as face painting & more) and health, Finance and educational resource information kiosks.

Advanced tickets are required for admission.

First Annual Senior Prom

Councilmember Fernando Cabrera is hosting several proms to provide seniors with a unique experience; some have never had the opportunity to attend a prom. This celebration will provide them with the opportunity to dance the afternoon away, enjoy refreshments, and have pictures taken.
