Fair at the Square
The Westchester Square Merchants Association, in partnership with the Bronx Council on the Arts and NYC Department of Parks and Recreation, invite all residents to the 6th Annual “Fair at The Square”. Sponsored by The Westchester Square Business Improvement District, this free family event takes place on Sat., May 10th from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. along the streets of Westchester Square between St. Raymond and Westchester Avenues. The festival promotes the diversity in the commerce, culture, and community of Westchester Square, and celebrates the “rebuilding of a great area for a great future.”
This multi-cultural event, which attracts thousands of fair-goers throughout the day, will feature an all-day concert with popular artists including salsa Grammy Award winner Ray de la Paz, freestyle musician Coro, premier tri-state area band Alive N Kickin’ and many more. The concert will be hosted by Dennis “Dion” Nardone of WVOX 1460AM Radio and Artie Rodríguez of Artie and Legit from The Diamanté Show. In addition to the concert, a Youth Stage on the terrace of Owen Dolen Park will be hosted by Bharati Kemraj of the BHARATI Dance Academy and DJ Nitro, and will showcase a variety of performers including international recording artist Veronica Kole, Sierra Nelson, Ariana Faith, Nu Soul Band, Le Essencia of Lorenz Dance Studio, singers from The Bronx House, Dancers Dreamzzz, Elijah Radio, 2nd Generation South Bronx Kids, Zumba and Tai Chi demos, Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre and much more.
This year’s Fair will also feature the Bronx Council on the Arts’ annual Art Walk showcasing the works of local Bronx artists and artisans, an MTA Antique Bus, and a Kid’s Activity Area featuring face painting and arts and crafts, the FDNY Smoke House and Antique Fire Engine, Roberto the Magician, Merian Soto’s Branch Dances and other activities as scores of merchants and vendors display their products, wares, and services.

Art Deco Delights
Join the Bronx Borough Historian Lloyd Ultan on Sat., May 10th on a stroll through one of the Bronx’s noted designated historic districts – the Grand Concourse. To some, this boulevard serves as a reminder of the days when the Bronx was part of New York County and the thoroughfare connected that county to the rest of the United States. The Grand Boulevard and Concourse, its original name, later became lined with movie theaters, center malls, and most notably, Art Deco buildings. This tour will start on the southwest corner of the Grand Concourse and East 167th Street and will end at East 149th Street.

Groundbreakers
The exhibition “Groundbreakers” at the New York Botanical Garden (NYBG) celebrates many of the early 20th-century America’s most influential women in landscape architecture and design, as well as garden photography and writing. Experience an evocation of an American estate garden, as inspired by the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Garden in Maine. The exhibit offers various components that include poetry, music, and photography. Discover the work and significant contributions of these women to American history and culture. “Groundbreakers” will be on display from Sat., May 17th to Sun., Sept 7th. The New York Botanical Garden is located on 2900 Southern Boulevard.

Woodlawn Walking Tours
Friends of Woodlawn Cemetery presents walking tours of the cemetery on Saturdays featuring significant memorials and resting places of notable individuals. The Woodlawn Cemetery is the resting place of many notable individuals, including the American novelist Herman Melville. On Sundays, the cemetery features special theme tours that go off the beaten path to visit gravesites of interesting individuals. Tours are approximately 2 hours in length and involve 1.5 miles of walking.

Solo Rites: Seven Breaths
Bronx Council on the Arts and Raymour & Flanigan present internationally acclaimed
vocalist, composer and multi-instrumentalist Jen Shyu on Sat., May 3rd at 2:00 p.m.
Shyu is an experimental jazz vocalist, composer, multi-instrumentalist, dancer, scholar, and educator who has performed as a solo artist, bandleader and collaborator in the U.S. and abroad. Her career credits and awards are many. She is a three-time winner of BCA’s BRIO (Bronx Recognizes Its Own) award and most recently received a 2012-13 Fulbright Scholarship through which she traveled in Indonesia to study Sindhenan, traditional Javanese improvisational singing. The performance features excerpts from Shyu’s solo opera Solo Rite: Seven Breaths. Seven Breaths presents reflections upon her pilgrimage throughout Taiwan, East Timor, Indonesia, Vietnam, and South Korea. Using multiple tools of expression in multiple languages, this performance reveals a personal journey of loss and redemption. Admission is free. The event will take place at Raymour & Flanigan store at the Bronx Terminal Market, located 610 Exterior Street, Level 4, (corner of 151st Street).

Feria en ‘The Square’
La Asociación de Comerciantes de Westchester Square, en asociación con el Concejo de Artes del Bronx y el Departamento de Parques y Recreos de la ciudad de NY, lo invita al 6to Anual “Feria @ The Square”. Auspiciado por el Distrito de Mejoramiento Comercial de Westchester Square, este evento se celebrará el sábado, 10 de mayo de 11:00 a.m. a 6:00 p.m. a lo largo de las calles de Westchester Square entre la Calle Raymond y la Avenida Westchester.
Este festival gratuito en la calle promueve la diversidad en el comercio, cultura y la comunidad de Westchester Square, todos uniéndose para celebrar la “reconstrucción de una gran área para un gran futuro”.

El Distrito Histórico del Grand Concourse – Delicias del Arte Deco
El sábado, 10 de mayo, únase al historiador del condado del Bronx, Lloyd Ultan en un paseo a través de uno de los designados distritos históricos – el Grand Concourse. Para algunos, este boulevard sirve como recordatorio de los días cuando el Bronx era parte del condado de Nueva York y la carretera conectaba ese condado con el resto de los Estados Unidos. El Gran Boulevard y el Concourse, su nombre original, luego fue alineado con cines, centros comerciales y más notable, edificios de arte deco. Este paseo comenzará en la esquina suroeste del Grand Concourse y el este de la Calle 167 y terminará en el este de la Calle 149.

Pioneras: Grandes Jardines Americanos y las Mujeres que los Diseñaron
Pioneras, la amplia exhibición de jardines celebra a las mujeres de America más influyentes en el paisaje arquitectónico y diseño del siglo 20 como también fotografía de jardines y escritura. Experimente una evocación de un jardín americano inspirado por el Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Garden en Maine, y a través de los muchos componentes de exposición ofrecidos que reconocen la poesía, la música y la fotografía, descubra el trabajo y las significativas contribuciones de estas mujeres a la historia americana y a la cultura. Caminatas en el Cementerio Woodlawn
Es el lugar de descanso de muchos individuos famosos; incluyendo al novelista americano Herman Melville. Amigos del Cementerio Woodlawn presenta: caminatas del cementerio los sábados contando con importantes monumentos y lugares de descanso de importantes individuos. Los domingos, el cementerio presenta excursiones especiales que van más allá del trillado camino de tumbas de individuos interesantes. La excursión dura aproximadamente 2 horas y envuelve 1.5 millas de caminata.

Solo Rites: Seven Breaths
El Concejo de Artes del Bronx y Raymour & Flanigan presentan a la vocalista, compositora y multi-instrumentalista internacionalmente aclamada, el sábado, 3 de mayo a las 2:00 p.m. Jen Shyu es una experimentada vocalista de jazz, compositora, multi-instrumentalista, bailarina, estudiosa, y educadora que se ha presentado como solista, líder de banda y colaboradora en los E.U. y en el extranjero. Sus créditos y premios en su carrera son muchos. Ha ganado tres veces el premio de BCA’s BRIO (Bronx Reconoce a los Suyos) y recientemente recibió la Beca Fulbright 2012-13 con la cual viajó a Indonesia para estudiar Sindhenan, canto improvisado tradicional ‘javanese’. La interpretación presenta extractos de la opera de Jen Shyu’s Solo Rite: Seven Breaths. La obra presenta ritos sonicos, visuales y viscerales de Jen Shyu, y reflexiones de su peregrinaje a través de Taiwan, East Timor, Indonesia, Vietnam y el Sur de Corea. Utilizando múltiples herramientas de expresión en múltiples lenguajes, esta interpretación revela un viaje personales de pérdida y redención. La entrada es gratis.
