On Sat., Mar. 16th and on Sun., Mar. 17th, La Finca Del Sur/South Bronx Farmers will host their “Waking up the Farm!” event, where they’ll seek for volunteers to help clean up, start seeds, plant bulbs and learn about their community-based programs.
La FInca del Sur/South Bronx Farmers is an urban farmer cooperative led by Latina and Black women and their allies. Their mission is to build healthier neighborhoods through economic empowerment, increased nutritional awareness, training and education and advocacy. Founded in the late winter of 2009, La Finca del Sur was the brainchild of a number of individuals and organizations working in the South Bronx. These groups had a vision for a lot on 138th Street and Grand Concourse, which they transformed into a community-led farm.
In 2010, La FInca del Sur/South Bronx Farmers was incorporated as a 501c3 nonprofit organization, with the goals of addressing issues of food access, environmental justice, and community empowerment – and to tie these issues to broader systemic inequalities and global justice.
