Ray Vega Latin Jazz Quintet
Join trumpeter and South Bronx native Ray Vega as he brings his Latin Jazz ensemble to Wave Hill on Sun., Mar. 15th, offering a mix of his own works and his unique take on standard tunes. Described as “a dean of golden tones and elegant, melody-respecting improvisational development,” he has performed with legends such as Tito Puente, Mongo Santamaria, Lionel Hampton and Paquito D’Rivera. Show begins at 2:00 p.m. Registration is required, online or at the Perkins Visitor Center.

Expresiones del Flamenco
With its powerful music and striking movements, Expresiones del Flamenco, as presented by dance troupe Flamenco Vivo II, will offer an overview of the vibrant dance style and emotions known as flamenco. Guests will learn more about the swirl of the mantón (embroidered shawl) and bata de cola (dress with a long train), among other features.
The shows will be presented at the main theatre at Hostos Community College on Thurs., Mar. 26th at 10:00 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. Hostos Community College is located at 450 Grand Concourse.

Paris is Burning
In honor of its 25th Anniversary, the film Paris is Burning will be screened at the Bronx Museum on Thurs., March 19th, followed by a Q&A led by BronxWorks’ Sexual Health Promotion Through Youth Leadership youth as well as a Voguing Workshop led by Visual AIDS artist Kia LaBeija. Winner of a Sundance Grand Jury Prize, Paris is Burning celebrates how African-American, Latino, gay, and transgender New Yorkers, for whom racism, poverty, and homophobia were daily struggles, created a world of their own, one of sustenance and joy. The iconic film provides a dynamic and intimate portrait of the Harlem drag balls of the 1980’s, where rival fashion “houses” competed for trophies and cash. Guests will also be joined by a number of community partners, including HealthPlus Amerigroup and Planned Parenthood, who will offer information on sexual health and wellness.

Run for the Wild!
The Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) is asking locals to make tracks for gorillas during the Run for the Wild at the Bronx Zoo. Among human beings’ closest relatives in nature, gorillas face deep threats from deforestation and poaching. The 5K Fun and Family Fun Run is open to runners and walkers alike. For those who cannot participate, there is an option to support a runner. The run will take place on Sat., Apr. 25th from 7:30 – 11:00 a.m. with additional events planned afterwards.

Quinteto Jazz Latino Ray Vega
Únase al trompetista y nativo del Sur del Bronx Ray Vega mientras lleva su conjunto de Jazz Latino a Wave Hill el domingo, 15 de marzo, con una mezcla de sus propios trabajos y sus diferentes tonos. Descrito como “decano de los tonos dorados y elegantes, meloda respetando el desarrollo de la improvisación”, se ha presentado con leyendas tales como Tito Puente, Mongo Santamaria, Lionel Hampton y Paquito D’Rivera.

Paris se está quemando
En honor a su Aniversario 25, la película ‘Paris is Burning’ será presentada en el Museo del Bronx el jueves, 19 de marzo, seguido de preguntas y respuestas dirigido por la Promoción de Salud Sexual de BronxWorks a través del Liderazgo de Jóvenes como también ‘Voguing Workshop’ dirigido por la artista Kia LaBeija de Visual AIDS.
Ganadora del premio “Sundance Grand Jury”, ‘Paris is Burning’ celebra como los neoyorquinos afroamericanos, latinos, homosexuales y transexuales, para los cuales el racismo, la pobreza y la homofobia fueron luchas diarias, crearon un mundo de sustento y alegría. La icónica película provee un retrato dinámico e íntimo del Harlem del 1980, donde las casas de modas competían por trofeos y dinero. Será presentada en colaboración con Visual AIDS y BronxWorks. Carrera por lo Silvestre
La Sociedad de Conservación de Vida Silvestre le está pidiendo a los vecinos hacer pistas para los gorilas durante la Carrera por lo Silvestre en el Zoo del Bronx. Uno de nuestro parientes más cercanos en la naturaleza, los gorilas, enfrentan profundas amenazas de deforestación y caza furtiva. La Carrera ‘5K Fun and Family Fun’ está abierta para corredores y caminantes por igual.
Para aquellos que no pueden participar, hay una opción para apoyar a un corredor.
La carrera se celebrará el sábado, 25 de abril de 7:30 – 11:00 a.m. con más eventos planificados luego de esta.
