Bronx Borough President Rubén Díaz Jr.’s inauguration ceremony coincided with an auspicious moment: the county’s 100th year anniversary.
This past Thurs., Jan. 9th, the Borough President was joined at the Bronx County Courthouse by local elected officials, including Mayor Bill de Blasio, business and community leaders for his inauguration ceremony and the official kick off to BronxCounty’s year-round centennial celebration.
As much a celebration of the incumbent’s re-election, the occasion also served to highlight the borough’s past, present and future, which has evolved from a pastoral landscape, a thriving middle-class community, an epitome of urban neglect, and now, the embodiment of urban renewal – all within a century.
“He puts his heart and soul into his work every day,” said Mayor Bill de Blasio.The Bronx delegation of the City Council too was inducted on Thursday, in what was intended as a historical nod to the first swearing-in that took place when BronxCounty was created in 1914. Those attended were encouraged to use the hashtag #bronx100 to discuss the event on social media.
In homage to the Borough’s history, Pastor Overall, a descendent of the land-owning Morris family, offered words of welcome and blessing. But she did not cite the gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, or John. She sought inspiration instead from the words of Ogden Nash, the poet and humorist who penned in 1931 an infamous couplet dismissive of the borough.
“The Bronx?
No, thonx!”
He later issued an apology in verse in a 1964 letter to Abraham Tauber, then the dean of the faculty at the BronxCommunity College.
His plea:
“I wrote those lines, “The Bronx? No thonx”;
I shudder to confess them.
Now I’m an older, wiser man
I cry, “The Bronx? God bless them!”
But on Thursday, Pastor Overall sought to reclaim and redirect the original poem’s spirit.
“The Bronx? Yes, thonx!” she proclaimed, to much laughter.
Those gathered were effusive in words of appreciation for the Borough President.
“He puts his heart and soul into his work every day,” said the Mayor. “Good things are happening in the Bronx, and Rubén Díaz is here to repeat it,” jokingly referring to the phrase that the Borough President likes to use during press conferences.
City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito, who represents parts of the Bronx, promised that the Council would maintain a focus in rebuilding the Bronx.
“We want to have a role in looking at communities across this city and seeing who needs our commitment and needs our focus.”
The Borough President called the occasion a “double whammy” for him, as it was the borough’s birthday, and his second swearing-in as its president.
“Not only is it the ceremonial start of my second term as Borough President of this great borough I love, but we are also marking a major milestone as we celebrate the first 100 years of BronxCounty. It is our time to shine and let the world know that the Bronx is rich in history, culture and diversity and this is what we are going to showcase in our yearlong celebration.”
In his remarks, the Borough President highlighted economic development projects such as the KingsbridgeNationalIceCenter in the Kingsbridge Armory and a new Trump golf course, as well as a reduction in crime and the burgeoning arts scene in the South Bronx.
“Today is as much about where we have been as it is where we are going—and boy, are we going,” he said.
He was sworn in on the 150-year-old Bible of belonging to Charles Coleman Ferris, who, according to Professor Ultan, was part of one the first families to settle in the Bronx.
During the ceremony, the Bronx Chamber of Commerce also unveiled a commemorative plaque celebrating the centennial.
“The Bronx’s Centennial could not have come at a better time,” said Bronx Overall Economic Development Corporation President Marlene Cintron. “What has been accomplished in the area of economic development in just the last five years will insure that the next 100 years provide our residents and businesses with a community where residents can work in their borough, receive excellent education and health care, our businesses will thrive, while tourists and visitors can shop and visit our many diverse sports venues throughout.”
Many gathered shared their vision for the county in the next hundred years.
“I have no doubt that in a hundred years the South Bronx will be one of the most vibrant, artistic, cultural, education and business centers in the city,” said Félix Matos-Rodríguez, the President of Hostos Community College. “We’re building the foundations for that now.”
Historian and professor Ultan was initially hesitant to ponder the borough’s destiny a hundred years from now.
“I’m a historian. I look in the other direction,” he said, before offering a few thoughts.
“The trends that are around today are very positive. You have new housing, new modes of transportation, new businesses, and you have new people coming from all over. Therefore, if this trend continues, we can look forward to a Bronx full of very friendly people, getting along in health, happiness and prosperity.”
“We hope the folks that are here stay here and experience the positive changes,” added State Senator Gustavo Rivera. “And hopefully, we’ll have flying cars.”
Former Bronx Borough President Fernando Ferrer drew inspiration from cinema.
Ferrer referenced the 1990 film Awakenings, starring Robert De Niro. Set in 1967, the film is about a doctor, portrayed by Robin Williams, who woke patients from decades-long catatonic states. De Niro played one of his patients. He recalled a specific scene in which De Niro, as the patient, is walking along Fordham Road, and he is enthralled by the borough after years of catatonia.
“He looks around and says, ‘Look at what a nice place the Bronx has become’. It was true in that movie, and it’s true today.”

La ceremonia de inauguración del presidente del condado del Bronx Rubén Díaz Jr., coincidió con un momento propicio: el 100º aniversario del condado.
El pasado jueves 9 de enero, el Presidente del condado estuvo acompañado en la corte del condado del Bronx por funcionarios electos locales, entre ellos el alcalde Bill de Blasio y líderes empresariales y comunitarios para la ceremonia de su toma de posesióny el lanzamiento oficial de la celebración del centenario del Bronx durante todo el año.
La ocasión también sirvió para destacar el pasado del condado, su presente y futuro, que se ha transformado de ser un paisaje pastoral, una comunidad de clase media próspera, un epítome de abandono urbano, ahora, a la materialización de la renovación urbana -todo en un siglo.
La delegación del Bronx del Consejo de la ciudad también fue instalada el jueves, en lo que pretendía ser un reconocimiento histórico a la primera toma de posesión que tuvo lugar cuando el condado del Bronx fue creado en 1914. Aquellos que asistieron fueron alentados a utilizar el hashtag # bronx100 para discutir el caso en las redes sociales.

Pero el jueves, Pastor Overall trató de recuperar y reorientar el espíritu del poema original.
“¿El Bronx? ¡Sí, thonx!” proclamó, riendo.
Los reunidos fueron efusivos en las palabras de agradecimiento para el Presidente del condado.
“Él pone su corazón y alma en su trabajo todos los días”, dijo el Alcalde. “Las cosas buenas están sucediendo en el Bronx, y Rubén Díaz está aquí para repetirlo”, bromeando en referencia a la frase que al presidente del condado le gusta usar durante las conferencias de prensa.
La portavoz del concejo de la ciudad, Melissa Mark-Viverito, quien representa vecindarios del Bronx, prometió que el Consejo mantendrá un enfoque en la reconstrucción del Bronx.
“Queremos tener un papel al examinar las comunidades a través de esta ciudad y ver quién necesita nuestro compromiso y nuestra atención”.
El Presidente del condado llamó la ocasión un “doble revés” para él, ya que era el cumpleaños del condado, y su segunda toma de posesión como presidente.
“No sólo es la ceremonia de mi segundo mandato como presidente de este gran condado que amo, sino también estamos marcando un hito importante al celebrar los primeros 100 años del condado del Bronx. Es nuestro momento de brillar y dejar que el mundo sepa que el Bronx es rico en historia, cultura y diversidad, y esto es lo que vamos a mostrar en nuestra celebración anual”.
En su discurso, el Presidente del condado destacó proyectos de desarrollo económico, como el Centro Nacional de Hielo de Kingsbridge en la Armería Kingsbridge y un nuevo campo de golf Trump, así como una reducción en la delincuencia y la floreciente escena artística en el sur del Bronx.
“Hoy se trata tanto de dónde hemos estado y a donde vamos, y vaya, ¡allá vamos!”, dijo.
Fue juramentado con la Biblia de 150 años de edad, perteneciente a Charles Coleman Ferris, quien, según el profesor Ultan, fue parte de una de las primeras familias que se instaló en el Bronx.
Durante la ceremonia, la Cámara de Comercio del Bronx también develó una placa conmemorativa para celebrar el centenario.
“El centenario del Bronx no podría haber llegado en mejor momento”, dijo la presidenta de la Corporación de Desarrollo Económico General del Bronx, Marlene Cintron. “Lo que se ha logrado en el área de desarrollo económico en tan sólo los últimos cinco años, garantizará que los próximos 100 años se proporcione a nuestros residentes y empresas una comunidad donde los residentes puedan trabajar en su vecindario, recibir atención de salud y una excelente educación, nuestros negocios prosperarán, mientras que los turistas y visitantes podrán hacer compras y visitar nuestras muy diversas instalaciones deportivas”.
Muchos de los reunidos compartieron su visión para el condado en los próximos cien años.
“No tengo ninguna duda de que dentro de cien años, el sur del Bronx será uno de los centros de negocios y educativos más vibrantes, artísticos y culturales de la ciudad”, dijo Félix Matos- Rodríguez, presidente del Colgio Comunal Hostos. “Estamos construyendo las bases para eso ahora”.
El historiador y profesor Ultan fue inicialmente reticente a reflexionar sobre el destino del condado a cien años a partir de ahora.
“Soy un historiador. Miro en la otra dirección”, dijo, antes de ofrecer algunas reflexiones.
“Las tendencias que están alrededor hoy en día son muy positivas. Tienen nuevas viviendas, nuevas formas de transporte, nuevos negocios y mucha gente nueva que viene de todas partes. Por lo tanto, si esta tendencia continúa, podemos esperar un Bronx lleno de gente muy amigable, llevándose bien en la salud, la felicidad y la prosperidad”.
“Esperamos que las personas que están aquí se queden aquí y experimenten los cambios positivos”, agregó el senador estatal Gustavo Rivera. “Y con suerte, tendremos coches voladores”.
El ex presidente del condado del Bronx Fernando Ferrer se inspiró en el cine.
Ferrer hizo referencia a la película de 1990 Awakenings, protagonizada por Robert De Niro. Ambientada en 1967, la película trata acerca de un doctor, interpretado por Robin Williams, quien despierta a los pacientes después de largas décadas de estados catatónicos. De Niro interpretó a uno de sus pacientes. Recordó una escena específica en la que De Niro, siendo paciente, está caminando a lo largo de Fordham Road, y es cautivado por el condado después de años de catatonia.
“Mira a su alrededor y dice: ‘En qué lugar tan agradable se ha convertido el Bronx’. Era verdad en esa película, y es cierto hoy”.
