Summer of STEM
Applications for NYC SUMMER STEM 2015, a new citywide program to provide students who just completed grades 2, 7, and 10 with free, full-day, high-quality STEM instruction, are now being accepted.
SUMMER STEM will serve 1,200 students – 400 from each grade.
SUMMER STEM is open to all students in 2nd, 7th, and 10th grades who have had at least 90% attendance during this school year and are not required to attend summer school. Applications and the list of SUMMER STEM sites are available online at http://on.nyc.gov/1QxGIt9. Parents can also get more information and support, including paper applications and applications in languages other than English, by contacting their school’s parent coordinator. Applicants may rank up to two sites on their applications, and will be selected for the program by lottery.
All applications must be received by June 15.
The sessions will run Mondays through Thursdays – from July 6 to July 30 for 2nd graders, and from July 6 to August 6 for 7th and 10th graders.
Breakfast and lunch will be served at the program sites.
For the 2nd grade SUMMER STEM program, the DOE will use the “Engineering is Elementary” curriculum that integrates engineering and technology concepts and skills with science topics. In the 7th and 10th grade programs, students will learn robotics and “Science of Smart Cities,” a program that focuses on the engineering, technology, and science of urban development and sustainability. All SUMMER STEM curricula will involve hands-on learning. In addition, students will have arts and physical education enrichment opportunities.
SUMMER STEM 2015 was developed in coordination with Microsoft, NYU Polytechnic, the Boston Museum of Science, and the New York Hall of Science.

Solicitudes para ‘NYC SUMMER STEM 2015’, un nuevo programa para proveerle a los estudiantes que acaban de completar los grados 2, 7 y 10 con instrucción STEM de alta calidad, gratis y todo el día, ahora están siendo aceptadas.
‘SUMMER STEM’ servirá a 1,200 estudiantes – 400 de cada grado.
‘SUMMER STEM’ está abierto para todos los estudiantes en los grados 2, 7 y 10 que han tenido por lo menos un 90% en asistencia durante este año escolar y no se les requiere asistir a escuela de verano. Las solicitudes y la lista de los lugares de ‘SUMMER STEM’ están disponibles en línea en http://on.nyc.gov/1QxGIt9. Los padres también pueden encontrar más información y apoyo, incluyendo solicitudes en papel y solicitudes en otros idiomas además del inglés, comunicándose con el padre coordinador de su escuela. Los solicitantes pueden pedir hasta dos lugares en sus solicitudes, y serán seleccionados para el programa por lotería.
Todas las solicitudes deben de ser recibidas hasta el 15 de junio.
Las sesiones serán de lunes a jueves – desde el 6 de julio hasta el 30 de julio para los de 2do grado, y del 6 de julio hasta el 6 de agosto para los grados 7 y 10.

Para el programa ‘SUMMER STEM’ de 2do grado, el DOE utilizará el curriculum de la “Ingeniería es Elemental” que integra conceptos de ingeniería y tecnología, y destrezas con temas científicos. En los programas de 7 y 10, los estudiantes aprenderán robótica y “Ciencia de las Ciudades Inteligentes”, un programa que se enfoca en la ingeniería, tecnología y ciencia del desarrollo urbano y sostenibilidad. Todo el currículo de ‘SUMMER STEM’ envolverá aprendizaje práctico. Además, los estudiantes tendrán oportunidades de enriquecimiento en las artes y educación física.
‘SUMMER STEM’ 2015 fue desarrollado en coordinación con Microsoft, NYU Polytechnic, el Museo de las Ciencias de Boston y el Paseo de las Ciencias de Nueva York.
