Named for the famed Italian conductor who spent his final years in the Bronx, the Arturo Toscanini Community Junior High School 145 might also soon see its last days. The school on Teller Avenue is in danger of closing. The Department of Education (DOE) announced it would close five schools in January, pending a March 6th hearing. This past Thurs., Feb. 16th, about 250 students surged out of M.S. 145, carrying signs and chanting, “Save our school!” “The community is very upset. This school has been here for 50 years,” said teacher Jim Donohue. “It’s been an anchor and a safe place for a very vulnerable population of kids.” Louis Fernández said that he and his sister have both attended the school. The eighth grader has many fond memories and closing the school would be extremely troubling. “If they close the school, I won’t be able to come back here next year.” The DOE said the school hasn’t shown enough improvement. However, parents and teachers say the school’s performance is comparable to that of local middle schools. M.S. 145 is a Renewal school and as such, the DOE is supposed to provide an extra helping hand and specific assistance to ensure its success. Yet both parents and teachers alike say that the DOE has slowly starved the school of the resources it needs. All of Annagine Lewis’ four children have attended the school. “I believe that the Department of Education has failed us greatly,” she said. “How can you give us the students to teach if you are not giving us the tools to teach them?” asked Lewis. She added that even though the school’s resources are severely strapped, it does not have the lowest test schools or even the lowest attendance rate. “What is [this closure] based on?” There is concern that the school is being closed to make more room for a charter school. Success Academy Bronx 3 Upper is co-located with the school. Success Academy, the largest charter school operator in the state, runs 41 schools in the five boroughs and plans to open several more during the next 10 years. “It’s easy to speculate that they are going to push us out to make space for the charter school. If that’s the case—that’s unfair,” said Lewis. As Success Academy plans expansion, Mayor Bill de Blasio may have no choice but to acquiesce. New York State mandates that charter schools must receive space in existing public school locations or have municipalities pay for their leases in a private location. Closing the school will destabilize the community, said teacher Craig Moss. Many of the current students won’t be able to go the already full local schools and will have to find other options outside of the neighborhood. About 25 percent of the students come from nearby homeless shelters. The dislocation would add further instability. Moss added that labeling the school a failure, it also sends a message to the students that, on some level, they are failures as well. On March 6, a joint public hearing will be held at the school. March 22nd will be the actual vote. Teachers said that Community Board 4 has passed a resolution in support of the school. They have also reached out to elected officials for support. “We are hoping that there will be other options available other than closing the school,” said Donohue. “As doctors often say, the last thing you want to do is surgery. I would think the last thing you want to do is euthanasia.” Meanwhile, students pledged to continue to rally. Eighth grader Rosalyn said, “They want to close our school down because they think we are numbers. We are not numbers. We are students.” For more information, please visit ms145.org.

El pasado jueves, 16 de febrero, unos 250 estudiantes salieron de la escuela 145, con pancartas y gritando “¡Salven nuestra escuela!”. “La comunidad está muy molesta. Esta escuela ha estado aquí por 50 años”, dijo el profesor Jim Donohue. “Ha sido un ancla y un lugar seguro para una población de niños muy vulnerable”. El estudiante de octavo grado, Luis Fernández, dijo que él y su hermana han asistido a la escuela, que tiene muchos recuerdos y que cerrarla sería extremadamente problemático. “Si cierran la escuela, no podré volver aquí el próximo año”.
